I wait every year to crique the fashion design of those swim suits. ;^)
(Real truth: first time I got that issue, I was very disappointed that there were no sport stories in it! "It's just women in bathing suits!?")
Gardening Magazines
Too funny, can the suits they wear actually be classified as a bathing suit? I thought they were more band-aids and dental floss.
So true about the mail if I don't get anything you know there was some kind of mix-up
Dave - that reminds me of the women who used to rip the photos out of Playboy since the husbands used to insist they read it only for the articles.
i am 36 last sunday... delighted to be in the younger demographic somewhere, as i am a "non-traditional" (and how!) undergraduate student and spend too much time surrounded by students who can't imagine high school without cell phones - the 80s are like the dark ages...
never gotten a gardening magazine - i planted things for the 1st time ever in april of 2006. i think they are meant for people who have a lot more space than me, so i read stuff online and get lots of great info from all y'all here! who needs more paper to recycle?
: )

Happy Birthday Amy! Good points. What are you studying? Hopefully not Geriatrics, 'cause at this rate...
You're in Michaela's league with the late schooling thing! Good for you. Good luck!
ha.
liberal studies. as general and broad as possible - i look at course catalogs and think, "ooh, THAT looks interesting..!" there is just so much out there to learn about.
i actually work in theatre - stage management and lighting - but jobs were not coming my way after moving to CT. we moved because my partner got a job offer to teach theatre, and so i can take classes for next to nothing, which provided a suficient incentive. i still do some free-lance work - i wish it was more.
this month i am taking Spanish II for four days a week, which i love, but i wish i had more opportunities to practice!
Si alguien aquí habla español, quiero practicar más frecuentemente.

That's great Amy. I love taking classes. Wish I had time now to do it. You can talk to my wife - she is bilingual from childhood.
Happy belated birthday Amy!! Now you are 36 and 1 week!
Dave
LOL Some of those "swimsuits" aren't even that. They are painted on. Works of art, maybe, but bathing suits? nope. There are those girls who are only wearing one piece of a two piece suit. and the prices for the bandaids and dental floss? you don't want to know!
Martha
Martha, Sounds like you speak from experience!
Dave, they publish the prices! as well as the names of the models. I have never read the articles in the swimsuit issue. But the outraged letter writer's issue about 1 month down the line is pretty interesting, also.
Martha
The women are only following the Reduce part of the three R's. I call it public service.
I never thought of the environmental benefits!
Martha, there are no articles in that issue. That is why I was disappointed. I think I was a minority of 1 among heterosexual males.
And you sent it back in disgust, Dave?
I searched for an article. For a long time.
Then you sent it back in disgust?
Maybe the article was under the floss??
I'm going to have to not respond at this point.
I had to look back through the thread to see if I had posted anything before - my memory is shot! I'm glad you started this thread Victor. I had just been buying gardening magazines from Lowes or Home Depot once in a while. Duh - it didn't occur to me to subscribe and I do enjoy reading them. I have now subscribed to Fine Gardening, Garden Gate, and Gardening How-To. Thanks for all of the good suggestions everyone. Eleanor
ps - I don't remember subscribing to Garden How-to but I got a card saying I had given myself a 6 Issue gift subscription!!! LOL at my deteriorating brain cells. I probably subscribed on-line while Colin was in his crib crying to get up and did it in a hurry and it didn't have time to register on my brain or that I had filled out the gift subscription form!! Eleanor again (I think!)
I subscribe to People, Places, and Plants which I like because of its New England focus. They have one issue annually that has info on the area's flower and garden shows (though that's not all that's in the issue) and one that has lots of info about garden tours in New England. I can be comfortable that most of the plants they talk about are hardy to me, though because I'm farther north, not all are. They often have info on garden places to visit - interesting nurseries, botanical gardens and other public gardens, and even commercial installations that can be visited by the public. There is a strong organic focus to the magazine, but I find the content more garden and plant related than the current Organic Gardening, which has too much fluff for me (recipes, etc.) The ads in PPP are pretty much from this part of the country as well, so I have found some new sources for plants and hardscape materials, and often get ideas to check out from the photos in some of the ads. You get a card that gets you a 10% discount at a whole bunch of nurseries as part of your subscription price, so if you do much plant shopping, it pays for itself.
I also get Fine Gardening, largely for the eye candy, but also for information on new plants and some on design. I have found most other gardening magazines don't give me much new information.
Your last comment I've found to be so true. By the time a photo of a new plant makes it to Fine Gardening or any magazine we've generally seen it right here at DG.
Joining the Royal Horticultural Society gets you The Garden which is a very good publication. All the ads are in the back so the text isn't marred. There's almost always one very good article and several others that might be just interesting. There's usually one good plant profile per copy which make Horticulture's plant profiles seem more like gossip columns.

Ooh - biting commentary there! I'll have to ask Horticulture who the Paris Hilton of plants is! Hee hee. If you don't mind my asking, how much is the Hort Society membership?
I get PPP too. Used to get Fine Gardening but have not renewed this time. I use my 10% discount card at all local nurseries, not just for plants but for supplies or tools too. I like the regional focus of the magazine.
I just looked on the RHS site and a membership is 44 pounds which is very expense given the current exchange rate. Perhaps if one were planning a trip to the UK and wanted to visit gardens at a discounted rate it'd be worth joining for the magazine. Otherwise, I'd say it's too much unless you can write it off. I don't know if you can buy the magazine seperately or not.
As for the Paris Hilton question, I think that that'd be an interesting thread all on it's own!
Okay - has anyone considered sharing expensive mags? I mean get three people, share the cost and share the mag - find an article you can't live without? photocopy it. :-)
