Thanks Sticks, I just love this thread and have followed it from the beginning one. I never quite felt like my stuff would do here but love it so and with your encouragement I'm here. We have lived here for almost 31 years and no one recognizes it from when we moved here.

I just love jkom51's pictures! WOW. Well, really I haven't seen a garden that I didn't enjoy!! Must be the addiction! But Sticks, where are your pictures on this thread????? Come on, you must have some to post!

i have posted on the first part of this thread....part i or ii ....i am still such a novice and also trying to get hubbie to release his 'lawn'....that is the hard part!!

So pretty Joyous! But Snakes???? OMG I would fall over if one slithered out at me when I was in the garden. Frogs already scare the bejeebers out of me when I am working. :o)

Joyous, your gardens are glorious!! And definitely a cottage garden feel to them - lovely! Thanks for sharing.

Sticks, don't you dare sell yourself short - your gardens are remarkable for such new ones . . . can't wait till next year!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

jkom51, Joyous and sticks_n_stones, you all have wonderful gardens and each reflects the area you live in and all are so different from one another. Isn't that the wonderful thing about gardening? This is maybe the worst month for my garden. The daylilies are over their main bloom months, with only a few left here and there. Really makes me glad I planted some Helenium a couple years ago and also that I have some of the simple annuals like Marigolds and zinnias which do so well inspite of the dryness and heat. Here is one bed in back with a tall Helenium in the center, a Zowie zinnia and Oranges and Lemon gaillardia. The Helenium is Helenium ‘Flammendes Käthchen’, one of my favorites.

lincoln....that is lovely; and yes, i love gardening and how we can all have our pallete...'our piece of earth' and make it our own....quite interesting how we express ourselves....

Thanks. Here is a close up of Helenium ‘Flammendes Käthchen’ flowers.

Lincolnitess,

Those Heleniums are ultra fabby! Are they blooming now or are those pics from last year? I don't even grow Helenium, so I need to get some for sure! ‘Flammendes Käthchen’. LOL! Never seen it in any catalog, where'd you get it?

I have some lovely Dreamland Pink and Red mix from you (must have been from a swap we were in together) blooming right this second. The plants and flowers are lovely. The only difference I can see from Dreamland itself is the height of the plants is different. Some short like Dreamland and some a bit taller,,,,all are wonderful!

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Lincolnitess, I love the Helenium, especially the ‘Flammendes Käthchen’. I think I have that one the colors really grab me. I have 4 different ones, one had variegated leaves last year but this year they don't seem to be. I also like your 'Oranges and Lemons Gaillardia' very bright and cheerful. I am really beginning to appreciate zinnias they are such a cheerful filler.

I agree that all our gardens are special and the great thing is we can enjoy and learn from each other.
This is the helenium that I have that I think is like yours.

Suzy, I'm glad to know that the Dreamland zinnias come back fairly true. I bought some again this year because they did so well the first year. Now I will try growing some from seed. Here are some of the pinks ones I have in front. The ‘Flammendes Käthchen’ came from Digging Dog nursery. It is not as tall as some of the others I have. Maybe 4 1/2 foot. The photo was taken today. I really needed something to add color this time of the year. In this photo you can see FH in the first bed and in the bed behind it is a taller Helenium behind the red daylily that opens a little later than FH. It is just starting to open and is taller. Maybe by a foot. It is called "Red and Gold" There is also a shorter one in that back bed called Marti Gras that was just planted this year and not doing much yet.

On one side of the front arbor I have the Copperlia Helenium and on the other side 'Zimbelstern' a taller yellow one which I think I will move next spring so I can have Copperlia on both sides. Zimbelstern is just starting to open a few blooms now and Copperlia has been in full bloom for about a week.

Here is another shot of the front taken today. I really miss the daylilies when they stop blooming. A few will rebloom yet this fall.

Stunning, Lincolnitess!!! Gorgeous individual flowers and absolutely wonderful flower beds - nice work!!!

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

lincolnitess, I really enjoyed your pictures, you have a talent for putting plants together!

The Helenium flowers are new to me, I especially like the ‘Flammendes Käthchen’ . I like the color and the fact that it blooms late. Do you think you might be able to save some of the seeds of the Helenium plants for me? I would love to try and grow them from seed.

Joyous, wow, great pictures. I love the dark coleus! I put the Palisandra coleus thoughtout my shade garden. The wall garden picture was superb!

Here is my Palisandra coleus with my orange begonia. The begonia bulbs are really blooming nicely now, in the picture they had just started.

Toofew, nice way to use that coleus. I like how it picks up the color in the brick. I think dark plants set off our other plants in a great way. Does Palisandra take much sun?

Joy

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

toofew, I love the purple coleus with the orange begonia. I will be glag to save some of the Helenium seeds for you. I have never tried growing any from seeds so not sure if they will come back true, so will be interesting to see what you get.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Joy, The Palisandra are planted in several spots along this wall, they get anywhere from 2 to 5 hours of sun a day without any difference in how they perform. I've never tried them in more sun.

Lincolnitess, Ok, I'm going to try to remember to remind you of the H. seed. :o)

I've been trying to stretch the blooming season in my gardens. To that end I started a variety of plants from seed last spring. I didn't think too much about color combinations or size--and some of them have grown much bigger then they were supposed to. Some combinations turned out well, like the cleomes in a variety of whites, pinks and purples mixed with pink sweet peas and purple butterfly bush. Others, like the tithonia and cleomes side by side look pretty garish. The butterflies don't seem to mind though. they are loving the heck out of it!

Here are a few photos taken this evening.

Cleomes grow in the foreground while sweet peas climb the arbor.

Tithonia (Mexican Sunflowers) I started from seed growing in front of the garage. I never expected them to get so huge. the clump in the background is around 9' tall!

Well here it is. Check out the color combos and plant sizes in this photo. The cup plant at left front is 10' tall. I'm going to move it this fall. The oranges and pinks look absolutely garish. The butterflies don't care.
