I have cuttings of the green to trade or willing to send postage. This is the one that has the lacey cut foliage. I've been wanting one for awhile, but haven't been actively trading for quite some time. If the green doesn't appeal to you, I'll see what else I may have in my yard, neglected as it is...
(Don't rely on my journal entries for trade info--they're way out of date!)
Wanted: Variegated tapioca plant (Manihot grahamii)
i want one and moretz wants one and tropicanna wants one too. lol.
This plant is very common in our nurseries and can manage easily.
Kaleem
well hello kaleem. come on over and bring us some. lol. have you ever planted seeds? does it come true?
We have this one in our HD & Lowes. They're common down here also. Many people use them as hedges.
Variegated Tapioca

I'll probably be making a HD or Lowes run tomorrow. I'll see what they have in stock.
Otherwise, I can take my dog for a walk around the corner with my clippers. LOL

mama
i am going to see if i can get you one of those so hang in there ok? i wont be able to go look until i get back ok?
demonic laughter erupting. that's been happening all day. i am so excited. but don't get it from plant delights unless you are buds with them and they give you a good deal.
We grow from cttuings and never sen any seed with the plant.
Kaleem
no there is a nursery here locally that i think has it will go and see and if they dont have it yet i know they will this fall and will go ahead and order 2 for this fall i would love to have one but they might be in like a 3 gallon pot will this be ok?i mean it will cost alot to send it to you plmk and thxs
yes. a big plant would be fine and i am guessing that you could cut it way back, wash lots of the dirt away and it would make it fine, you think? how much will the plant be?
im not sure i know it should be wholesale because i used to work there and she lets me have everything i get from her wholesale lol so i will see but it will have to be when i get back ok? so keep your fingers crossed ok?
If you could find a variegated M. grahamii, I'd kiss your feet!
My original plant came from a cutting that was given to me, but this is the first year that I've had mine make seed. The fruit are the size of small jawbreakers. Mine bloomed last year, but never made any seed. Mine looks like the plant in the link below.
The variegated M. esculenta is pretty popular around here, but I'm not real crazy about the leaves on them. I like the M. grahamii leaves better. It's a beautiful plant!

heeeeeeeeeey.............the original postee retook her thread. lol. queen b., do you eat this tapioca fruit? what's it taste like? and there are no pictures of flowers in the plant files. do you have a picture of it blooming? what color and how big? and is it true that this plant.........the grahamii...... is hardy to zn 7? how big is yours and do you grow it in the ground? did you start any of the seeds?
Yep, it's mine doggone it, and we're here today discussing why I don't have one of these plants yet! LOL
I also want to add a correction here...I think I may have M. carthaginensis, which is supposed to be native here to Texas and is sometimes confused with M. grahamii. I did some reading, and found that I'm actually looking for variegated M. carthaginensis. All information is pointing me that direction.
Confused yet?
About your questions, well, let's see...
1. I don't think the fruit are edible. However, from what I read, they like to explode like castor beans do. Not good, but I have RoundUp handy if I need it. They don't look like anything I'd eat, anyway. They're related to the scourge of the South, Tallow trees, so the fruit are are rounded version of that, with three chambers.
2. Yes, as a matter of fact, I have taken photos of the flowers. Why I haven't posted them to the PF's yet is beyond me, but they are similar in size and color to the ones pictured for M. esculenta (small, pale yellow with orangy stamens inside).
3. If my plant is either M. grahamii or M. carthaginensis, then YES, it may be hardy in zone 7 in a sheltered place. Mine is growing next to my house on the west side, and has only suffered frost damage on the tips. It grows kind of leggy, but has reached the top of my house this year (at least 12 ft.). The trunk of it now is not quite as big around as my forearm. It's taken 3 years for it go from the size of a skinny little switch to this.
4. I have never grown it from seeds, since this is the first time it's made any. From what I've read, they sprout pretty easily. This is the reason many people in zone 9 and higher are not recommended to grow it in their yards as they may end up with lots of unwanted babies.
Free seeds in the fall to whoever wants them!!
Stacey
Stacey I sure would love to have a few seeds in the fall to add to my gardens...
I have never seen this before.
Peggy
well do you have a picture of the 12 foot tall plant...........can you do one of those for us? and i want some seeds. and i want to see as many pictures as you are willing to share.
yes i would lvoe some seeds also please and thxs
queenb. and moretz................found the plant today. it costs 10 bucks. in a gallon pot. over a ft. tall. stalk about the size of your index finger........give or take. lol. this nursery used to be such a good nursery but now they have gone to growing their own stuff and charge twice the price. i was so mad. but the plant is really gorgeous.
queen b. if i bought one of them how long will it take to grow to where i could take cuttings. right now it has a single stalk. does it ever branch? and is it easy to root? i figure it is but let me hear what your experience is. and i ain't saying i am buying it because i am still mad that it cost 10 bucks.
I went to Lowes today and no luck there. The neighbor has var. arbiracola which looks similar but it's not. I'll keep looking around here.
Jan,
Caldwell's has some nice plants. It made me think of Crotons, and the nice ones I used to have - I don't know why I got away from them. Mine were hit hard by frost, and I never replaced them. Oh well....
I have a variegated tapioca, it looks like this:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/49340/
I seem to remember mine having some red in the foliage - I'll check it out tomorrow (it's dark now). It's small, I just put it in a few weeks ago, and it hasn't grown a real lot. Remember seeing it?
So how's your garden doing? Did you find room for all of those plants? Give some to your sister? The Mickey Mouse is still pushing out the pups - there must have been a dozen so far this year, at least, all from that one plant.
The Plumie is doing great, although it stopped flowering after I put it in the ground. I kept it in the pot, and put some crushed gravel under the pot, for drainage. I don't think it's getting too much water; I'm not sure why it stopped flowering. I traded for a bloom booster. I'll give the Plumie some as soon as it arrives.
I hope your summer is going well.
Steve
Hi Steve,
The plants are doing great. Shellabella & I met up with Monchi last week and she took home some EE's & one of the Mickey Mouse's. On the way to the nurseries, I dropped off a load of plants to someone who is disabled and couldn't afford plants for her yard.
I'm saving some to take to my sisters later this summer when we get more rain and no one is there to water regularly right now. The plumie is probably just taking a break.
Jan...
Jan,
I'm glad you were able to give some to somebody who could really use them, who might go without, otherwise. It's good to see that you're sister is getting some, too, after all she's been through. I couldn't think of a better use for them. If they stayed here, they would have spent the winter in the greenhouse, collecting spider mites.
Steve
Hi Kaleem,
How are you? I haven't heard from you in a while! I'm glad to see that the Broms are doing well.
I hope you are well, too.
Steve

LOL I've passed many a plant that I REALLY wanted simply because the place was too proud of it.
I've never grown one from a cutting, but from what I understand, it's pretty easy. I'm not sure if you need to take green growth or woody growth. I'll look it up. I have a branch that sprouted farther down the trunk that I've just neglected to prune off, so if it can be done, I could probably make 4 or so nice plants out of it. It does branch, but you have to prune the top out of the stem to make it. When the tips froze on mine, it just made new branches under the bad spots and moved on. It will also put off new branches on it's own in the spring. I'd say under good conditions (lots of sun, fertilizer, and a big pot), you could probably take cuttings off of it in a couple of months. They don't have to be very big. Mine was a twig in a 6 inch pot when it got it, and it lived in that for another two years before it went into the ground. Mine went from about 18 in. to what it is now in three summers. I was amazed at how fast it grew when given unlimited room!
I'll have to bring my good camera home from work tomorrow to take a pic of the whole thing. My camera here is an older model and doesn't do very well for far shots. I thought I had some photos of the leaves, but I can't seem to find them. :-/
Stacey
you know what got me was that even though it isn't, they had it marked as an ANNUAL. i pointed out that that was an error but to market as an annual and then charge 10 bucks. arrrrgh!!!! this place used to at the end of the year put all of their stuff in the half price barn. now nothing but the same old tired plants get put out there. i rarely do business with them anymore. i doubt i am going to buy this thing but we will see. lol.
This photo here gives you an idea of how it will look in your yard. Mine has more of a trunk and the branches don't start until about 5 ft. up.

I also found information that says a seed can easily grow 8' in one season, and that cuttings are really easy to make. I guess today I'll take off that wayward branch and make some new plants with it.

i want a green one i think more than the var. because it's hardy here. i have found someone that has some variety of it for trade so i may get the green. and maybe later in the summer i may visit the nursery to see if any branches are broken that i could root. lol.
You're welcome to some of mine if you want it. I have no clue what I'd do with 4 more trees.
do you already have plants? or are you just about to start some? i will get one from you if you have one. so lmk. and besides this plant, what else are you looking for? i might buy this ridiculously priced plant and if i do i'll let you know. lol.
I'm about to start some. That one branch is way down at the bottom, sticking out all funny and up against the house. I was considering the other day of pruning it and tossing it, but I didn't know there was a real demand for the plant, so I'll just make a few out of it. It shouldn't take too long to root it.
I can't think offhand anything else I'm looking for...I went on a daylily kick the year before last, and still have a bunch of those in pots (go figure), and all the other stuff that comes to mind right now is hard to come by, and probably the wrong time of year here to be planting them. I really haven't put much thought to wanting a lot lately since we've opened our business and I'm not home to piddle around anymore. LOL My flowerbeds are horrendous.
I did take a peek at your trade list and saw you have Cleopatra. I had some, but mine turned all bronze, then never came back last year. I big clump of Red Stripe that has proven to be more than hardy, and will gladly trade you some on the fall for some. Mine makes some huge rhizomes.
