I can't resist. This is the Musa basjoo that I overwintered in the garage.
Brugmansia-Quebec?
Ooo, those looks like some good choices you ordered Ginny!
And your red brugs look so healthy!!! And they look like they're getting quite tall too! I just ran out and measured mine, I figured it was like a foot tall........but it's actualy 16 and a half inches!!! YAY, my baby is growing!
The banana looks great as well, is it one of the ones you started last year?
Steven
The banana is the one I bought last year when I thought my first one didn't overwinter - before it sent out a pup. That one definitely didn't make it this year since I didn't get a chance to protect it at all. The one that I started from seed - Musa ensete - froze in my garage that never freezes, around the same time I lost Isabella :-(
That's a good size for your brug already Steven. You must be a very good brug daddy :-)
--Ginny
hehehe, did I mention I'm asking every little question on the brug forum? I'm determined to get it right this time!
I should get one of those bananas. I could overwinter it in the fruit cellar! After all........it is a fruit!!!
Steven
Steve, germinating is a real test! I got 11 out of 40 seeds to grow, but what a job with the soaking, peeling, then potting. lighting, temperature, preventing rot, etc. Good luck! It's cuttings for me from now on.
The low germination actualy works ok for me, last time I put them in a dame coffee filter and got about 50%. If they all sprout I'll have more brugs then I know what to do with! Plus when we do our swap........yikes, the cellar is going to be full this winter!!!
Ginny, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I've been so busy. I did order from their website. and paid with paypal. Unfortunately, I've lost 2 of the sanguinea already . I was afraid that would happen, because of it being green. I don't want to lose the other ones, So any pointer on saving the others? They are in that rock wool still and in baggies.
Last year a lady from Ottowa gave me, a Versi Peach, a Frosty pink Candida and that white one, as plants, , which I overwintered in their pots, Had a hard time with spider mites and I think I had broad mite on one too. So I treated it with neem oil. Which worked good.
Since they've been outdoors, they have really picked up. Now I'm waiting for them to make me a show. So will have some to trade
I did try starting with seeds, but am terrible with nurturing seedlings. I kill them with kindness.:)
Don't worry about it burn - time often gets away from me too :-)
I've never yet tried to root brug cuttings, green or otherwise, so I'm afraid I'm no help to you there. Have you tried asking your questions over on the Brugmansias forum?
I always end up having problems with spider mites and fungus gnats when I try to overwinter things indoors too. I ordered neem oil with my brugs this time, so I'm glad to hear it actually works.
Good luck with your cuttings!
--Ginny
Sanguineas are harder to root than woody stemmed brugs. Sanguineas tend to virus easily and should be replaced every couple of years. They are very easy to start from seed. Buy your seeds off someone in Canada, make sure it is fresh. I usually have 80% or more germination rate. I just sent 5 sangs off to some D gers in BC. I don't have anymore left. Hope this helps.
When I got home from work yesterday my Brugmansia-Quebec order was waiting for me at the post office. Lovely, healthy plants all, and I potted them up right away. I'll get pictures once they get over their shipping experience and post for you to see.
I would recommend this company to anyone in a heartbeat, and I posted feedback on Garden Watchdog to say so :-)
--Ginny
Very nice brug Steven! He's almost all growed up now :-)
--Ginny
Thanks Ginny. wishing for blooms this summer!
Oh, by the way Steven, (slightly off topic) my Musa basjoo that I overwintered in the garage is growing 2 pups! I'll get a pic of that and post it at the same time I post those of my new brugs.
--Ginny
Beautiful brugs! You seem to have the magic touch too :-)
Those are really nice plant Ginny!!! They do send nice healthy stuff.
I might order some double or triple brugs from them. I would really like to find a nice deep coral one. Nice Musa basjoo, is that calla lilies beside your Musa basjoo ?
Nice brugs Burn! What colour is that big one in the ground? it looks really good!!
Ginny, you banana looks awsome! and congrats on the pups!
Your brugs look really healthy! we're going to need our own canadian brug forum!
Steven
ps: does anyone know how tall a seed brug needs to get before it will flower?
Steven, I don't know the color yet. I misplaced my labels when I transplanted them. That's why I need it to bloom this summer, so I can tell, if it's versi peach, or frosty pink. There was a Candida, not sure if it's the white one, the plant was label white only.
From what I've read, brugs will perform differently, in growth and time it flowers.
Yes, those are Calla Lilies beside the nanner burn. The blooms are small because I have them growing in a pot that really isn't big enough for them.
I think you're right Steven. We are going to need our own brug forum pretty soon. As far as when they will bloom, from what I've heard it has more to do with when they "Y" than how old they are. I think they have to "Y" (or be grown from cuttings taken above a "Y") before they will bloom for you. If you look closely at the photos of Versicolor Peche and Charles Grimaldi you'll see it looks like they are "Y"d, so I should get blooms from them this year.
--Ginny
Burn, whatever colour he is I really him :) All your brugs look really good!
Ginny, Your so lucky to have 'Y's on your brugs :) I hope mine makes a Y this year, the anticipation is kiiiillllliinnngg me!!!
now I have to go look again, maybe theres a Y starting and I mssed it................
Steven
BTW, there was a post from a DGer in austrailia who said overthere brugs have a different name, they're called 'weeds'!
LOL It's the CG and VP from Brugmansia-Quebec that have Ys Steven. My red sanguineas from seed sure don't have any yet :-)
Can you imagine thinking of a brug as a weed? Of course the first time I saw Solidago (Goldenrod ) for sale in a catalogue I thought, "Now who in their right mind would want to plant a weed in their garden, let alone actually pay for it!"
BTW burn...your CG cutting is looking really good!
--Ginny
hehehe, even though they're cuttings it's still great! Who knows, maybe the sanguinia will flower this year ;) apparently they do sometimes!
Eeek, I agree on the solidago. that stuff never goes away if you let it in. but maybe the 'cultivated' types are more well behaved??
But back to brugs, I'd of thought they'd only grow as weeds in heaven!
Ginny, that pink Perfektion is going to be lovely, nice color on it too. Can't wait to see it in bloom.
I also have callas growing in my pond. I have the dark pink, a cream yellowish with a black center, and a mauve. Don't really care for the color of the mauve one, it has a big flower, but the color look kinda washed out.
Well guess what.......? I went and did my round today, and found another one that have Y. Yahoooooooooo, soon will have buds, can't wait.
Steven I'll have some cutting for you this fall for sure.
Very nice Callas burn, and congratulations on all the Ys you're finding in your brugs!
I would love to get some Calla bulbs this fall. I lost most of mine last year - they just turned to mush in their 1/2 barrel containers during the summer for some reason. It certainly wasn't because of too much water with the drought we had.
Darn. I took a closer look at the two brugs I thought were Y'ing, and I don't think they are after all - bummer! Oh well, I guess that would have been too good to be true :-)
I have just two brugs, a Charles Grimaldi and a Cuba seedling. I think perennialgirl has a pink one for me too and that's it for me. No room for any more in the winter. I am in fact seriously thinking of downsizing the houseplant list for this winter. The two plumerias won't be coming in again unless I see some bloom this summer. Less of the AVs, Abutilons and geraniums too.
Learned a bit about hardiness this spring. I forgot to put the Cuba seedling in for the night and it went to about -4~-5C overnight. It looked really dead after that, but sprouted out from the lower half - two-thirds and is a nice bush now. No sign of bloom though, so.....it may have it's winter rights threatened too. I am so tired of spraying for spider mites. CG already bloomed this spring, but it has always had a spider mite problem.
I could send cuttings of these two to one of you in the fall, or whenever and you can share. I don't think I want any in return.
Having just decided to get a Brug, my first and only, I checked that Quebec site...for some suspicious reason they seem to be sold out of almost everything...LOL
I know what you mean about paring down the indoor plant storage over the winter Echoes...I'm giving everybody the critical eye myself. I've already dumped 2 oleanders in the mulch bin and one Philo that is so fussy it isn't funny any more.
I've actually been scaling down my houseplants too.
I find that’s how alot of plants get infested with pests is because there’s no time to look after them properly cause there’s just too many........then they get neglected and stressed ect. ect. ect. So for this winter there’s so going to be less plants, but the ones I do bring in will get cared for properly............or at least thats what I'm planning :)
Those are really nice callas Burn! I really like the pink one! I bought a potted one like it on discount, normally 25$ and I got it for 5$! Woooo!
Steven
