Hi,
I know that I can actually choose which forums I have on my home page and I used to only keep the forums on my home page that I watched all the time. But then I noticed I was always having to go back in and look for and check a forum when something came up that I wanted to look for. So I finally gave in and now keep ALL the forums on my home page but geesh, that is a pretty long list to look through when I just want to check my regular ones. So my question is, is there a way to have all the forums on my home page but maybe tag certain ones so they stay up on the top of the lists regardless of their last post date? Maybe like give us the ability to "sticky" certain forums?
Hope that makes sense to someone besides me. lol
thanks
Donna
question/suggestion regarding home page forums
That would be pretty cool, I have a fairly large group of forums on my home page (not all of them, only about 70 or so), but there are some that I read much less frequently than others, I always hit my "regular" forums first, then if I have time and have run out of posts on the ones I go to all the time I'll look at some of the others, but I agree it would be nice to have my regular forums stickied so they're always on top, but still have the others that I go to occasionally be on the home page for when I have extra time.
I notice some topics begin with the latest post and some topics begin with the last post. I prefer the former which means the regular posters don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom. Can this format be used for all topics?
I'm confused--are you talking about the order of posts in threads? Or the order of the threads within a forum? Either way all the forums are the same, within a forum you'll always see the thread with the most recent post at the top of the list, and within a thread the original post always is at the top and the most recent reply is always at the bottom. If you've been to the thread before and you just want to see the new responses, click on the Skip To New link at the top of the thread and it'll take you right to the one you haven't seen yet.
Donna, do you have the list of "most recent posts" on your home page? I find that has helped me dramatically reduce the number of "must-watch" forums in my favorites list, since I can get a pretty good idea of what 's going on at any given moment in other forums.
kyjoy, what think you may be referring to is that in your "watched threads" (not forums) list, the order the threads appear is based on the age of the thread. So if you start watching an older thread (or an older thread on your list gets a new post), it reappears, and suddenly it is higher in the list than a newer thread on your list.
The "favorite forums" list is based on activity - whatever forum has had the most recent post bounces to the top of your list.
Perhaps I am not using the right terminology because I am not referring to the "Favorites Forum" which is listed at the beginning.
I am instead referring to the arrangement of the "Forums" as opposed to the "Subforums," categories, headings, whatever they are called. I prefer the dating arrangement of the "Forums" which begin with the most recent as opposed to the "Subforums" which begin with the initial posting. Is possible to change the dating arrangement of the latter arrangement of dates to the former style? That's all I'm asking.
Hmmm....We need to all have the same vocabulary to be able to help.
By 'Forums' are you referring to the basic headers such as 'Daylilies', 'Tomatoes', 'Herbs' and such?
If by 'subforums' are you meaning the threads or topics that appear when you click on the forum title?
Such as...Daylilies..you click this Forum title and you get a list of conversations about various topics related to Daylilies
You enter the forum, and a list of topics or 'threads' come up. The one that has the most recent post will be at the top. If you have not visited that thread since a new post was made, a 'yes' will appear there..if you have been there, a 'no' will appear. Threads are always listed in the order of the most recent post. That can't be changed.
Within that forum there is a thread or topic that is titled..'What is blooming June 2'
You click on that and you can choose to read the whole conversation, or skip to the newest post. Simply click the 'skip to new' at the top of the page and you will be taken to the first post within that thread that you have not yet read.
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but don't hesitate to keep trying to make us understand.....if what you want is possible, we'd like to make your navigation of DG better for your needs.
I'm interpreting it the same way--I think subforums means the same thing that I would refer to as threads. I don't think it would make sense to arrange the posts within a thread from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. When someone comes to read that thread/topic/subforum/whatever you want to call it for the first time, it makes much more sense to start with the original post and then read down the posts in order so that you can follow the discussion. Just like you wouldn't read a page in a book from the bottom to the top, it doesn't make sense to read the discussion that way either. But Dave understands that you may not want to scroll through all the things you've already read to get to the new stuff, that's why he made the skip to new function, so you can go right to the first post that you haven't read yet and don't have to scroll through all the others.
If I were outlining Dave's Garden I would present the following:
A. Dave's Garden.
1. Beginning Gardner Questions Discussion, forum.
(Dates: Begin w/June 2 and present backward to Oct. 1)
a. My forsythia was massacred, subforum.
(Dates: Begin w/May 28 forward to June 2.)
If this doesn't explain my position, forget it. I'm worn out.
If I understand you correctly I would find that bewildering. I would hate to wade through a bunch of replies to get to the question. As it is if I am following a thread and know the original question, I just hit skip to new for the latest reply. But if I step into a thread and the latest reply is first I would have to go the bottom and read back up to make any sense to the thread.
Ahh, I think Farmerdill hit it on the head. Within any given thread, it is presented in chronological order - first post to last. And that is for the reason he mentioned - if you're reading a thread (especially the first time), having to scroll to the bottom then move your cursor up to read each subsequent post would be contrary to how English is written and read (left to right, top to bottom.)
Something that is very helpful is the "skip to new" link near the top. If it's a thread you've read already, that will zip you right to where you left off.
Thanks. I didn't know about the "Skip" feature. I will utilize it from now on.
I would like to see a listed of Watched Forums that could be broken into two types. One that is the forums I read daily and the other for forums in which I have high interest but don't necessarily read regularly.
For example, I try to read my Central Midwest, Coops, Classifieds, Plant Trading, and Daves Garden forum daily. But the Daylily, Dahlia, Lily, Journal & Diaries, Perennials, Bulbs, and multitudes of other forums I don't read every day. It would be nice to see my "must reads" at the top and my "interests" as a 2nd grouping.
