Good for you Ghia, this thread is a must!
Sadly I don't yet have mango, it looks to have a violet flush, lovely!
Yours looks very healthy jmorth, lovely whatever it is.
I have a few new ones this year, one I got from a supermarket was supposed to be Pink Persuasion but it looks like Z. rehmannii, possibly 'superba'. It has at least 7 flowers on, most now opening. This was a week ago with the first open,
Z. aeothipca 'Crowborough' I had in the ground a few years, but it dwindled to nearly nothing so I dug it and found many small bulbs. After at least 3 years in the greenhouse I have 3 pots with flowers in each, even the smallest ones are producing. Even though they came from the same tuber, all look to have different shape flowers.
They started 2 weeks ago,
I bought a ton of Calls from the Pacific Calla co op. Planted them right away. I see nothing. Should I see something? Shouldn't there be a sprout or something? Or do I have to wait until next year for any results?
I'm Depserate!
dwerland if you got them late they will take a little while longer to appear, I planted some late and they are just starting to show. They need to make roots and establish first, my rehmannii I started inside in January. The others, which I already had, started in growth in the greenhouse in March. Some are just making some spathes now.
Give them time, they will grow!
Thanks for the encouragment!
ghiagirl,
The Calla in pots are taken to basement to overwinter. I just leave them thus till the next spring. Before returned to the elements, I usually repot or top dress. I might dash the pot with water once or twice during their basement confinement, but basically they're stored dry. The pots used to grow them are 10 or 12 inches with styrofoam drainage.
I have never grown Calla. In zone 6 do I have to dig & store the bulbs in the winter.
ctindell, I left several callas in the ground last fall and all survived the winter just fine. Several people from this area (zone 6) had told me of similar experiences with them and that gave me the guts to try. Another DGr in zone 5 reported that hers have overwintered several years in a row in a protected courtyard.
The trube on Picasso looks very long, Vermeer is squat, very different!
My Majestic Red looks different this year, it started fairly light but has darkened, still a different burgundy to last year. The bright red comes later with a heavy pollen set as it did last year.
It has been in a hot greenhouse, that is when the sun has shone and the temps have been above 12C! Now it's outside, the tubes are creamy this year (so far) too. I wonder if the hot weather last year 'preformed' the colour for this year!
This is from two separate bulbs, which are from the one originally.
Very pretty ;o))
That is right very different looking.
It actually would be interesting if hot conditions has something to do with it. Seems as it does.
oh goody. I was hoping vermeer and picasso were indeed diff. My Picasso has been blooming like crazy, no action on Vermeer yet.
nice pics everyone.
Thanks Gemini_sage I appreciate that info. I will try one. They are so beautiful.
How odd, I've never seen one like that. Very pretty though.
