I just became a member of Dave's Garden. Wanted to just say Hi. I can not believe what a wonderful site it is. I have spent hours looking at all your beautiful lilies.
New to Dave's Garden - My Lilies
nice color there...
Thanks it was new this year to my garden. It is called Landini.
Welcome to Dave's, Dlefferts!
I could almost not believe how dark Landini is, until the first time I actually say a live one, at our local lily society's flower show last week. Scrumptious!
Hello, and welcome! Doesn't Landini have the juiciest color!?
And you have it paired with a white one. Nice. :) I can't wait for my Landini to bloom..:)
I like my 'Landini' and 'Ebony' with a nice pink. 'Strawberry Cream' is a neighbor to it and is very complimentary, as is a pink hybrid tea rose. I love the depth of their color, those black lilies.
Oooh, excellent idea Mags! See, I'm just not any good at visualizing how they should be put together. I just pop them into the ground and who they come up by is who they come up by.
Oh, I am the queen of "pop them in the ground and be done." Most of any success is an accident, trust me on this ;) and there are always those that will say "that looks ugly", when to me it is beautiful. It's just your taste I guess. I smile no matter what, cause I still love it.
all this planning is what's really holding me up on the landscaping. The house is beige with white trim. So, I've been looking for basically white, yellow and orange flowers for the most part. With the exception of something I really want but doesn't come in those colors..
I would think with Beige you could do pretty much any color you wanted... (unless you only want those colors).
not sure red, purple, and blue colors would go with beige.. never really dress that way come to think of it either..
Ok. :) I like a riot of colors. Most anything goes in my gardens. But then, I'm not trying to achieve a certain color palette. Regardless of what colors I like in a garden, your Landini is beautiful and I like it with your white lily! :) Please do post more pictures.

I definitely agree that Dlefferts's blood red Landini is gorgeous. That one, I'd find a place for it even if it doesn't match my home..
you guys aren't kidding... it looks like rainbow exploded over your garden.. awesome.
Moby... You're right.. I'm sold... That looks awesome.
hee hee What else can we sell ya?
lollll... I'm already sold on DL. Although, I am curious... I have deer problems here.. Do deers like daylilies? The already chomped my colombines down to the roots, my hostas were more resilient and were able to bounce back with three leaves after loosing all, and my sedum, now to a nub.. Is that going to be a problem?
Oh boy, you need to get yourself some Plantskydd. (yes, it's spelled correctly) It's available at some nurseries or online. There is a dealer locator at the bottom of the page. http://plantskydd.com/
I think Ticker uses Deer Fortress..?
MY preference in deer defense is Milorganite. And it is a fertilizer also!
Icosden, I'm with Moby go for color. When you look at your garden you want to smile. I don't plan my garden I just go with what I like. It was pure luck that I planted a white lily, next to Landini. My garden looks alot like Moby's.
lol A glorious mess?
Moby, your glorious mess is wonderful!! Lcosden, heh, never give Moby a challenge, she'll get ya every time. :) LOL
Yes, I use Deer Fortress, only because if the plants have to depend on me spraying them with stuff, they are probably going to be toast. The deer will come in to my back yard in late July and August after fallen apples, but they don't mess with anything else. And they are super skittish about walking in.
Milorganite intrigues me. It wouldn't hurt to broadcast that down in the hosta beds, or any other of my beds. I'm terrible about continuing to fertilize after the initial planting with a small handful of Osmocote....

Now that I know I have to protect my DL from deers, I checked up deer repellants... I found this recipe...
Homemade Deer Repellent Recipe 2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce mixed with 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap, 1 teaspoon garlic powder or liquid garlic juice, and 1 gallon of water. Spray weekly and/or after it rains--and hope your deer aren’t into spicy foods! [People have told me that raw eggs mixed in a blender with equal parts skim milk and water, plus a few tablespoons of liquid dish soap, also works. Let it sit for a few days and get really funky before you pour it onto your plants for the best results.]
I'm gonna try this.. I noticed that Milorganite is advertised as a regular fertilizer but other researches side that it's best used with other deer measures.. So maybe this recipe with the Milorganite will work??
Guess I'll see when my DL arrive...
lcosden, the only problem with home made deer repellents is that you'll need to re-apply every time it rains. With Plantskydd I think one application is good for three months and it will deter deer in the winter months form eating your shrubs (or so it says). With Deer Fortress, you just put out the funky little containers and it's good for all season, rain or shine. I don't know what the time period Milorganit is effective, but I'm going to get some and put it in my hosta beds for the double duty it does as a fertilizer.

OMGosh! Moby, that is breathe taking. Just my style. Don't do anything with the volunteers....makes it even more wonderful.
I broadcast Milorganite once a month. This schedule works for me.
Ico ~ the problem with garlic / pepper deterrents is that the animals have to first take a bite out of your plants. However, you could make up a nasty brew with those ingredients plus the rotten egg, add some blood meal... maybe a little fox or coyote urine... Much easier to get the Plantskydd but if you want to try your own brew, go easy on the hot peppers. I made some with my own super hot peppers and actually burned the plants.
Like that Lou? It's just sweetpeas and Star of Yelta morning glories.
We've had sooo much rain since May that most of my bloomers have just given up. Your's are so pretty.
If it were possible, I'd gladly take some rain off your hands for ya.
Hummm.. Guess I should the premade stuff instead of the homemade things... Can't be running out to re-apply after every rain storm..

we've actually been lucky.. we've been getting a good rain about every 2-3 days.. now if my DL came, I'd be all set.

Don't think reds, maroons or brown flowers will go with a beige house, at least in my opinion.
I hated my house color when I bought it - rusty orange. But now, I have dark brown steel siding. In fact I had to pay extra fro that color, and I chose it to accentuate my landscape. (Plus, brown is my favorite color.) I don't have flower gardens right next to my house (mostly). It's trees and shrubs. The yellow blooms of my wichhazel against the dark brown in October and November really dazzles me, as does the yellow flowers of my Cornelian Cherry in the very early spring. And I am telling ya, no color better complements the fall colors of the landscape.
Not a particularly floriferous year, but nice nonetheless:
Leftwood - yes your color concept is beautiful. But, when you love lilies - color is so important. When I look at all the different colors in my garden I smile. I will say however my flower garden is away from the house. I have boring bushes in the front which I accent every year with colorful impatients (worlds worst speller.
I get you there dlefferts, I have foundation bushes next to the house too. I am setting up a side bed by the front corner of the yard to my daylilies. That's why I'm more concerned about match the house. If it was in the back.. That's a different story..
