Early Summer bulbs
jmorth, surely you don't live in the same Illinois I live in. Your Illinois is the most gorgeous and exotic place. What beautiful things you grow!
thanks wickerparker
Hey, Jmorth--I just posted my blackberry lilies in the 'Full Swing" thread. Yours look different!! Hmm. I thought mine were blackberries since they have the black "berries" cradled on each leaf of their tall stalk. They have black "freckles" on the petals. They just turned up in the yard a few years ago, probably a gift from Hurricane Isabelle. There's two--side by side! Twin towers. Really eye-catching.
Foxfirefly,
Yours looks like a tiger lily and they produce bulbils in the leaf axils that are actually purple-black mini bulbs. Nice gift from Isabelle.
Ooooh! Tuberoses .... can you take a photo of the entire plant? I have three that are growing in pots. I am not sure where to plant them. Do yours grow in full sun or partial shade?
I also didn't know 4 O'Clocks came in white blooms. I have yellow and also magenta colored blooms. How pretty! Wanna trade some seeds of the Four O'Clocks?
Thanks, Jmorth! I learn something everyday! That is a great picture of "Blackberry Lily" and the first time I have actually seen it when it looks like its namesake.
The tuberoses have been in these pots for years, each year one to four flowering scapes appear. Pots are on medium height plant stands. They are over-wintered in same pot in basement.
Some references recommend discarding them after they flower. It may be that that particular tuber's flowering scape will bloom but once but by the next year, an adjacent tuber produces a new stalk to flower.
Forgot to respond to your second query: the pots are grown pretty much in full sun.

Thanks, jmorth! Those tuberosa are gorgeous. Now I know what to do with my three. I will pot them up as well. Mine get sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon, so will move them out to more sun. Hopefully, that will help them bloom! I love yours! So nice! Thanks for posting the photos! :-)
jmorth - do you notice a diminished bloom on the tuberoses? I grew 5 tuberose bulbs in a 14" diameter pot and they bloomed so nicely the first year. Overwintered in the pots in the cellar. Now they are just leaves and no blooms yet. I think by this time last year they were blooming. So you don't have to divide them?
Sue
Sue,
Admittedly, the 1st year probably is oft the best but I'm content if each of my two pots throw up one flowering scape apiece. The tuberoses pictured have been in their present pots now for several years and have about outgrown their abodes. Before being placed outside in the spring I try to refresh the soil by loosening the soil on top and dumping it and then replacing that with fresh potting mix. During the growing season I fertilize them fairly often.

Wow! I am new to this thread, but enjoying all the beautiful pictures! I have gotten my first surprise lilies this year. They have been spectacular and look just like the ones you captured so wonderfully jmorth.
I also have both blackberry lilies, a gift from rebecca30, and tiger lilies sort of like yours fox. Mine are the doubles though...Florapleno, I believe. They are usually so lovely, but are competing with some wild cannas this year...Gotta thin the canna!

Also have had great luck with pineapple lilies 'Sparkling Burgandy' and the new dwarf in my garden, vandermerii.

Pole-Evansii measures 49" tall X 15" wide. The flowering portion of the scape is 20".
The leaves, held fairly rigidly are 7" wide X 33" long.
This picture is from today.
The Eucomis in the foreground peaked out at 22" tall.
The smaller Eucomis have leaves 4" wide and 20" long.
The greater Eucomis is in it's third year. The Lesser I've had around for many years.
Great, Jmorth!! All our lilies finished in July!! Thanks for posting!
Very pretty, mgarr...Wonder if you'd get arrested digging one up? What we all want to know is, 'Will it spread all over?' Next question would be, 'If not terribly, would you send us one??' LOL. Plant people, what are you gonna do?
Gosh, I haven't been to Wilkes Barre in years. Had quite an adventure when we had car trouble there a few years ago...Let's just say that I wouldn't judge all of Wilkes Barreians (??) by the few we met that day! Whew!
Nice photography on you picture!
Bev
It was in the woods going up route 29 to Moon Lake Park where I work. Believe me I'm watching to see when the seeds are ripe. I'll share if they amount to anything.
