Plumeria Pictures as Promised

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank you Chantell and everyone... Chantell I did not know you had plumerias... I have 4 that are blooming now and I know for sure one more has and inflo... I am just thrilled to see blooms.. I only started buying these almost a year ago... We went to Hawaii in April 06 and we had a tree outside of our room and every morning they would sweep the plumerias up... Think I ever seen one for sale? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO but I have to admit I never looked... Then we came home and I was shocked to see how many were around... Well I have a good 50 about now give or take a few...LOL I am still green behind the ears about them yet... I have killed my far share and I am sure I will kill a few more, but I love them...
Ok yacked everyones ears enough...

FIFTY?!? OMG!! Ok....well now....ummm...how did you collect 50 in ONE year?!! Mercy!! I have....let's see...a grand total of...10....yup that's it!! :)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Clare... 'Almost Black' may not be almost black, but it still looks yummy... reminds me of black cherries!

Susan... I agree with Chantell... 50!!!! Wow! I think I'll stick with my one rooted, and two hopefuls for now... since my garden is an 8x12 blacony!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I really became addicted to these... I hear from others that this is very easy to do with these.. I think they are the hardest for me to grow but yet the prettiest flowers ever... Plus I have had help from a lady I met off of ebay and she took me under her wing and has tought me most of what I know... She also rooted for me over 20 when I was kinda having no luck doing this.. Now I can also root without killing...LOL
Work for me tomorrow so off to bed I go... Yack at you all tomorrow...
Susan

Thanks, Chantell and VA Wild Rose! This thread may get really long by the time I finish posting all my pics so those who have flowers to show also may want to start your own new thread.

Here is one that opened last night. It is 'Wave Rage,' also called 'Raspberry Whimsey,' I'm told.

Here is 'Almost Black' again.

Your yard must smell awesome!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

It does, Davie, but mostly from the Stephanotis, Bovardia, and Brugmansias in bloom. In a month or two, the fragrance of the plumerias will take over. Here are some pics of where the fragrance is coming from. This is Stephanotis:

This is the Stephanotis with the Bouvardia:

This Brugmansia fills the whole front yard with scent:

This one does too:

Here is 'Henry Apples Dupree' opening today for the first time. It is supposed to smell wonderful, but I'm not getting anything yet.

Clare, how do you get your Stephanotis to bloom? That is one plant that I can not get to bloom. I have a healthy plant, but no flowers. I have tried them before and given up, but after a while I will get another thinking that this time it will be different.

This is a generic no-name yellow:

This is one I call 'Walt's White':

Joe, my Stephanotis blooms every year, but I have it outside all year so blooming could be signaled by some winter chill or by hours of darkness. If you have yours inside during the winter, it might not be receiving the signals that it needs to bloom. Mine gets full sun.

Last one for the day, Cyndi Moragne is so pretty!

Clare,
Thanks so much for posting the picture of 'Stephanotis' in full bloom on the trellis. I didn't know that the plumeria growth habit would climb a trellis. It is a beautiful plant and I can just imagine the fragrance !

I have 7 plants that I check each morning for the little bloom buds in between the new leaves. I've had this addiction for about 8 months now am waiting for the first bloom for me.

Hi Louise,

Sure! I have actually had it on a few different trellises/arbors and have moved it a few times, but it is a good climber.

Hope you get blooms soon!

I have to check with Kukiat on this one. I may have confused the names of my lavenders when I first got them a couple of years ago. This may be "Siam Mauve" and not "Siam Lavender." In any case, I think it is gorgeous.

Clare,
I am in awe of all of your flowers... They are all just so pretty... I love how you had the 4 of them together... Just beautiful... Hey you want to take me under your wing and teach me somemore??? :-)
Susan

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

LOL, thanks, Susan! I wish I had the time to teach more, but my previous threads here and my FAQ's compilation and my article here at Dave's on growing plumerias will have to do;-)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Gee Oh well... LOL Thanks Clare for playing... I like you will take it one day at a time and we all have to start somewhere don't we?
Really nice pictures...
Susan

(Zone 11)

Clare, is your "Almost Black" getting darker flowers as it goes along?
The inflo does look pretty dark. Thanks for sharing. :~)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks again, Susan. I think you will find that plumerias are very easy to grow. I don't think you will have any trouble. Keeping them warm in the winter will be the hardest part for you probably, but there are a couple of sections on overwintering in the FAQ's to help you.

Hi Dave! Did you get some of Evelyn's plumies? I can't remember now if it was you or Davie from Arizona -- maybe both of you. I'm not sure if they are getting darker. We are having a real heat wave so it wouldn't surprise me if the flowers start getting darker. I'll post a picture after a few more flowers open and let you know.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

OMG!!! That "side yard" brug with those absolutely gorgeous doubles and the fabulous tendrils are totally UNREAL!!!

Like Clare said it needs full sun or it will not bloom!
It will grow nice and green in the semi-shade but needs the full sun to make it flower..

That is not a plumeria..
;=)

They do however have a frangipani vine that's pretty woody..
Have a look see..

Nice pics as always Clare thanks for the eye candy..
That Almost Black is a dead ringer for the Hilo Beauty in my eyes..

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Teresa! That is my Brugmansia seedling 'Duchess.' I love her. She is a fantastic bloomer and smells great. I should be registering her this year.

Thanks, Robert. I didn't even catch that about the plumeria growth habit! LOL! I think he meant Stephanotis growth habit;-) You could be right about 'Almost Black.' That wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Here is another pic of my Siam Lavender today. It is so gorgeous. It really is purple.

My definite favorite by far is the 'Almost Black'. It gets better with each picture you post! Can't wait to see more! Does it have a fragrance?

Karen

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Karen, it has a very slight fragrance. Most reds lack a strong fragrance for some reason. I'll post more of that one as more buds open for sure.

Nice flower indeed Clare...
I am convince that Almost Black is the Hilo Beauty after looking at mine again..

heavy on the shadows there. LOL

very nice pics of almost black. was that chosen because of the look of the buds before they open?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

I think you are right, Robert. I'll add the name to the name tag with a question mark added since there is no way to be sure, but I think you are right.

Dete, I'm not sure. It is true the buds are very dark. If I remember correctly, I bought 20 cuttings for $60 last summer from Evelyn, and this one was one of them. Not bad for $3!
