KatG, you have a beautiful place! Where did you find the stacked planter?
Container Renovations! (smile)
Jeanne...I think so too! I did talk to my staff because I feel kind of bad making it into something else, but they're like "Go for it". So maybe next weekend I'll fill it in. I get very hot afternoon sun out there so I'll probably plant those Home Depot Sunpatience...I still have some in the front (although very stalky) that I planted last April! They're really incredible and that's what I planted in those big urns and seem to be doing well.
Thanks Rene10:
I Love that stackable planter! I need to replant mine as it's a little out of control with the flowers, but I've had an unlimited supply of herbs such as parsley, rosemary, oregano and dill for about 8 months now. The basil comes and goes and I just throw in a plant about every 2 months. I put a little periwinkle in when there was nothing available that really flowers here and they've been non-stop blooms. It's a very pretty planter when you combine flower and herbs.
I bought this one at www.aracelystackers.com/
It's a great planter!
OMG! Garnerkett on another thread posted a photo of a planted head and it lead me to an obsessive hunt! hahaha
I finally found these on Ballard Design site and they are incredible. I had this very unusual plant I picked up somewhere called Rhiipsalis and it just kept growing like hair. Needed a head to make it beautiful!
I just LOVE these. I finally had time to get outside in my garden today to do some maintenance and planted these two! They just crack me up! I think they're hysterical!
Those are adorable! SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!! Good Job Kat! hahahahah
Jeanne...I need to name them!
From that side-view photo the first thing that comes to mind is Farah (shag haircut), and don't you think the male kind of reminds you of Woody Harrelson with dreadlocks??? (Cheers?) hahahahaha.
They are cute! You should name them! hahaha!
Had a great day in my garden today. I so miss it as I've been so busy with business lately My wonderful Man made a plan for us today to get out and work in my yard! it was so good. While he pruned and cut off dead stuff in the front yard, I worked in the back. I just needed to get things cleaned up before I renovate my pots. Next weekend we're going plant shopping!
I did buy a few plants this week though and planted a couple things...
I planted 2 of these at my front doors. It's very shady there and I'm hoping Impatience will love it. They look a little spindly right now, but I'm hoping it's a good choice.
This is quite a year for Florlda weather. We've had very little rain and it's been so hot that even Mother Nature has been fooled! My Caladiums are starting to pop out of the ground and that's not good as they're about 2 months premature.Things are growing, and they shouldn't be as this is our dormant season. I'm just crossing my fingers that we don't have another cold-snap.
Kat
Everything looks beautiful! Good Job!
Thanks Tex...
It's really getting chilly tonight - low 40's, but I's not going to be too bad. I didn't even cover my plants.
Hope you fare well though Rene...they're saying anything east of 1-75 might get some frost.
It really is funny living in Florida. When I lived up north and the temps dipped down into the 60's you would automatically have the heat on. Right now it's probably 45 and my home is so comfortable without any heat. .They say we have 2 days of this, and If it get's really cold tomorrow, I'll light my bedroom fireplace. Don't get a chance to use it to often, but when I do...it's heavenly!
I had such a great day today planting. I’ve been working so hard lately and really haven’t had much time to spend in my beautiful garden…How I miss this! My Dear Man who is a CPA is also stressing out. He spent all day pruning and he actually thanks me when he’s done! Haha.
Ahhh…I wish the days were longer. But, I still did manage to get a lot accomplished today. Don and I went to Home Depot yesterday and I bought out the store…Sometimes you go there and they have nothing. Just happened though that they just had the best! Took me under an hour to buy a truckload! There’s times that we have to do things like dress up and go out to restaurants or social things, but I love when we can enjoy a Saturday when we go to HD and stop at an outdoor restaurant and I have a birds-eye view on the truck! Nobody better mess with my Petunias! Haha.
I must have planted about ten pots today...but here's a few.
A combo of Bicopa, purple sheild, dolce-key lime, heurchera...
I finally did it! I filled in my fountain with dirt. Of course, the pump worked today and I really hated doing it but, I think I'll get so much more pleasure out of a planter!
It looks really sparse right now, but I planted it with Sunpatiens. I LOVE these flowers and they grow like crazy in full sun! I found them for the first time last year and had some that grew about 2 feet high (and full!) I actally still have some left after a year. Right now they're really hard to come by and Home Depot has exclusive rights on them. They had 2 flats left yesterday and I bought them both so I really didin't have a choice of color. Most impatiens is very short lived here in the heat, but these are amazing! I just can't wait until they spread out and grow!
I was really ready to renovate my stackable planter today...but just didn't have the heart to rip out everything that has been growing so well. Not only that...When I'm cooking, I just step out here and get an unlimited amount of parsley, oregano and rosemary! It's pretty unruly, but I like it a lot!
I've probably looked at this planter about 100 times and thought...I'm not buying it until it goes on Sale! haha. Well, Sunday, I broke down and ordered it. It's a little rustic for my decor, but I love it. It's nearly 5ft long by 2 feet deep! I think it;s going to be really cool planted with some spilling plants!
Great Job! Love the new planter! It's OK if some things become "unruly", some of the time! My banana trees are very unruly at the moment....as is the yard in general.... with part of it being tucked away in the makeshift greenhouses! The patio is "unruly" also!!!!!
A favorite scripture of mine is Ecclesiastes 3......"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." Also a popular song long ago.
Soon it will be Spring....eventually, hopefully, and we can get re-organized again!
Thanks Jeanne...
You're right...everything has it's season! Just not sure whether this season down here didn't start too soon! Mother Nature has been fooled here in Florida because it's been so warm. My Caladiums are poking up when they shouldn't be and things are blooming way too early! I guess this is okay if we don't get some surprise cold-front that comes in.
I just went back on "thread's I've started" and seen that there have been something like over 5200 views of this thread. That just astounds me. I am so new to container gardening so I have no expertise. I do have a fair idea on how to look after plants though and have had a lot of success with my containers. My advice to anybody wanting to experiment in container gardening is...Just do it! Just try differnt things and combinations. I do look at plantfiles to see how things are going to grow, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. Container gardening for me has been one of the most gratifying forms of gardening I could do.
It's so fun too when you find unusual planters. My three gals are doing great...
They sure are! We finally opened up the canopy and took the plastic down from the former "hut", put plants back out in the yard! It looks so much better. My grandson is here and tomorrow will help make a flower bed for some of the daylilies and cut back more banana trees. We have lots of projects on the list!
Have a great week!
Good for you Jeanne! It really is nice to have help and I'm sure it's just nice to spend some time with your Grandson. Enjoy!
I was at Sams Club last night and they had a great buy on Daylilies...I've just never planted them here, but I'm thinking if they take your climate, they might be good here too. Do you plant them in the Sun? They also had Hosta's which I love. I dug some up in Tennessee, but have never been able to get them to survive here. That's the thing about Sams...they're really not too conscious of zones. They had beautiful Clematis also...which I was so tempted to buy, but I just don't think it would make it. BUT...for $14.95, maybe I should just give it a try! I also got a brochure from Stokes tropicals today...I couldn't believe the different banana trees they had - some very colorful and different. They seem really overpriced though on some plants.
I got my faux bois planter a couple of days ago and can't wait to put it together and plant it this weekend. It is so cool! Haven't got a clue what I'm planting in it...but I'm sure I'll fill the back of Don's truck...again! hahaha. I've got to STOP!!! ahhhh...not really! LOL
My filled-in fountain is really starting to spread out and I have a lanai full of blooming flowers for Easter! LOVE IT!
You have a good one...
Kat
Wow!!!!! That looks terrific! It really came out nice!
How's your daybed doing out on th docks? Did you leave it out all winter?
Daylilies should do OK in your zone....except watch out for "Rust" when the temps get up there! We have to spray with a fungicide periodically.
The Daybed has been just fine...never even chained it down. It's so cumbersome, I can't imagine anybody stealing it. However, my neighbors Canoe was stolen off his dock the other day!
I had to take the canopy off though as it has been so windy and it's like a kite! haha. I looked out the other day and thought..."What on Earth?". The wind had actually picked it up and threw it back into the seawall! Yikes. I've got all the cushions tucked and so far, so good.
Thanks for the Daylilly tip...I think I'll plant some.
Kat
OMG! You're not going to believe this! I just bought a wireless router and I'm sitting here in the dark with my laptop and the fireplace going on the Lanai...It's pouring this beautiful steady rain that we need so badly. I had plans of getting out into my garden today but it's been steady rain. I Love it...although I have a truck-load of plants that we bought from Home-Depot last night!. The Garden girls at HD are like...are.you're back already? That was after my last truckfull! It's crazy, I just don't know where they all go. I also bought two amazing giant pots from Lowes! Don't know what I'm doing with them yet, but they are gorgeous!
