I`m experimenting with natural remedies such as soap and water and a few other things..out of necessity. If I don`t do something here in my humid southern garden all of my plants would get eaten very quickly.
I have been there done that with avoiding any treatments and my roses almost all died of disease not to mention they were almost consumed by insects and I had to prune them all back and try to save them.
Nils are susceptible to fungus disease and tiny little black mites turn the leaves yellow so I will have to stay after it with a suitable remedy and I`m hoping for finding a environmentally friendly solution that works.
Applying any treatment in the evening avoids burning the leaves and it will not disturb bees on their rounds and your flowers need to be pretty in the morning anyway.
I`ll keep everyone posted. This could take a while. You have to find what works in your garden. It takes trial and error.
Seed Give Away JMG cross pink blizzard x purple blizzard F2
Mine are sown, too.
Mine too.
Mine have poked their heads up already! Pink / Purple Blizzard X are on the way :) I can't wait to see these guys mature.
Gourd reporting in here....
All 5 seeds germinated and are living inside till they get a couple of leaves, not chancing it outside yet..
They look healthy with tinges of red around the edges of cotyledon leaves.
Arlene's update. All 5 seeds have germinated and have put on a few leaves. Will try to post a picture later. Very healthy and they loved the rain we got last night. Have them on my deck under the pagoda.
Me too update: 4 out of 5 are up, going to peek to see what is up with the 5th one in a bit.
4 of mine are up!
All 5 of mine are up. : )
~Lucy
It seems like I'm the only one who hasn't started the seeds yet! My hands are full with the plants I've got going now, so I'm going to wait and maybe start them indoors during the winter.
Syrumani, Wait until next year. You will get a sneak peek at what you`ll get soon. :)
Sorry I didn't get back, it was raining when I last wrote. I went back out later that day and #5 had stuck it's little head up. So all are present and accounted for.
It was raining today, but when I quickly looked I saw at least 3 seedlings sprouting! Now the fun begins! :-)
Very cool! Mine are growing vines already.
I did 3 and all are up. Will post a photo after battery charges...
Every seed I planted sprouted! Very viable seeds.
Something important has come up so I came by here to mention:
Erynne, Your seeds came back to me returned to sender. I checked the address and it is the same as what you have in the exchange. What should I do now?
And the new babies look great. I got some with the light color in the cotyledons as well. They are growing good so far.
(Now back to playing catch up with the watering...seed picking etc.)
Karen
Karen - All 5 of mine have sprouted. We had some pretty hard down pouring rain the past several days. The seedling on the left side got pretty pelleted. And another had part of the stem snapped off. But despite all of that, they do seem to be growing and looking pretty healthy! I set the stakes up as you suggested. Now its all about waiting for them to grow bigger and to see what kind of blooms I'm going to get.
I hope you are getting caught up and can come back and join us here very soon!
My fifth one germinated but is behaving strangely, it looks "weak". I'm going to try and give it some TLC, it could be a really cool one.
I transplanted all five into two 3gallon containers yesterday and they look great this morning.. they are ready to rock & roll....
Alright, super! Mine are busy growing vines. So far so good. :)
I have a feeling the blooms will happen sooner since it is late in the year. Last year many of the plants I started late also bloomed in less time.
Ya`ll behave and quit sending me money. :) kidding
.... really I got it covered.
Maybe, if you feel like you "owe" me then just tuck in a few seeds to send back to me later. Fall seed trading is fun. :)

I have a slight dilemma with one of the seedlings. During a hard down-pour of rain, the tender stem between the 2 first leaves broke off. No new leaves are forming .... instead the one starter leaf is getting bigger and bigger. Is this vine a goner or will it eventually grow it's first true leaves? You can easily see the vine since it has the biggest leaf.
Hi beckygardener,
A few casualties are normal. Out of a pot of five seeds it will be good to have 3 survivors. Many times they all make it and sometimes you loose vines for no apparent cause. So don`t be concerned if they don`t all make it to maturity. Just enjoy them.
Here is a update on mine that I have started. They are growing and it will be maybe a month or so before they begin to bloom. It will be interesting to see the ratios of colors and different variations that might show up.
The rain has finally let up!!! I`m about to get very busy with school starting and school supplies. I`ll be back when the plants bloom. Anyone who can share pictures of blooms please feel free.
I hope everyone is getting plenty of rain for these flowers to do good. It is a good idea to collect rain water and pour over them for when it gets dry. If you cover or bottle the stored water then it can`t breed mosquitos.
Everyone have a good day and I`ll see ya`ll again later.
Here`s the vine:
Gardner2005I would like to have some of your morning glory seeds. For Postage? or trade. I have flamboyant and confederate rose. Your morning glories are so pretty. How big are the Flowers? I have a morning glory bush and it has big flowers on it also but never seen any seeds. Easy to root tho. They are kind of lt purple. Fran
You got Dmail. :)
Just for fun, I took one of the seedlings and brought it inside. That way I can compare the growth with the other 3 outside. Of course, they will all have to come in sometime in October, before the first frost!
Beth, I think that is really cool. We will find out if she behaves well inside the house. I`ll check back here as soon as I get a bloom. I have some little buds already!
Can you fertilize MGs, or best not? I've heard yes and no. Mine are starting to vine, and are a lighter green than the plants around them.
~Lucy
I noticed mine putting up a little finger of a vine this morning too. And yes lighter green as well.
Anne
Karen - All of mine sprouted about the same time, but one is just literally taking off! Seems to have wrapped around one of the bamboo poles and climbing to reach the sky. No buds yet, but at the rate it is growing, I expect to see some soon! So strange to only see one of the vines doing this. I expected them to all grow at about the same rate. HA! Apparently not!
Yes,do expect to see differences in the vines since this is a F2 growout resulting from a cross of two colors, patterns and different habits of vines. I would like it if everyone could check the flower colors nd mark the vines near the bottom so we could have a sort count...but only if you got time! This is supposed to be fun so do what you can when you can get to it.
If you get one you particularly like you can tag and begin to bag or tie blooms to grow again to promote the features you have chosen to continue. Any vine that thrives well is a keeper.
If any of them look puny and they have begun vining then go ahead and feed them some fertilizer made for blooming plants. I mix it according to instructions for flower beds and just pour enough to wet the soil about once in 10 days twice usually. Two feedings usually work but give more if needed. Go by what you are seeing.
Look out for pests, fungus or especially rust.
Beth, I would love it if you had some all natural home remedies for such things as aphids, mites, fungus and rust which ipomea nils are susceptiple to. Share some ideas with us if you got time. You must catch these problems before they start and prevention is worth a pound of cure.
They are doing great here, they haven't started to vine, but look like they will any day now.. it's been very humid here (and I thought it was desert) will take photos sometime in the coming week. So far, so good. I have 3 in one pot and 2 in another pot for easier tagging.
A.
Erynne, I`m having trouble sending your seeds. It is back again for the second time. It appears I need a customs form to mail this to your destination. I`ll see what I can do.
Karen
Gardener2005, I would love a couple of seeds too, if you're able, just tell me what you need me to do.... :)
Brittany
