One among the crowd of aspiring candidates...

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

In our state, [it is bigger than Great Britain] thousands of candidates pass out of school each year. Aside from college examinations they have to write a common entrance test [CET]. They are all given ranks using both the college examination as well as CET into consideration. Many of them look to join Engineering courses in various branches, while others choose the medical or science line. There are a few hundreds of colleges around the state where they will be joining. Earlier each college had its own rule and fee structure which had led to corrupt practices that affected the common public. To prevent that, the govt. streamlined and organized the entire activity [considered the best in the country]. Selection is on first come first serve basis according to their ranking. Number of seats are defined in the brochure beforehand. As and when the candidate chooses his or her seat there, everybody knows it on the huge display board. So there is no scope for any dirty activity. With the candidate, one person is allowed in to veriry the documents and accompany for any help as the seat availability situation keeps on changing every moment. My DW had gone in with DD while many parents and students waited outside. Bulletins showing the latest situation are also sold every hour. I managed to take a couple of candid shots while we were all waiting before they were called in. Here is a section of the people looking at the display screen.

Dinu, what a nerve-nagging process LOL, but I think it is the same everywhere. Candidates and parents have a hard time during this selection process.

Thanks for taking us on another 'trip to India'.

Observe those anxious faces! They come with fingers crossed and with some expectation as well.

Dinu with India having the large population that it has, if I may be so bold to ask, how do yall find positions for the steady stream of graduates that must be coming out of these schools every year. Even here in the US it takes a very dynamic economy to support such a large number of trained individuals. I have heard that India is a growing tech based country but the economic growth would have to be mind boggling to handle such large numbers. This kind of growth can not come without some types of problems as well. Glad to her that your daughter is trying to get in, let us know how it turns out and what field is she attempting?

Don,
My D has presently chosen Civil engg. but if a better option arises in the next and final round [some people may leave for better courses by then] she will choose. Computers.. electronics.. they all get filled by the higher ranked. Surely I'll keep you posted here.

The system is organized, but the problem is the number of people. It takes a long time for people to wait and get jobs done. It's improving now with the application of computers in many places. Indeed the number of students that pass out each year is mind boggling. The Govt. has to balance the number of seats available in colleges too. This time, the number of students passed was more than the seats available. For students having a lower rank, they had very less chance and some have returned empty handed and they have to either join some course here or to wait for the next round if any slot opens for them - remote chance.

Dinu thank you for the explanation of how all this is done for your good students. I am so glad that your system isn't as corrupt as it used to be. That had to be terribly hard on the students and their families too to have the schools be greedy and corrupt.

I'm sorry to say that corruption is a deep-rooted problem. If some good samaritan tries to root them out, he is sent away, again through wicked means. But some improvements are seen here and there. But the C goes on in different levels - it has its own chain.

Oh Dinu I am sorry to hear that. I wish we could talk further but I am sure that might go against the rules.

I agree with you Lani.
