When i got gas the other day, a man was writing down everyone's plate number. First i figured he was doing so in case someone skipped out without paying, but I prepaid before filling, and he still wrote down my plate number. Anyone have a clue why?
Noted license plate
? in my humble opinion, behavior as strange as that, would warrant a phone call to the local constable, sheriff, public safety office etc. more so if you were accompanied by young children. If someone was writing down my plate number - you can be assured I would have theirs written down, or at least a really good description.
Sad too say, there is no way to be "to cautious" in this world.
Was he associated with the store, or just a random person? It is strange. Was this station near a border between states or counties?
Since most stations have security cameras that take pictures of plates in case of drive offs (sometimes with the hose still attatched to the car) it seems odd for anyone to be writing down plate numbers.
I would go back and ask the station manager about it. If they did not have this done then you need to see if they documented or noticed the person doing it.
IF you are contacted by anyone saying your car was involved in a mishap the information from the station could help you prove it to be a scam artist at work and prevent you from some very large legal fees to fight it or having to argue with insurance companies to prove your innocence.
That's what I was thinking too. Someone who plans to claim that he saw you speeding away after causing damage in an accident. Unless you are on a border in an area where perhaps alchohol or cigarettes are not taxed.
Was this person doing this openly and conspicuously? Did others notice or just you? If he was being flashy about it he may have thought he was deterring drive offs. If he is a scammer planning to claim an accident, he may have wanted to have a description of the driver. Otherwise, plate numbers alone could be obtained in a parking lot with a lower chance of detection.
Was this a station of a major chain or an independent? If a big company you could also call corporate after calling the police.
You should research what information someone can find in your state with just your license plate no.
Definitely call the police and give them the time you were there and a description of the notetaker. They are in the better position to get the surveillance video of the person doing this (if some exists).
I know someone who got caught up in a scam by a staged accident ring and it wasn't pretty. (They intentionally caused an accident and then sued.)
Very interesting views. I sure wish I would have taken the time that day to find out what they were doing. So now the station owner not only has my name, and visa number, but my license number and suppose my address from the visa; that really is alot of info.
I was on a vacation from CA, this was at an Exxon station in Whitehall MT. on 6/15. The guy was dressed in a "garage shirt" with an emblem, and had a clip board, so it was authorized by the station. In fact the guy opened the door to the station for me as I walked up to go inside. THAT my friends, should have raised my suspicions at the get go!
I'll see what I can find out about it from Exxon..keep ya posted.

I received a reply from Exxon today saying that even though it was an Exxon Station that I visited; it's independantly owned and they don't have controll over the operations at that station.
Still waiting to hear from the Station.
