Anyone have the Sarcococca confuse ‘Christmas Box’ from FCG?

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Chantell, Gita already knows me, I worked with her on the "Bob Hope "camelia. If she has some seed of sweet srub, I would like to try again, because I think I should have strarified them for at least 90 days, and didn't.I lost the whole batch.

BTW, I orderd from lazyssfarm, and got an abilia, and the sarcococca, and they are good healthy, well packet, in fact they are the best packers I have ever dealth with.Thank You, Mike

Excellent!! Hope you get some and they do well for you! Did you leave feedback in watchdog re lazyssfarm?

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Chantell, I guess the way to stay ignorant would be to never ask.Mike

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Nah...it's all good...just good for others to know your exp w/a vendor, that's all. I always look to watchdog BEFORE I order from a vendor I'm unfamiliar with.

Mike ... we're gonna miss you at the RU tomorrow.

Sorry Susan, I'll miss it too. Can't be helped, but thanks anyway.Mike

Chantell, so where did you get your sweet box? And how are they thriving? How much sun do you think they can handle?

Zanesville, OH(Zone 6a)

Chantell...the Plant Ranch doesn't have much to offer at this time. Any ideas what's up with that?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

That was the only time I've ever ordered from them...so I can't really comment much. If they have a number listed maybe you could give them a call and see if it's something they'll have back in. 2 of the 3 I kept are doing fine...very slow to put on growth but both appear healthy. Not sure that they get much of any direct sunlight - mostly filtered all day.

Mike - since you did well with Gitas plant...shoot me a reminder later in the season...if these babies put on any decent growth I'd be happy to take a few little cuttings for you.

Zanesville, OH(Zone 6a)

Chantell,

From what you've observed, is the sweet box strictly a shade plant or can it take some AM sun? I have a place in mind for it and am thinking I should order now so they can start growing LOL.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I wouldn't think (I'm guessing here) that a few hours of early morning sun would be an issue...not so strong then

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Mine gets sun untill about 11:30AM with no problems.

Caren,

That is definitely good to know! I want some type of evergreen for my 2 front garden beds (on either side of the front porch of our Cape Cod facing due east). If I can find a fragrant plant for whatever purpose I have in mind, all the better LOL. It can get into the high 90's in the summer here...easy...plus humidity. Our winters are the worst, plant-wise. We rarely get an insulating cover of snow. It's wet, windy & icy for the most part. This plant is right on the cusp here for hardiness. But I'll never know unless I try! If it doesn't thrive in that area, I have another I can move it to.

Zanesville, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, I ordered 3 plants from Lazy S's! Yay! I'm not sure if I'll plant them right away or pot them up for the summer and plant them in the fall...hmmm. I plan to put 2 in our front beds, close to the house, that get AM sun. The other, I plan to put in our shady backyard...close enough to the house so I'll be able to smell it when it gets around to blooming. So, how many years do you figure it will take for this plant to mature and bloom? I'll post pictures when I get my plants so that you can see their size.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I got mine in spring 2007 and it has been full of buds since winter but strangely they have not opened yet, still just sitting there. It must have had one open because I had a berry with a seed in it a month or 2 ago. My plants looked much like Chantell's pics above.
It sure is an odd plant!

I ordered 3 Mock Orange “Snow Belle” from FSG in April of last year. You might want to check into something like this. Mine are a bit straggly but are already blooming a little this year. :)

Mockorange Snowbelle
Philadelphus Snowbelle
These are the "orange blossoms" carried in summer weddings for centuries! A Dwarf with Double Blooms!
Indescribably fragrant, and compact enough for large containers as well as the sunny garden!
Find a special place for this fabulously fragrant, beautiful dwarf Mockorange! Unlike its rangy 5- to 10-foot cousins, Snowbelle is a compact, super-flowering little dwarf with the sweetest scent and most flowers per inch of just about any shrub in the garden. You will love it in any sunny spot!

These blooms are fully double, and they arise by the many hundred all over this 4-by-4-foot shrub. Mockorange blossoms have been decorating June weddings for centuries, and one whiff tells you why! Not only are these 1-inch white blooms lovely, but their fragrance is simply irresistible. Sweet without being cloying, it has a fresh citrus zing that is really delightful!

Snowbelle was bred in Ottawa, Canada, so it has terrific winter hardiness, as you might expect. (Most Mockoranges are hardy only through zone 5.) But it also has terrific heat tolerance, blooming earlier but just as heavily in warm climates as in the cool north! More adaptable to differing soils than older varieties, Snowbelle is just an all-around easier, less fussy, more flower-happy Mockorange!

Plant Snowbelle in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. It makes an unforgettable accent or specimen (solitary) planting, and flanks the garden entry or pathway beautifully! Even compact enough for large containers and garden urns! Zones 4-8.

You know you are only three years too late letting me know this.I bought another, that is supose to be as fragrant, but isn't.It is philadelphus, but not "snow bell".To make matters worse, I cut as many cuttings as I could from them, and rooted them.I have stuck my nose, like Ferdnan the bull, to smell these.DW said maybe you need to sniff at night, witch I did with no more sent, and DW said maybe they have taken the compost smell.Never a dull moment here!! I ordered 2 Mock Orange 'Innocence' from FSG & they bloomed the 1st year! Smell wonderful. I see the buds setting up for this yr. & am looking forward to it.

Oh my Snowbelle smell very light and wonderful. It's true that they have a light citrus fragrance. Only one is blooming right now, so I can hardly wait for the other 2 to break out. I've never heard of the Mock Orange 'Innocence'. Help ... I need a bigger yard!! LOL

Supposedly, Innocence is the most fragrant MO. That's what the catalogs say anyway. I have nothing to compare it to :~)
