Brugmansia-Quebec?

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Has anyone ever dealt with this company before? They aren't in the Garden Watchdog. I have to admit that I don't speak French either :-( so navigating their all-french site means I have to have an online translator open at the same time, and I wonder if they do business in English too. I realize that's rather presumptious of me - I would communicate with them in French if I could.

--Ginny

I have never heard of them but their prices are dirt cheap. I speak French and it looks legit. The arborea picture is definitely an arborea. Order some and see what happens.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

LOL The dirt cheap prices are what made me ask about them in the first place. I don't want to end up with puny little scrawny plants that I'll have to baby through their first winter if I want them to survive for next season!

Less than 12 inches is 5.99. More than 12 inches is 9.99. That's a very good size.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

You're right. That's worth taking a chance on I think.

Hope they're good plants. He hasn't named a lot of the varieties. But that doesn't matter.

Did I miss something what is the name of this place or the link? Would love to check it out to see what's there for doubles.

Just google Brugmansia-Quebec and the website comes up Bea. It looks like they won't have any doubles until 2008.

If you need any translation, you are welcomed!
It seems to be a single person business at its beginning. You might have some nice things there I guess.
The only problem I could think of is the phytosanitary state of the plants. Is the owner getting rid of virused plants? We can never know, even with bigger companies. I got a nice brug from a known company last year and it showed virus signs a few months later. I could be from a bug's bite during the summer though. I will never know, got rid of it.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I noticed Veseys was selling brugs this year -- $30 for a seedling plant. So comparatively, this new company could be a bargain if they provide the same guarantee. Not wanting to brag, but I bought seed and grew my own, so I learned a lot about brugs in the process. I've got 8 now, all doing well, in their second year, and I'm hoping for bloom soon! Piling on the 15-30-15 weekly. Here's one, in a planter.

Ooooooooh, very nice brug! You've done well with your seeds :-) I have one brand new seedling that I'm about to transition outside, but he's only about 6" tall right now. I hope I have him looking like yours by this time next year.

Thanks, Ginny, and good luck with your baby! Overwintering wasn't too hard; I just brought them in around mid-October and let them go semi-dormant in the basement. They perked right up in the spring, especially after being repotted into larger containers.

We've had a lot of wind this spring and many of my babies have shredded leaves as a result. I think my neighbours are wondering why I've featured such ugly plants in my containers. All will be revealed when they burst forth into masses of pink, fragrant blooms... I hope! Here's another... These photos are about a month old and there's been a lot of growth since.

She's cute - looks like she's very healthy.

I hear you about the wind this year. I've kept the brug a friend gave me in a container up close to the back wall of the house just because of that. I normally put them out where everyone can enjoy them as they walk by.

And showing off a little too *wink*

Doncha know it ;-)

I have been to Brugmansia Quebec. Dany is a very nice young man with some nice plants. He does however speak no English. If you email him he will have a friend help read and answer it. He is working hard to expand his inventory, but when he gets them from Europe they have to stay in Phyto for two years.

Check him out, I think you will be happy.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Thanks theraglady. I appreciate getting feedback from someone who knows them.

Watertown, NY

I live in gthe US, but live just 8 miles from the border so often get into Canada. I took a trip tp meet Dany and Julie, they are doing a very good job and with support from other Canadians will build a good business. He works very hard on his plants.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Isn't it sad that I needed someone from the U.S. to tell me how good one of our Canadian companies is? I'll definitely have to give them a try, and I'll make sure they know they had a glowing review from one of our American friends. Thanks again for your referral.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

This past fall, when I brought in my brugs to go dormant, I chopped off the branches above the Y in about one-foot pieces and threw them into a bucket of water with a little hydrogen peroxide to prevent rot. I topped up the water every month or so and they grew masses of roots. In the spring, I potted them up and they are now healthy plants covered with leaves and starting to branch out. I'll be planting them out all over the place this month. I got about 20 plants!

The older trees are now almost three inches at the base and very happy. I've taken them out of their pots and put them in the ground. My plan is to let them go crazy for the summer, and just take cuttings in the fall -- less work and more plants. The display last summer was dazzling!

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Beautiful - breathtaking in fact! I hope I can manage some small portion of the success you've had.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks, ginny, once you've got them, they grow like weeds! But they sure suck up the fertilizer -- I fed mine three times a week with half-strength 15-30-15 water-soluble drinks, and you can see the results! --Andrew

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

That's good to know about the fertilizing schedule. I would probably only have fed them once per week otherwise. Ohhh, now I'm seeing visions of masses of brug blooms :-)

--Ginny

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

We'll want to see photos!

I've planted most of my 2-year trees in the ground, so it will be interesting to see how they do. I'll still fertilize heavily as above. The cuttings are all in pots and I will plunge them (as they say) in larger pots for the summer.

(Zone 6a)

Wow, those are really nice brugs Andy!!! I hope mine looks that good by this time next year! I started one in the spring and those great DGers over on the brug forum helped me out alot as I didn't want to kill another one..........

How are your brugs coming Ginny? I remember you were starting some of the red sanguinea ones.

Mines a suaveolens pink, I think she needs a name though...

Definitely photos will be forthcoming.

My Brugmansia sanguinea seedlings are coming along pretty good considering I first battled those horrid spider mites and then a bad infestation of fungus gnats before I could finally get them outside. I have 3 that are doing very well and one (or is it 2?) that is recovering but has some catch-up to do.

If you remember Steven, I used my garage (which "never freezes") to attempt overwintering my Isabella brug this past winter and just letting it die back as it wanted. Well, it did very well until around the beginning of March - when the garage actually froze and stayed that way for about a week. I lost the poor girl so I'm starting new again :-(

I'll try to remember to take photos of the sanguineas this weekend and get them posted.

--Ginny

(Zone 6a)

Ooh, I'm sorry to hear about Isabella, it's so frustrating when those things happen, especially when you've managed to get it through the whole winter. It's good to hear the sanguineas are doing well!!! I can only imagine how amazing they'll be for you when they bloom!
I hear you on the spidermites, I'm trying to fend the nasty things off one of my passion flowers......nasty little things!!!

I'd love to see some photos when you get them and maybe when our brugs get bigger we could do a cutting swap :D hehehe

Happy Gardening!
Steven

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Ginny, did you put in an order at Brugmansia Quebec? I did, and got my order today. Asked for 2 cuttings and got 4, about 3-6" of Sanguinea and asked for 2 and got 2 cuttings but were bigger Charles G about 8'' . They were green cutting with leaves, no roots, which I had asked. they were packaged in little ziplock bags with rock wool. The plants seem to be very healthy. I also ordered Iochroma Australis, got bare root plant, very big size for $16. Kind of bend a bit to make it fit in package, but it'll be alright, lots of leaves. All well packaged in newspaper and cereal box.
I got a first ever bloom for me, on a white noid, Just finishing opening up today. Very happy to see that. Another one is opening, and lots of small buds are forming. Not a lot of leaves though yet. But Summer isn't over.
Here's a pic of it.

A Brug cutting swap when our plants get biggere sounds good to me Steven.

Hi Burn - Congratulations on your first Brug bloom! Isn't it exciting?

I've just been in contact with Brugmansia-Quebec via email and am only waiting for clarification on a couple of things before I place my order - probably within the next couple of days. Did you order on their web site using PayPal or send them a money order?

They were very generous with you weren't they? Did you create an entry for them in Garden Watchdog yet?

I'll keep you posted on how it turns out for me.

--Ginny

(Zone 6a)

hehehe, I'm looking forward to the swap already! Plus, I just ordered some brug seeds from the DG Marketplace!!!
Heres the link if you want to check them out, theres a bunch of other crosses too!!! http://davesgarden.com/products/market/view/682/

Now you just stop that Steven! Tempting me is cruel when I still have to finish my landscaping project :-)

--Ginny

(Zone 6a)

Sorry ,I can't help it :) How is your landscaping coming so far?
I just wish the brug I had now would bloom! The anticipation is kiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllllllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnngggggggg meeeee!!!!

Burn - that's such a pretty brug you have! I love the white ones :)Well........I love all of them! I think I'm addicted!

Steven

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

I haven't been able to get anything done on the landscaping for the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, if we don't get completely rained out, I'll get a bunch more done Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Today was household chores and grocery shopping day.

I'll think of tons of huge brug blooms for you!

--Ginny

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Love the idea about a swap. My cuttings grew masses of roots over the winter in plain water with a little H2O2 topped up once a month, no care at all, in my basement. They were about 16" long, and had little light, but not freezing temps (about 16C).

I'd love to get a CG and a white. Mine are all pink, which is great, but variety is good. Let's keep talking.

(Zone 6a)

Ginny, today was cleaning day for me aswell.....my bathroom looked so good I was almost afraid to use it :) I also checked out your garden diary!!! Your beds look so good, really like the contrasting colours of mulch you used to denote different areas!

Andy, I'm wanting a white too :) I've had my eye on B. arborea for a while.......So far I only have one brug though and it's going to be pink. I did order some seeds from the DGmarket place, the link is a few posts up if you want to see...................I can't wait till they arrive!

Steven

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the kind words Steven. I'm very pleased with the way it is turning out so far. Makes all that work worthwhile.

Well I completed my order with Brugmansia-Quebec today. I ordered

=> Candida F. Pleno Pink Perfektion
=> Sauveolens Charles Grimaldi
=> Versicolor Peche (called Fishing Versicolor on their main web page)
=> and 1 litre of Neem Oil

I can't wait to get these lovely plants.

Yes, for sure let's keep talking about a swap. This will be very exciting too :-)

Here's some photos of my red brugs. This is the biggest one. The leaves are not as yellow as the pic makes it look by the way :-)

This guy has a crooked trunk. You can't see that very well in the photo.

This is the third of the larger ones. They're starting to recover nicely from the spider mite and fungus gnat infestations they suffered.
