Haves, wants for spring swap II

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I appreciate your observation. I've been studying Italian for about 3 to 4 years now. It's very frustrating at my age. And since I found this site, I'm afraid my homework slipped quite a bit :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

miatablu have you watched Life is Beautiful? it was in italian and subtitlted. Maybe fun practice for you. Or just an awesome movie, IMO. Your azalea is like right from a nursery. It's only staying out of the ground while I take care of more urgent items.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter - my father worked for NASA, and designed life support equipment that was used on the first flight to the moon (69).

I met all the astronauts (he would invite them over for dinner) but at that age I did not even realize who I was meeting.

I think I will stay here and try to make this earth a better place to be comfortable in. Join me! We will make a difference.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

My moon? Yes it do! I ain't worried nohow, as it has one of dem twisty bulbs in it. I don't have no time to wash dat moon. It would shine a lot sweller if I did.

As usual, I got no time for nothing right now. Have a "lookie see" appt. at my Docs to see how the knee is doing. When I gets home, I gotta start straightening da house. I ain't done nothing yet and my BIG Cookout is on the 23rd.

Jill--Actually, Baltimore is pronounced "Bawlmer" here. You were close. And you know that park where the zoo is? (Druid Hill Park)? Here we just call it "Droodle" Park. In the City we walk on "Payments" and people go get their books at the "libery". People wash their dishes in the "zink" and Christmas comes in "Dezember". etc...etc....

There is a small, fun book out called "Bawlmerese"--or something like that. I wonder what would come up if one googled "Bawlmer"?

But--I ain't got no time now.

Catch Y'all later. Gita

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey Gita, seen the tagers at de zoo? Feel like I'm talking to a native, you do have a knack with languages :)

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, yes I did watch that movie. One of the best movies ever! So touching. A very, very funny movie also by him is Johnny Stecchino. I'm so glad you like the azalea. The spot where I was keeping it looked so bare when I came back from the swap. But it's such a good feeling to give it to someone who really appreciates it :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sorry -- messed up the transliteration! I do know the "right" way to pronounce it, LOL, I just can't spell it!

Pittsburgh has its own dialect too... most places do, but it just seems more pronounced in some areas!

"Jit yit?" (Did you eat yet?)

"Red up" (to tidy or clean... perhaps from "to make ready?")

"crick" for creek, "Gint Igle" for Giant Eagle (local grocery chain), etc...

I used to have a Pittsburghese shirt, too. Fun!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, do you live near Droodle Park? I ran the Celtic Solstice race there last year and had a blast. Maybe next year I'll run over to your house afterwards...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

critter - re Pittsburg - you forgot "Wooder" for water - ras-ling' for wrestling...ruf (like a dog's bark) in stead of roof - then of course pop instead of soda - supper instead of dinner...
And when in Phila it's "Yous-guys" instead of ya'll..... LOL

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm from upstate NY and in my family we grew up saying supper, cellar, couch, and my mother's sister is a tiny little insect... oh, and we know how to drive in snow. (sorry, I couldn't resist that one... ducking and running)

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Thats ok I'm from all over (including Alaska) and can drive on ICE. Yep gotta be patient but it can be done.

Lived in upstate NY (Seneca) for a few years, and NYC ( Gov. Island) for a few months
pretty area.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

RE: driving on ice... I lived in Sapporo, Japan for a year and a half on a lark in my 20's. My main mode of transportation was a mt. bike and, because they heat the city streets there rather than plowing them (well there's limited plowing), they become sheets of ice a couple inches thick. I learned to ride my mt. bike on sheer ice, so I can imagine that the same would apply to driving on it with a car. Rule #1 was to deflate the tires significantly. I only had one wipe out!

As for Seneca, I know the Finger Lakes well and miss them!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Don't "yuuns' get too humerous here with dialect or I may spit-take my baloney and cheese.
We as kids liked going to relatives in Wisconsin and asking them to say 'How now brown cow" and them with us back "Haow naow braown caow"

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, I think you're the one who went home with a trio of red-burgandy plants that didn't have a name (I split a 6-pack in half, and your half was missing its label)... It's an Amaranthus, probably A. lividus.... it'll get about 3 feet tall, insignificant blooms (not like love-lies-bleeding) but great foliage... it likes sun, and it's an annual, but it may reseed for you.

Did anybody else get "mystery" plants?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Wrightie,

NO! I do not live anywhere near "Droodle" park. I am in NE Baltimore County. I am a registered volunteer, though, at the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Druid Hill Park. WHAT A PLACE!!!! I just never have time to go there and help out.
We should all meet up one day and go there and walk through all the "Houses" and the "Palm Room" and gawk in the "Orchid Room". We could bring a picnic lunch and share it in the beautiful, outside gardens at one of the many picnic tables there. It will be memorable!!!!

I live 5 minutes from White Marsh Mall and also from I 95. Exit 67B--White Marsh Blvd/Rt. 43. D-mail me if you plant to come.

Dyson,

My sister lives in Alaska-- in Homer. Where were you? I have been there 3 times. Love it! She is an excellent tour guide and has had her share of visitors. She has a beautiful house on a hillside overlooking the bay and the mountains beyond. A fenced in veggie garden (to keep the Moose out) and a tiny Greenhouse so she can grow Tomatoes and start her Radishes and other seeds earlier.

Life sure is different there. Women hunt and fish and catch salmon in the AM and cook it for dinner that same night. Even the kids do it. YUM! They ride snowmobiles in the winter to get around, even though most people there drive Subaru Outbacks--same car I own. It is NOT as frigid in Homer as most people perceive AK to be. It is on the water and summers there can be downright hot.

Sally,

I got home in 30-40 minutes from your house. We are NOT all that far apart! Wrightie and me and you could meet up at your place someday.

You know what? This "Haves and Wants" Thread seems to be taking on a different angle--a more interesting one. I like it! How about the rest of you? Less "greedy" and more "educational".

Well--shut my mouth! Gita

Here's one of my favorite blooming plants to have in beds and containers. The Heliotrope. LOVE that blue!!!! And--OH, the fragrance!!!!

Edited to remove specific directions to my house. Thanks for the heads up Chantel.

I don't think I started my heliotrope seeds early enough... next year, I am sowing some at the end of January! I've been resisting buying a blooming plant because I know I have a dozen plants at home... but mine are't blooming yet, boohoohoo. However, my potted jasmine is blooming away next to the back door, and its fragrance is just luscious!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter,

I bought my Heliotrope. I did not grow it from seed, but I did find a nursery that had it in a 6-pack. Great deal! $2 for the 6-pack versus $3 for one plant as a premium annual.

G..

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

critter - you gave me some of those pretties...that would be wonderful if they reseeded!! So pretty!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That is a great deal! I've seen them going for even more in a 4 inch pot... that's why I figured that (like "wave" petunias) they'd be worth trying to grow from seed.

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - I was in Ketchikan, AK, my sister lives in Cordova, AK She shot a moose a few years back but that really is another story altogether.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Did someone say, "Beer and wine?"...

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Reminds me... If you happen to take a gander at my pic's on my other thread here, you should bare in mind that I've been known to Garden-with-a-Glass-O-Wine in my other hand. That should 'splain a couple things...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita,
Is that persian shield growing to the left? Very pretty color combination!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Critter, That is what happened to my Pansies. They germinated great and Ric planted about 50 of them but they were so late that they are just now blooming. My Heliotrope seeds didn't germinate but the seeds came from someone else and theirs didn't germinate either.
Here is a shot of my "summer" blooming pansies. LOL

Chantel,

Yes, that is Persian Shield--a plant I have fallen in love with. I always have that in the center of my blue/purple planter pot.

I went to Maryland Flower and Foliage this year to buy most of my plants. They are wholesale growers, but anyone can shop there.
Well, in one of their Greenhouses where they had all the fancier stuff and the 6' plants, there was a row the length of the Greenhouse of Persian Shields. Everything there was $2.50. I love that plant!
I have a picture of it from last year--now I have to go hunting for it--since you mentioned it.....

I have fallen in love with it also, but I need more plants to complement it in its' container. It's very lonely right now.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

critter- yes i meant to ask about that Amaranth. I got the Amaranth part but had no clue on height . THX I am lovin' the several items I got with purple/maroon foliage.

I live about equal distance between Gita and wrightie, probably. more or less. For a general idea- From Bowie, head over to 301, go north thru Crofton and a bout five minutes later ,, right after Severna Park will be a WA WA- thats the turn, you're almost there. Always open for garden tours! Pardon Our Dust!! This is the current view from my back deck. Maybe if I cover it in liriope...........

Uh Oh. Sounds like you're going to have visitors.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, I forgot to ask. What's the project?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I brought several hosta to the swap:
--> Krossa Regal (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/3199/),
--> Golden Tiara (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2942/),
--> Ginko Craig (http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/3154/index.html -- a great edger), and
--> one I couldn't remember the name of.

So if I gave you an unidentified hosta, for your records I can now say I'm fairly sure that last one was Gold Standard -- see http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/browseproducts/Hosta-Gold-Standard.html. The pictures in DG aren't quite as clear -- see http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/3158/index.html.

I'm guessing Gold Standard changes its appearance a lot based on how much sun it gets. It is very good at lighting up a deep shady spot.

Mom's hostas all look happy! She's going to be thrilled with the selection I have for her... and she's going to be so surprised that I've acquired a few more from my DG friends! They're on a little tour in Europe, due back in a couple of days, and then we'll head down to see them at the end of next week. Gah! I just realized how many plants the neigbor's girls will have to water for me while I'm gone... I'd better pay well, LOL...

I've been planting out in my garden beds, potting starts in flats, and planting some more containers... I found a cool stacking container that I'd almost forgotten about, planted up the top and bottom "pockets," then realized I desperately needed 3 nasturtiums for the middle tier.

With all those plants covering my deck, I don't know how I could lack something suitable, LOL, but once I had the thought I was just stuck on the idea of nasturtiums. I was in Brunswick, on my way to a friend's house (to demo my little Mantis for her and pick up some fresh cut grass for mulching my tomato plants)... so I stopped at the little nursery and produce market that's on the way... and Bobbie was there! We chatted while we browsed, and I was sad that they didn't have any nasturtiums until -- Ta Dah! -- Bobbie said, "oh! I have a couple of nasturtiums that you can have! I'll bring them by tomorrow!" WOW! :-) So, not only did I get a lovely little trio of nasturtiums for my planter, I also got to have lunch with Bobbie today! Thanks, Bobbie!!

wrightie- that's a temporary pile of leftover excavation dirt from our new bedroom addition. Or biggest sandbos my kids have ever seen. Or a mini Mt Suribachi. After pinching pennies for years and doing hardly the first thing to maintain much less improve this dive, we bit the proverbial bullet. Best part- having brand new edges to plant! I will seriously need help designing planting scheme on that side.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Sallyg, please hit Send just one more time.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, Wrightie -- "that's a temporary pile of leftover excavation dirt from our new bedroom addition. Or biggest sandbos my kids have ever seen. Or a mini Mt Suribachi. After pinching pennies for years and doing hardly the first thing to maintain much less improve this dive, we bit the proverbial bullet. Best part- having brand new edges to plant! I will seriously need help designing planting scheme on that side."

LOL

Oh, hear the echo.... echo..... echo.....

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wrightie- I hope you see I fixed it!! I was just so darn witty I had to keep sending it.
I was frazzled by my 82 updated threads- did somebody else get that too? I thought they would fix it, but it hasn't gone away yet.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, Dratz. I was hoping that you'd keep them up.

Yes, I think everyone experienced that today. I went over to the DG forum this morning to see what was up; one of the main databases/server's crashed and ... we ended up with all of the false messages. Unfortunately, to clear it, you'll have to go in and click on each one of your 82 threads... Enjoy!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, there's a thread over in the DG forum about that... Dave says it's a one time glitch, but the only way to get the threads off your home page is to click on them... You don't have to "unwatch them" or even let them come all the way up... just go down the list and click with a little half-second pause between so it starts loading... when you refresh your home page, the thread should then have disappeared.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ah, thanks w and c

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

And I thought they were just giving me a hint to clean out some old threads in my watcher.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Jill, your so welcome for the nasturtiums. When you said you needed some when we bumped into each other in Brunswick, I heard a little Mighty Mouse voice in the back of my head "Hear I Come To Save The Day!!!". At least I didn't embarrass you there and do the Andy Kaufmann gestures. I enjoyed lunch too, and you guys believe it or not, we actually talked about something other than plants. It was about cooking, which was started by talking the basil at the Vietnamese restaurant, which of course, eventually brought us right back around to talking plants. And I swore to my husband, when I took the nasturtiums to Jill (plus a few other different plants of course) that I would not be bringing anything back. I had just finished swapping plants at the swap and was not going to get more. Well, thanks for the torenia Jill :-/
