Suggestion for Plant Files w/o pictures

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I was shopping online tonight, and ran across a nice feature on one retailer's website that I thought might be a nice addition for Plant Files entries that don't have any pictures yet. Next to the name of the plant in their catalog, if they don't have a picture of the plant, there's a direct link to the Google Images results for that plant. I know the way I use Plant Files, I look there first but then if there's not a picture there I open another web browser window and go to Google images and type in the name of the plant, it would be so great to just click a button in DG and have it take me right to the search results for pics of that plant. I'm sure Google charges for the privilege of including this in the website so I don't know if it would be cost effective or not, but I thought it was really cool. Here's an example from the website I was on:

Who's buying? (or paying) lol

Nice idea, a real time saver.

I think you should not be allowed to make an entry into Plant Piles unless you have a photo-to prove the plant exists.

I dunno about that. What I do know is that I really detest creating entries and love it when I stumble upon a plant that I took a photo of that has a PlantFile entry with no photo. It makes my day NOT to have to go on line looking up oddball plants trying to fill in as many details as I possibly can. In just the past day, I added at least two but maybe three photos to PlantFile entries that had no photos.

Maybe people like me should pair up with people who like to create entries.

Pssst, loved your Lupinus diffusus!

I don't think you ought to wait until you have a picture to enter the plant, you can get lots of perfectly good information from PF even without a picture (and if Dave can implement this feature, then you could still see pictures easily even if nobody's entered one). It's obviously nicer to have one, and I try to put one in on my entries whenever I can, but I think it's better to have the info and then figure someone will come along later with a picture. What drives me nuts is when people don't enter any info whatsoever beyond the name of the plant, that's what ought to be banned.

Hey ecrane, I added the 'Oceana Blue' you identified!

Cool! That was a gorgeous pic!

Was that your native Salvia cultivar entry? If so, maybe we better get together. I'll show you photos I have with no entries and you create the entry. I really don't like creating a new entry particularly when it is for a plant with which I have little or no experience. It takes soooooooooooooo long searching the Internet for reliable information that it frustrates me so I am sitting on a boat load of plant photos right now that do not have entries. I thought I would have time to get to it this past winter but with a new job and all... well, you know how it goes.

No, I didn't enter that one. Actually I never heard of that cultivar until you posted it on the ID forum. I've grown other Salvia patens cultivars though (I don't think I've entered too many salvias at all into PF, most of the ones I have were already in there).

I'd be happy to help you with making entries...once I get through my own backlog! I don't mind at all doing the research, but it does take time and things have been too busy lately so I know exactly how it goes! My goal is to make entries eventually for all the plants that I have in my garden, plus anything that I take pics of at botanical gardens, etc. I figure we'll have a heat wave or two this summer and if they hit over a weekend then I may be able to get caught up. I'll let you know if I do!

Uh oh, shall we make it a date to join forces in the year 2020?

Sounds like a plan! Seriously though, if I get done sooner than that I'll let you know, especially if the plants you have pics of are ones where I'm either familiar with the genus or they're common in the trade it really wouldn't take that long for me to make the entries--it's my weird things that I photograph at botanical gardens that can be a little harder to track down info on sometimes!

Speaking of weird things posted from Botanical Gardens and such, look for an entry that is in my queue for a Dracontium gigas. That's a wild looking plant.

Is that the other one you had on the ID forum today? That was a crazy looking one!

Yup, and I figured I better quick fast create an entry for it before I forgot the information.
