I can't determine what the plant is in the banner. Can anyone tell me?
What is the plant in the banner?
Looks like freesia http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/8001/ to me.
Who submitted the banner? They could tell us for sure.
Unless we're looking at different banners, it's Crocosmia.
It is indeed Crocosmia.

Thanks Liz. I thought that's what it could be, but since it's not a plant that I've seen in person, I wasn't totally sure.
Thanks Kin! That cinches it then! :) Now I can sleep tonight without trying to figure out for sure what it is.
GardenGuyKin, Thank you. It's a beautiful photo. JoanJ I think you have your answer now for sure.
The varieties I have growing at my house look more splayed out like these http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/158661/

It is indeed a beautiful plant. Now if I could only figure out a way to move to a place that's a few zones warmer. :)
Well since a hummingbird weighs .09-.14 oz. or 2.5-4 gm, I don't think it can even register as something that would weigh the branch down even the slightest.
Well, that cinches it for me, too! I'd thought that looked suspiciously like an Anna's hummingbird but didn't know if that was possible or if it was a created photo.
I got to watch the banner in real life the other day in my garden. The little Anna's visited all the open flowers and then took a nice rest on the branch just like the logo. Of course, no camera anywhere about at the time....
This is the second time we've runt this banner, I believe.
It is by far and away the most commented-upon banner we've had. In fact, I have a standard reply I use when the inquiries roll in. To-date, over 20 such inquiries have been logged ;o)
Terry,
Yes, this is the second year for this banner. Last year you sent me a kind Dmail expressing the interest it generated.
I was sure a happy fellow hearing about this! Happy to hear people have enjoyed the banner and the little hummer.
Here is another photo showing a hummer enjoying himself among the blossoms.

Sue, you are so correct.. They don't weigh much at all and the spikes don't have any problem supporting such little weight. Different varieties of crocosmia do have more fragile spikes or are close to the ground. Hummers don't like being too close to the ground.
Another strong and tall crocosmia is Emberglow

They are just now beginning to shoot up there spikes for me in my garden.
I thank you all kindly for your comments and compliments
I have to say, it's the most beautiful gardening photo I have ever seen. I just love seeing that picture at the top of every page at DG.
dave
Hmmm...it *is* beautiful, without a doubt. But I'm not sure I could choose a favorite - we've had some really excellent banners ;o)
The crocosmia do very well here and I have seen hummers, gold finch and sparrows perch on them with the stem just bowing gently under their weight. I agree that this picture makes a beautiful banner. Both because of the picture itself and because our banner guru did such a wonderful job fading the greens in the background so it is impossible to tell where the picture ends and the color fade begins.
You know...I just now noticed that the bug files has a different banner...is that cause it's a bug?????
Is is a very beautiful banner too.
Some of the forums have different banners too. Like the California forum has some CA poppies.
JoanJ,
Have you heard of Flasher, N.D.?
carol
Yeah, I know where Flasher is. Do you have relatives there? Or is that where you are from?
