Really neat addition to Go Gardening

Terry and I worked together to produce a new way to access the information over at Gardens.com. You can now browse by type, state and city:

http://gardens.com/go/browse/gardencenters/

Click on a state and it'll then show you the major cities you can view. Also, courtesy of Terry, each state has a nice pretty flower picked from plantfiles, as well as a little paragraph intro about that state.

I was expecting really interesting results by combining city data and I was pleased to see it come together as well as I hoped. Example:

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

Cool! That must have taken a little work, nice job.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Looking mighty fine to me! Great feature!

Ya'll done good! Thanks! It just gets better and better!

Shoe

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Looks great!

Franklin Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

Really impressive - and easy to use, too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Really like the gardening summary's of each state; always so much to learn. Yes, super easy to use and thanks !

Dea

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Really nice. I found some nurseries I didn't know about. LOL

Betty

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I like it! The map is really easy to use and it's nice to be able to look at nurseries near all the main cities, that will come in really handy when travelling. I like the little summary of gardening in each state and the state flower too, that's really cool.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Fantastic..now we all need to get to work listing good nursery centers we know about in our own areas.

When I travel to Houston and Austin, I go through a lot of small towns. I would love for everyone to add to the existing list making it lots of fun to be on the road. (not leaving out trips to Dallas ,etc)

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I like it. One of these days, I'll start visiting some of the new places I found there!

Crossville, TN

Of course I had to check out Arizone.....nice picture....but it says that it is the "Arkansas State Tree".....whoa....it's a Saguaro Cactus.....Jo

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Chuckle...Jo, I just wanted to see if your sharp eye would spot it!

More seriously, it was a goof - thanks for letting us know ;o)

And there may be few other "oopsies" among the states and provinces. I started Thursday afternoon and finished late Saturday morning getting all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces completed. (It was fun researching all the official emblems, nicknames and mottos, then selecting a unique plant, wildflower or tree to include. Picking a great photo from PlantFiles was pretty easy - lots of good ones to choose from! When I had all that gathered, I created the state's text and copied/pasted some code that displays the photo and plant name. (That's the long way of saying there was a lot of copying/pasting the code from one to the next, then changing the name and URLs, and that's where the Arizona/Arkansas mixup happened.)

I'm happy to report there are only two overlaps (that I can recall, anyway ;o) Two Canadian provinces share the same official flower as a U.S. state. But you'd be surprised how many states have Quercus alba (White Oak) or Cornus florida (Dogwood) as their tree and/or Viola sororia (a wild violet) as their flower!

North Augusta, ON

I went and looked for Ontario...there isn't any info or official plant showing :(( or New Brunswick either....did ya forget those two?? lol

Terry did put them in, but a bug in my system was preventing them from showing. This is now fixed. :)

dave

North Augusta, ON

yayy....thank you :))))

Happily. :)

I have the code ready to expand this to include those other countries in the world, but as yet very few have been entered. Outside of North America, only 12 entries have been created. That makes it not worth my time to add nice browsing tools for Europe, etc.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

How do we get information to you about garden centers that may not be listed? There are some great ones here, and should be inluded.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just went to the regular Go Gardening regular site and added garden centers....then when this site came up, all the original entries were there.....
someone else have a better idea???

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

defoecat, when you click on the Go Gardening tab, there's a clickable button to "Add a new entry" on that page. If you want to add them yourself, that's the way to do it.

If you don't feel up to the challenge of filling in all the blanks and finding the long/lat coordinates, you can post a list here or dmail them to me - either way, I'll need the names and city/state, please); I'll be happy to add them for you.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Terry, that will be a project for me in the weeks to come. You know I am busy, what with the ORVG RU this weekend, and all that summer has to DEMAND that it get done. Will you be coming to the KY RU at Prizer Point again this year? DH is coming with me, as he has decided that it is safe, and I haven't been kidnapped, molested, etc, by those internet people!!, and I have been for 2 years in a row. Do you think that he was hoping that I wouldn't return from one of my visits? LOL

Franklin Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

Terry, I am feeling particularly dense this evening.

When I click on the link that is provided at the top of this forum, I end up on a page with the U.S. map and all of the states on it. This is the address: http://gardens.com/go/browse/gardencenters/

When I click on the Go Gardening tab at the top of my page on DG and my home page on Gardening.com comes up - and I click on the Go Gardening tab, I end up here:
http://gardens.com/go/

Is there a way to access the "U.S. Map" feature from my Gardening.com home-page?

Sorry if this is convoluted ...

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

The navigation can be a wee bit confusing at this point ;o)

To get to the map from the Go Gardening tab, here's the fastest route I've found:

1) Click on the Go Gardening Tab.
2) Click on the "Home" tab at the top.
3) In the center section for "Go Gardening", look for the links under "Other Area Resources" and click on any of those links - and the map will appear.

Franklin Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Terry, It worked like a charm.

Nevada, TX(Zone 8a)

Very cool!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I thought it was cool too...up came Hawaii and my little town. Would love to help you guys by filling in the information lacking!!!

Question....I can get to Go Gardening from Daves....but how to get back to Daves?????

Carol

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Carol, down near the bottom of Go Gardening, in a brown-shaded area is a link back to DG ;o)

Oro Valley, AZ(Zone 9a)

Impressive! ............ as well as easy to navigate and use.
