Why the "Other Dave's Garden Threads you might ..."

Why are we suddenly seeing a list of threads at the bottom of each thread - "Other Dave's Garden Threads you might be interested in:" ? And how are they selected - randomly from the forum?

At the bottom of one thread there were other threads that didn't seem to be particularly related to the thread in question and for some of them, the last post was as long ago as 2001. Unless the topic is directly related to the thread at hand, I don't see any real benefit to these referrals.
