Wanted: Variegated tapioca plant (Manihot grahamii)

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

The local WalMart has variegated tapioca plants.

They're in 5 gallon pots, 2-3 feet tall. Each plant has 3-4 stalks.

They should fit in a long Priority tube, although they may need a bit of trimming in order to fit.

They're $9.97.

Moretz,

I'd be glad to. We can settle up after I ship it, so you'll know the exact amount. I'll send it Priority. If you have a PayPal account, you can pay me that way, or send a check - it's up to you.

These plants are a nice size; they're bigger than the one I have in my garden!

I'll let you know when I send it.

Steve

well if you have to cut it back that will be fine i can take the cuttings as well lol unless you want them? thxs so much and cant wait to get it

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Moretz,

I have one; I can buy another, if I want it. If I have to cut it back, I'll send the cuttings as well. I'm told that it's very easy to propagate.

Steve
np but if you wantt he cuttings you can keep them so you dont have to go buy you another one ok? i appreiciate you doing this for me i love this plant when i had it,it grew huge,i just love variegated plants they are pretty wether they bloom or not thxs again

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Moretz,

I bought your plant. I'd take a picture, but it's getting dark out, and there's a thunderstorm passing by - I'd get soaked.

I'm really curious as to why your plant has 3 stalks. The plant in my garden has one. My guess if that they put 3 plants in the pot; when I take it out of the pot to get it ready for shipping, I think I'm going to find 3 separate plants. That would actually be better - it would go into the box a lot easier.

I'll take a pic in the morning, post it here, and try to get it to the PO before noon, so that it goes out with the noon pickup.

Steve

Oh, and if you haven't seen the other post, MG is fine for the EEs; I use it all the time.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

steve ok great thxs so much
well the reason i asked you about the MG is because you said no fertilizer so that is why i was wondering thxsa gain

Where did you find yours at. I've looked at HD & Lowes but no luck. I'm going to check the regular nurseries this weekend.

Darn, they never have the good stuff at ours. I have three Walmarts in my area, plus a Lowe's, and none of them carry it. :-(

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Stacey,
I haven't read all of this thread, so not sure if you found your Manihot esculenta 'Variegata' or not. I just arrived home from Houston and stopped at Lowes in Lufkin. They have a nice large plant.
So, if there is a Lowes near you, you might check it out. I may be wrong, but I think it was $19.95 - I just glanced quickly.

I was never successful with getting any to root for me a couple of years ago when I grew them. However, I only tried rooting them in water. They grown as annuals in my zone.

I have since learned from Greg Grant Hortoculturist in East Texas, that Manihot carthaginensis roots easily with heat. So, that may be the way to root the Manihot esculenta 'Variegata' as well.
I'm still trying to find out how to germinate seeds [or at least tell others how]. They do come up in my yard from my trees if I don't get all of the seeds, so I KNOW they germinate easily. I am going to try heat and see if that might work.

Anyways, they have two plants left in Lufkin that are either in one or two gallon containers, I didn't pay too much attention.
Another place that has had them in the past is Kings Nursery in Tenaha [north of Nacogdoches]. They grow a lot of plants for SFA.

Emma

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

and i complained about 10.00 for a gallon pot. lol.

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

I am here, never fear....working my butt off and forgetting to check in. *G*

To catch up: Thanks for the offer Moretz, but it looks like the plant is M. esculenta, which isn't the one I'm looking for, although it is a nice looking plant. I was hoping he'd found M. carthaginensis. Oh, well.

Rose and Emma...Clear Lake and Lufkin, both in opposite directions from me, are over a hour's drive. It would cost me more money in gas than it would the cost of the plants to go and find them. My guess is that the reason I can't find it locally is because everyone is snatching them up before I manage to get out and shop around. I don't have much time to do that anymore. :-((

Emma, if you find a variegated form of M. carthaginensis, please let me know. I got my current green one from a plant swap about 6 years ago at Mercer, and I don't even know if I can contact David any more to find out where he got his. He gave me all sorts of odd things. He's kind of odd anyway (in a good way), so go figure. ;-)

I haven't cut that branch off yet, but I will remember to do that today when I get home. I'm not even sure if I can remember where I put all my old nursery pots, it's been so long since I've worked in the yard beyond mowing. *sigh*

is this the one youre talking about?

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/64799/

because i ask is the 2nd name is different then what you have posted? and i dont see much difference in them, can you exsplain the difference please? thxs

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Lemme see if I can explain this without being confusing (wish me luck)...

The one in the link is the one I'm NOT looking for. That one is M. esculenta, and I'm looking for M. carthaginensis. The difference between the two is hardiness and leaf shape. You can see in these photos here how the leaves of M. carthaginensis are lobed and have a lacy appearance.

I saw the variegated form of this a long time ago, and the plant is spectacular looking!

i see what youre saying i love the leaves on that one awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
well see if you can change the title of your post to the name youre looking for, that way someone might happen to see it and say"hay i have that one" lol thxs so much i really like that one as well

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

I tried, but I don't have the option to change it. :-( But, the leaves are so close between those two species, that it wouldn't really matter. Both have the lobed leaves.

hickory, NC(Zone 7a)

well dont worry about it mayeb they will read the post and see that what youre wanting is different well the name that is lol
good luck finding it i will send you a cutting of mine if you like? plmk and thxs

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Up to us...I haven't found anything saying any farther north. I imagine it would need to be in a protected spot, kind of like I have for my green one.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)
