Tex, our new master database server

Our new database server arrived at my house today. This server was furnished by the excellent folks at NameMedia, and is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with two dual-core Xeon 2.33Ghz processors, 8 gigs of RAM, redundant hot-swap power supplies, and 6 (count 'em) 73GB 15K SAS drives in a RAID10 configuration.

This is the fastest computer I've ever sat down in front of, and it serves the DG homepage in 0.06 seconds (that's just 6 jiffies, or 6/100 of a second).

I'm configuring it now, and will install it in Dallas on Tuesday night and bring it into operation sometime on Wednesday.

Dave

AWESOME!!!

Pages are loading faster tonight than they have in a while. And this is before you put Tex to work! This is going to be awsome!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Now all DG addicts can get their fix faster. Dave, you are an enabler!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Tex, you big hunk, welcome to the family!

A good update!

Yesterday I installed the new server in Dallas and it came up beautifully without a hitch. Last night (from my hotel room in Boston!) I configured the server and got it all setup. This morning I have the database replicating from the current master (spirit) and I think tonight after the roundup, I will switch it over as the new database master!!! I'm excited to see just how fast DG will be after I make the switchover.

dave

Dave, lately I think you have a red cape with a big D on it. Now I'm convinced of it. Is it Wednesday already?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I think it will be fun to see what I can all hit as a top speed. I will try to remember to play online tonight, but I am going out to dinner with a serious champagne drinker, so goodness knows what shape I will be in upon returning. I wish I could have made the RU. Hope it was great fun, and I know you had great weather. Patti

We are now running on the new database server!! The switchover went without any problems and zero downtime.

I never even noticed. lol. Congrats!!!

Yay! Everything is working beautifully! Thank you, Dave.

I just noticed that the jiffies aren't displayed at the bottom of the pages anymore. When did you take those away and will you be putting them back? I thought it was neat to see. :o)

Dave, I just got this a minute ago when leaving the Equine forum. I wasn't able to access the site again til I left and went to another one.

I had to recompile the Apache web server to work with the new database server, and there were some interruptions that should have only been a few seconds long. I'm recompiling the last server right now and it should be done in 5 minutes (at which time there may be another 3 second "blip").

So, in about 10 minutes the site should be 100% up to speed.
