Database...

Hey Mr. Dave, how hard would it be to get "grasses" added to the database? I promise I will work on it if you would include it...

Weebus

Grasses as a category? On the surface of it, I would think that grasses should go under Perennial or Annual, depending on the type of grass.

And then, in the common name, or General Description, a note should be made that this is a member of the grass family.

Thoughts?

Weebus, that is a great point. I thought of that the other day when I saw some plants that rightfully should be categorized as groundcovers. What would you think of a category called "Grasses and Groundcovers"?

I've already given Dave several "wish list" items for the database, so if you want to go ahead and add them to one of the existing categories, you can always go back in and move them later, or I'll try to make a note of what you add, and have them moved as soon as a category is created.

And let me expand on your original request/question for everyone to consider: are there other categories that anyone has realized we really should have?

There's always the dilemma of getting too specific (and too many categories) vs. having plants that really don't fit any of the existing categories. So add your requests here, and I'll try to help keep track of them all so I can give Dave a single list of proposed changes and additions.

Sounds good, vols. I'll go along with what you experts give me. :)

What about a houseplants entry? In the database as well as the search. I know, speaking for myself, I haven't hardly a clue what category most of my plants go under. Being that I am not an outside gardener I don't really know the difference between perrenials, annuals, and a lot of the other entries there are. I know they are houseplants and thats about all I know. I know for a lot of people out there my houseplants could be in their garden. But I am trying to make it easier for people like me who only work with houseplants. Well if this isn't a possibility, maybe I'll just add houseplant to my entry and if they do a search on houseplants, will that come up?
Thanks for allowing me to babble away

Holly, that's something I've pondered, too. I see a lot of houseplants in the Tropicals forum, which is a good place for many of them; as you say, some of our houseplants can be grown outdoors in other parts of the world. Some of them are really annuals, perennials, roses, succulents, as well as tropicals. Hmmmmm.

Perhaps a check box in the description - "suitable for growing indoors", similar to how we've done for invasive plants and toxic plants. That way, you could search for all plants that have been noted, and it wouldn't matter if they were a rose, a cactus, or a flowering tropical.

Indoor gardeners, let's hear from you, does that make sense, or is there a better solution?

Vols: I love the idea of a checkbox for "suitable for growing indoors". That's the way we should go - definitely.

MM: The checkbox isn't there yet... Vols has already sent me a pretty big list of needed changes to the DB structure and I'll be getting to that soon.

As I do those changes I already have planned, I'll be adding whatever necessary changes come up via this thread. The checkbox for houseplants will be included.

Once the checkbox is added, you'll need to go back and edit any of your existing entries, if you want to make the checkbox active for the same.

Thank You very much!!!!!!!!!!! That's easy enough and I don't think it will get everyone confused either. And now that we have the entries that we have made on our home page it will be easy enough to edit them.
I appreciate the fact that you all ask questions and include others and then come up with a solution that can suite everyone :) Have I said lately that I love this place :)

I'm not sure if this subject has been mentioned or considered as to "preventing plant diseases"

I am careful with my garden equipment'Clean them after each use'' I'm sure we all have some easy, perhaps quick tips to share in this very important aspect of gardening''

Very important to have a healthy garden whether it is inside or outside'

Weebus has a great idea too Dave and I think of perhaps having "GRASSES LISTED BY ZONES" Would this make it easier for everyone??? Something to ponder''' Thank you'Sis'

Everyone,
How about Ornamental Grasses?

I mentioned to Vols maybe it could be Grasses/Bamboo.
