Can't buy a 1 year membership for a friend????

I just tried to purchase a 1 year membership for someone and I got a message stating they are subscribed though 2008 and to try back closer to that date? Why can't I buy the sub???

I have the system set so that you can't purchase subscriptions way out into the future. If someone already has a subscription for a year, the system will stop you from subscribing them even further.
