Good heavens! Would you describe that as a carpet, a sea, a lake, or what?

Central, WI(Zone 4b)

Wow!!! That is gorgeous! How long did it take you to plant all them?

Northeast Harbor, ME

We call it a pool.

It took 3 people one week to do this. We applied Roundup to the area, laid down 3" of compost, the bulbs, 2 more inches of compost, and pine needle mulch. It was fun.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

How beautiful ~ but 15,000 would be overwhelming. Good work!

Central, WI(Zone 4b)

That is amazing! What zone are you in? How long does that bloom by you? Love the finishing touch of the green plant edging too! What are those?

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Gorgeous!

Where did you find that many for sale in one place?, ...and did it cost a small fortune?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Impressive.

Northeast Harbor, ME

We're in zone 5b. They bloomed for several week and the green planting edge is actually the foliage of the muscari that laid down.

The larger a quantity that one buys, the lower the price goes. We got our bulbs from Brent and Becky's Bulbs, a very reliable and high qulaity merchant.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I didn't realize they'd sell that many, lol...

That will be something to look forward to each and every year. What a statement! You will be remembered by it...

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

surely this beats some kind of Guiness world record!

Northeast Harbor, ME

I think that I'd have a long way to go before I can one up the people in Holland. You should see their bulbs. It's jaw dropping.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Water, what does the area look like after they're done blooming? Do you have some other attraction for the rest of the year?

xxx, Carrie

Northeast Harbor, ME

It'll just be covered over by pine needles. This area is located in back of the pool house so it's not somewhere that's highly visible. Most of the year, your eye never goes there. But in the spring, your eye can't miss that much blue :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

That is gorgeous!

Did you bother setting them right side up, or did you just sort of toss thm out and assume they'd find their way up?

Suzy

P.S. Did they give you a deal on the price? 100/$19.00 seems pretty steep.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

So impressive!! You have to give us more details and updates on your sea of blue.

Which muscari did you purchase for this project? For instance, are you going to feed them with some kind of fertilizer high in P and K?

And which kind of muscari did you purchase for this project?

Northeast Harbor, ME

Illoquin, we did set them up right and, though I can't remember the price, it came in very low because of the bulk. Much less than $19./100.

We used M. armeniacum and I don't think we'll fertilize. I suspect they'll abe just fiine as they are. Next srping, I'll probably feed them something fairly balanced.

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

Absolutely Beautiful!
How much sun do they get each day?

chris

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Youch! Setting each one of those puppies right side up is a of of work! I was hoping a person could just throw them out like birdseed, cover them, and have that gorgeous river the next spring. Guess I was dreaming.

Suzy

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

At least now my DH believes in grape hyacinth! Thanks for that.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I showed Mr. Clean and he thinks it was photoshopped. LOL.

Suzy

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!

Northeast Harbor, ME

I defy this "Mr. Clean" to tell me that to my face!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL!

I htink I had him convinced they were for real, but I am also pretty sure he thinks you are Martha Stewart with a staff of dozens. He's out of town this week, but I can't wait to tell him you and your dh personally placed every bulb right side up and evenly spaced them!

Suzy

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Did you send one of those pictures to B & B? When I have huge success like that, I like to let the vendors see too.

xx, Carrie

Northeast Harbor, ME

Well, this isn't Martha Stewart's property but it is in the same town that she summers in and it is on an estate w/ 13 people on the outside staff. I'm the head gardener.

B & B came to see it in person.......... Sweet!!!

Peachtree City, GA(Zone 7b)

watersedge,

Do they get any sun? Morning or afternoon? How long?

I have 100 comming in fall, it wont be anywhere near as impressive as your show. I was dreading planting 100 but after hearing your 15,000, mine doesnt sound so bad anymore. :)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Carrie, Totally awesome sea of muscari. You even got a big, "WOW" from my DH. Do send a picture to B&B. I was having an email conversation with Becky about their plastic green labels recently and I sent her photo collages of some of the blooms that I had from their bulbs this spring. She asked if she could post them in their customer gallery. I am very happy to see some of my garden on their web site. She couldn't be nicer and aside from being a very helpful vendor, she is very enthusiastic about her customers efforts. Yours is amazing. She would be thrilled to see your sea. Patti

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Patti, B&B have already visited this one personally. I shan't be far behind ifn I can help it!

Northeast Harbor, ME

The bulb display is open to the public on the weekend of and before Memorial Day. We have a benefit tour for local non profits every year. I'm just beginning to design next year's display now.

Any reccoommendations for smashing tulip/ bulb combinations? I'd like to do something really nice w/Leucojum this year.

Fort Myers, FL(Zone 10a)

so that is how you get to meet B&B! lol buy 15000 bulbs plant water .. and show! That is a awesome Idea! I Love it.. I could replace my lawn for the spring in the very front of the yard!

these would make awesome borders!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I am going to plant a modest # of Leucojum with 'Deirdre' this fall. Here she is with our friend , Clarence. Patti

This is another one that I loved as it has so diverse and starts out a pale yellow with white and ends up with a glowing pinkish orange with a bit of yellow. It is late and is 'Antoinette' Patti

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

Tulip 'Antoinette' is one of my favorites, too. The color change reminds me of a ripening peach.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Another late one ( I assume you need late) that performed great and is very late is 'Omnyacc'. I till have not cut it down as the form is still lovely even with no petals! It is nothing short of dramatic. Patti

Patti, these are wild tulips. My boss liked thyem both too and insists that we get them. Do you know where they come from?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Sure, Brent and Becky has them. Here are some other that were still in bloom on Memorial Day.

'Flaming Spring Green' 2 pictures of this elegant gal. Maybe my favorite.
'Flaming Parrot' 2 pictures It went from yellow to white, but never got muddy.
'Orange Favorite' 2 pictures of this wild orange & a touch of green that is almost too bright
'Estella Rijnveld' 2 pictures, she had a long run and was surprisingly sturdy. Rather bold
'Eyecatcher' 1 picture. I can't find it this year and we loved it. It opened on May 7 and was still looking good at the end of May.

We have a dear friend who's family has had a summer home in NE Harbor for years, but she doesn't go up until later in the season, and sadly, her mom died this winter ,so who knows when she will go. But we have been up there often in May as we love Me best out of season. I was in Prout's Neck last week, so maybe next year I can get DH to plan a Memorial day trip that includes your garden. We could hit Surry gardens on the way. I love the walk up to Thuya Gardens ( view is spectacularly ). I like that little garden across from the Asticou Inn, too. My dogs favorite place is the walk to the Rockerfeller boathouse on Little Long Pond. My DH likes it over in SW Harbor as he owned the Nantucket Boatyard for years, so he loves going down to Hinckley. So we will be tempted by your open garden come next spring. Patti

watersedge, maybe do a white/green theme w/pale lavender accents? that's one of my favorite schemes.

along with patti's striped green tulip & the leucojum, there's allium karatviense Ivory Queen & A. mulbibulbosum.

i get all my bulbs from van engelen, which is john scheepers' wholesale division (using scheepers color catalog for the pix, of course).

they have a new emperor tulip called exotic emperor, which is fragrant & white w/green flames.

other green/white tulips: spring green & white parrot, cardinal mindszenty

Snow parrot has very pale French blue flames at the base. Tulipa humilis alba coerulea oculata is white with purple inside.

For crocus I've used Prince Clause & Blue Pearl.

Others: Fritillaria pontica, acmopetla & meleagris alba. Narcissi Sinopel. Allium 'Hair."

I find flowers in this color range to extend the season till fall, but you get my drift.

Sure would like to see this carried out on the grand scale that you can do rather than the dribs & drabs that inhabit MY borders!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

P.S.: I use plants whose blooms will be white but whose buds are light green, like datura & whatever variety of shasta daisy I have.

And who doesn't love Zinnia "Envy"?

Tell me you have no intention of EVER doing a border in these colors & I'll shut up. But greenish flower hues are a bit hit with visitors to my garden!

Fort Myers, FL(Zone 10a)

well all you tulips ppl *razz* at ya
I can't grow them here is SW Fl :(

but I can grow Sunflowers big time!
