DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 9

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

There are a few plants that go by the same common name, "False Indigo". That is why I tell people, I'm not trying to be a smarty pants with the latin names, I only want the RIGHT host plant, haha! Too many times I have bought a plant by the common name, and lo and behold, it was the wrong one.

:-)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

They have it at NNNursery.. cool!

jim thinks you are a great person. I have been there a few more times since you showed me they were still open, just in a new place.

I have something growing in the back corner of the yard, kinda in the woods a little, so I left it there. I will take a picture tomorrow, if I remember right it looks like the false indigo.

12 years,
Wow, no wonder you know sooooo much. :)

Maybe I will ride over to NNnursery tomorrow. I love walking around that place!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Deb, is that your Amorpha fruticosa in bloom? That is great, mine are not blooming yet.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, I forgot to tell you, yesterday we found a great big(io Moth ) cat on the amorpha, so that might be another one to look for.

Chris - Loved your photos of the Calla and it's visitors! Too cute, really!!!

Deb - Your Silver Spotted Skipper cat photo is sooooo cute! I'm going to have to start looking to see if I have any visiting my yard. I started some False Indigo from seed and they are starting to grow. Of course, I don't know what cultivar of the Indigo it is. Hopefully, it's the correct host plant. :-)

I am finally starting see some more butterflies in my yard. Still no GF or Zebra Longwings to help prune back all my Maypop vines. :-( But I did see a Zebra Swallowtail come through my yard today. I stood there in awe holding my breath hoping to see it land on something ..... but alas ...... it was just passing through. :-( Gosh! Are they ever gorgeous butterflies!!! I want them in my yard! I have a Pawpaw sapling, but don't think it's going to make it in my yard. They grow soooo slow and are such fragile plants. Too bad there isn't another hardier plant that they use as a host.

Edinburg, TX

Whoa...when I tried to post a few minutes ago my post came out blank?!

Anyway...was doing the ("") ("") dance. (that's emoticon for Paw Paw) ROLF!!!

Yep, I purchased a couple of Paw Paw saplings from an internet company and they are doing quite well. Thought perhaps our south Texas heat would scorch 'em but they've got new leaves and the recent rains have done wonders for them. Will have to move them to bigger pots soon.

Not sure if I'll ever attract a Zebra this far south but I can always tempt 'em.

Cat - Where did you get your Pawpaws?

Edinburg, TX

Becky,

I got Spicebush, Paw Paw and Sassafras from far_out_farm on ebay. I bought 5 spicebush, 5 paw paw and 10 sassafras so was able to make a good deal with them. About 4 of the 20 died...but that was my fault for not watering them.

Cat - that was quite a haul you got! Losing 4 of 20 is a pretty small loss for plants bought on line. Sure hope you get good response from the b'flies - those are great choices of plants for them.

Let us know how it goes.

I got my Pawpaw from a local nursery. I wonder if there are different cultivars of Pawpaw? I had bought 2 and one died over the winter (even being sheltered). This one has gotten about 10 leaves, but doesn't look so good. It is maybe 6" tall and very, very slow to grow. I have read they don't like to be transplanted. Mine is currently in a pot.

I have not had any luck with e-bay at all. I have ordered plants from about 6 different sellers and all have died except one plant Rugosa Rose which is doing marvelous! The only other plants I have purchased mail-order that seem to do survive and do well are water lilies and lotus and some other water plants. But anything that goes into the ground just croaks! Literally. I know it is the heat here. Little rain and always on the brink of a drought. I bet that is why Texas is getting sooooo many butterflies right now ..... lots and lots of rain made all the plants really healthy! :-)

I have a lot of catching up to do.. I was outside trying to help another wayward baby bird.. It was a sparrow, and it was following Jackie around outside. All my efforts weren't enough.. and as I transplanted one of my Amorphas, I placed the baby in the hole about 6" deeper than the bottom. Then it poured down rain.
Josephine the pic is Jim and Debi's from NNNursery in GA. .. (Maybe I should put that in the post, but it is the same pic as in their link.) Mine still haven't bloomed either. When it does I will tell you first, :-)! Cool you found an Io, those are so beautiful! So far I haven't seen them in my yard.

Cat~ Looks like you found some good deals on Pawpaw and everything. I have one too...now y'all know I'm stretchin my luck (nuts), thinking I could get a ZST here. I'm glad I have a Pp now though, for the offchance a few might fly through on their way to Michigan from the Big Thicket.
From what I know about Pawpaw is they have a very long tap root, if it is broken or damaged in any way, the tree will not survive. It came in a 4"x4"X12" pot and I dug a hole about 4' deep.
All I did was inquire of prices and shipping to wildfowers website, and Mike just sent me everything I asked about with a bill. The prices were pretty good anyway, so I sent a check. It was funny not getting a reply, but he seems to trust his customers a lot just to ship all that merchandise without getting a payment first.

Chris~ Its been a lot of fun working in the garden, spiritual even.. I see something, and I have to learn everything I can about it. There will always be that much more that I don't know. That's why I'm lucky to be here at DG. We are never at a lack for resources.

I only get 3 kinds of BF's here. Plenty of monarch's living here.

We are getting more and more swallowtails visiting now. (-:

I counted 6 eastern tiger swallowtails, one zebra St and two spice bush STs nectaring at the same time today. Along with little bfs, skippers and moths.

The buddleia is attractive, but the most popular nectar plant remains the verbena bonarienses.

And here's our little zebra ST. She chose our one zinnia that lost it's petals...

And our silver spotted skipper, Epargyreus clarus, quite common in these parts, but very cute.

Very nice Tab.

I've got all the admirals here I think. They are funny because every time I go out to take pics they always fly in front of me and land.

This Tiger Swallowtail was so happy on my Buckeye blossoms that I was able to walk right up to it for photos. It barely noticed me. I got several good photos and it was still happily fluttering from flower to flower when I left.

Perfect picture, Chris_h! Pretty enough to frame!
Can hardly wait for my tiny Buckeye to grow big enough to bloom and draw butterlies to it.
