Best time to photo flowers?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wouldn't it be a fun thread to do in summer - talking about winter?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

bite your tongue Arlene!!!!! I now have visions of 4ft drifts, icy roads and subzero temps!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Low humidity, cool fresh air, fluffy snow.....ah!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Low humidity, cool fresh air, green Christmas . . . . ah! (I don't like snow either - Gosh, I'm fussy . . . )

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I even like making snowmen and snow women. I also like the smell of firewood burning (yes, Victor) in the fireplace.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You know what I like about winter - winter sowing seeds! I can hardly wait to start!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I appreciate the down time for my aching back.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I am really looking forward to winter sowing this year. I didn't do it last year (we had a new house put in in August and just didn't have the urge to winter sow but missed it immensely) so I'm really looking forward to doing it this year. I'm not going to do tons, just a few (less than 20) pots but can't wait.

I had a couple of wintersown beauties smiling at me yesterday :) These were winter sown 2 years ago so they are nice, established plants now :)

This is Osculara (Rose Campion) "Blush". At first the flowers seemed all white but then she started blushing :) I would really like to try the all red ones if someone should have a few seeds this fall :)

And this is Foxglove and if I remember right it was called Strawberry Foxglove :)

Very pretty Kim!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Why thank you Sofonisba :)

If you would like any seeds from the Rose Campion, I know I will have tons of them. I'm not sure if my foxglove will make seeds or not but I know the Rose Campion will :)

Thanks! When you start getting seeds, please remind me. That'll be nice!

Harper, be sure to check out the seed trading forum as I usually post everything there :)
These make TONS of seeds and reseed in the garden (but not invasively). They are easy to pull if they end up somewhere you don't want them :)

Kim

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, Kim - I'll take some that action on the rose campion if you have tons to spare :-)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Added it to your Balloon Plant list Michaela :)
Here is an "overall" shot of the whole plant, as you can see, she can get quite large. After blooming the mother plant dies off (if I remember right) and the babies grow to become mother's of their own :) So she shows up all over the garden (kind of like columbine). I have the hot pink one too but didn't get a mom plant this year only babies that will be moms next year *lol* The foliage is so pretty though even when not in bloom. Soft and grayish/blue like Lambs Ear (which I don't have any of for some reason *lol*)

Yes Kim - I was admiring the foliage and not paying as much attention to the flowers!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

You are more than welcome to some seeds too if you'd like :)

Here is a baby that will be a mother next year and I'm hoping it's my hot pink as I miss it this year. There is also a red one that I would really like.

Here is a shot from last year of the hot pink one.

Thanks - I might take you up on that offer.

I know that as I age each day,
My life is better, at least they say.

I find its trip is sure and plotted,
Every thing and moment slotted.

No time to plant or tend to flower,
Pillar to post, hour by hour.

Roadside and hillside they grow like weeds,
They can’t be flowers, they have no needs.

Besides I don’t have time to play in the dirt,
I’m much to busy on TV alert.

Let somebody else dig, plant and water,
I’ll call the florist if I need to order.

Too Bad!

We hear similar things from those who "can't be bothered" growing their own tomatoes when they can "buy just as good" from local farmstands.

BUT.....when you're tired and weary and the thought of a BLT sounds divine and you can pick the perfect tomato from your own garden, there is no such thing as "just as good".

I really like that "blush" Rose Campion, Kim....it's very ethereal looking, which I love. That must look really gorgeous in the evening hours.

Well, I took up more hard drive space today...things look different every day, it seems, so it's impossible NOT to take pics. My husband just doesn't understand this.

I don't have a lot of "flowery" flowers due to having 99.5% shade in the yard. This Heuchera bloomed the entire summer after I planted it last year and I hope it does it again this year. This was taken at twilight, which I like for the warm glow of light.

Great poem Chuck!

Kim, that rose campion is gorgeous.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

wonderful pics, everyone! I think gardening inspires good photography! another good reason for gardening.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Ooo, and lovely photos Noreaster.

Right on Pirl!!

Pirl, since I started growing tomatoes, I just cannot eat a store-bought one.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

But you can play ball with them with your boys.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

2 slices of homegrown tomato, two slices of bread. one small dollup of mayo. NIrvana.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Anyone who would like some of the "Blush" Rose Campion just send me a D-Mail and I will be more than happy to send you some as I know I'm going to have TONS of this to share.

Funny little story about tomatoes. When my son was about 3 years old he and his buddy went outside to "play ball". I never thought of it but he had hit his last baseball into the woods (he could hit like a teenager even at 3 *lol*) the day before. When they came in from playing ball I asked him...."Josh, what did you use for a ball"? and he said "Mommy, Chris and I found some "wild tomatoes" growing in the woods". I said to him "why don't you show me where these "wild tomatoes" are". Needless to say, they were from my neighbors garden and the boys had taken every single one and used it as a baseball. I had Josh knock on the neighbors door and explain what had happened. Luckily my neighbor was very forgiving (I could tell he was a bit disappointed) but he knew how hard it was for Josh to admit what he had done and I had done many favors for them in the past so he just chuckled it off. Never again did we play ball with "wild tomatoes" *lol*

Just a bit of garden humor......sorry to all those that grow veggies......hate to say it but as far as veggies go, I am one of those that would rather pay the asking price at the side of the road veggie stands as I know how much work goes into growing veggies and the same passion must exist for veggies as for flower growers. I think the side of the road prices are wonderful and prefer to use my space for flowers......OK....you can all kick me now *lol*

Actually my veggie gardening is WAY easier than the flower gardening since it's in a controlled environment - the veggie boxes. It's really just plant, water when needed and harvest. Soaker hose makes the watering easy. No weed problem to speak of. Perfect drainage.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor - we'll get her hooked - just give it time.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

It is ironic that by the time your veggies are ready to eat, they are cheap & local.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not as cheap and local as my own. Nice to see you Dave.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

And if you are very lucky you'll have just enough lettuce for your BLT.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm working on a Bacon plant. Organic Turkey Bacon, of course.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It will be too late to have with Dave's strawberries but I'll share my raspberries. The cowbird copped the blueberries - we had a total of five.

Mine aren't quite ready to bloom yet but they are growing nicely :)

Lovely shot.
