Anyone have the Sarcococca confuse ‘Christmas Box’ from FCG?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Why oh why didn't I get some of this while Glenn had it?!! Esp. since Becky and I placed our orders months ago when everything was in stock.
Ok...if any of you bought it or ended up with extras of it would you please dmail me? I would be happy to wait until next year when your's has put on new growth to do a trade or happy to buy an "extra" off of you. I have a perfect place for this beauty and am so sad I didn't even click on shrubs/vines when making up my order list.

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

I would say, no wonder they are sold out at that price, when I last looked them up they were $11.00 + shipping.I have been wanting sweet box, since I heard of it, but thaught that was too steep.I'm waiting, and watching.Mike

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Mike - I "risked it" and ordered from a nursery I wasn't familiar with...but at their prices I figured, why not? Ordered yesterday - happy to post when I receive them.

I'm watching and waiting, also. :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

ROTFL - sure, I'll be the Guinea PIg :)
Hugs to all!!

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Chantell, is the sarcocca confusa, the same as "sweetbox", whitch, I thaught was a ground cover(growing low to the ground).I can't remember the latin name, but don't google sweetbox.Mike

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Mike - according to Flower Scent Garden's site - it goes by that name as well. But I've seen another plant go by that common name as well..it's a tad confusing to me...ugh!

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

I think I found it;sarcocca hookerana

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

There's this one: Calycanthus floridus http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/550/ (couple different varieties of this http://davesgarden.com/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=&searcher[family]=Calycanthaceae&searcher[genus]=Calycanthus&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&Search=Search)
And here's the one from Flower Scent Gardens Sarcococca confusa also known as Christmas Box or Sweet Box http://www.flowerscentgardens.com/sarcococca.htm
(it also has a couple of varieties: http://www.hardybamboo.com/shop/products.asp?c_urn=61&show=Sarcococca)
See why I get so confused?

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, now I feel a termite in a yo-yo!!!Too much sweets, but I'm after the sweeter, the better, I might get all of the above.Mike

Oh my goodness ... I need a bigger yard!! sigh

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Amen!! Keep thinking I'm going to ask my neighbors (since they dont' really plant anything) if I can "borrow" their yard..LOL.
Mike - I completely trust Glenn at FCG to have the varieties with the best scent....which is why I went with the Sarcococca confusa. Sure you've done this already but I google the name of the plant and then type in scent after it. It's been very educational to say the least. As with everyone I have scents that I prefer over others so I'm trying to fill my yard with those.

Good luck with "the plantranch" if it's the same one on Ebay. I bought several plants from them a couple years ago and half were DOA. Tried to claim they were dormant and to wait 8 weeks (mind you they have a 2-4 return policy). Then they wanted me to pay shipping again to send replacement plants. Wasn't worth it.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

budgie - thank you but I don't' believe they're one in the same...they're located in 2 different states and as was pointed out to me there are no similarities in their website design.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Good glad to hear it. I ordered some kiwi amongst others and all I got were dried sticks.
Their feedback is terrible.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Chantell, I bought one from Glen this spring and you are welcome to a cutting if you are still in need of one.

Caren,
You are SO sweet...thank you for the offer...I did orde 4 babies of these from another internet nursery that someone sent me the link for. *fingers crossed* Hoping these will do ok once I get them...will let ya'll know. Thank you again!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ha!!! They arrived - fast delivery...well packed - good size with good root systems!! He even refunded me the GA tax that was automatically added on when I "checked out" How fair is that?!! Remember these only cost me $2.29 each!! Going to post this on the other thread that we were discussing it as well.

BTW - anyone who ends up ordering the Sarcococca confuse if there's a place for a note - please tell him I referred you...and we're all on DG - I think he needs to get his info posted here on Watchdog. I believe in sharing good deals.

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Chantell, I tried to order, but could'n get through the red tape, maybe they will e-mail me, and we can do business. The prices seem unbeliveable, and would like to order rhodedendrum, but just can't seem to get through.Did you have a regestration problem, at first?Still trying. Mike

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Mike,
I didn't have any problems re ordering...but I've been told the Sarcococca confuse is sold out...hmmm, I may have told you that already...sorry if I'm repeating myself.

Here's the pro's and con's that have been my exp. for that nursery:
Pros - fabulous prices - quick delivery - very fair s/h prices - healthy nice sized plants.
Cons - no email or phone communication - unless my spam filter removed a response, I didn't get a response to my email nor the message I left via phone.
I would order from him again though, as I believe the Pro's out weigh the cons.

The seller on eBay referred to above is not The Plant Ranch -- their name is plantranch and they are in MI. Never ordered from them.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Did you have bad luck with them? It seems so many complain about plant size....not a good buy if the plant is so small it doesn't thrive.

NOTE to all: all my little guys I rec'd in that order are still doing well.

Re: plantranch on eBay - there is just something about the way they list their items that has put me off - so I have not ordered from them. Also, they have many complaints about getting smaller plants than described -- or getting dead plants.

Two others I would not recommend on eBay are:

Lee's Nursery in TN - their prices are cheap and the shipping is reasonable -- as several have reported in Garden Watchdog -- however, three of the bareroot plants they sent me did not live. They advertise replacements for those that don't thrive. When I requested a replacement, they wrote asking me to nick the stem and see if there was green underneath. I did and reported to them that it was brown. I never heard from them again. I have left a comment about them in Garden Watchdog. I should have looked them up there before ordering as their rating is terrible.

The other is bloomsnbuds. I ordered two mimosa trees and an ostritch fern. The fern was fine, but the mimosa trees arrived DOA. They made no note on the package that the contents were perishable - so when they arrived all the leaves were fried. When I complained, they promptly refunded my money. However, that meant that I paid $6.49 + $12.00 shipping for the fern. Way too much. Also, the mimosa trees were described as 2" tall -- well, they were - but they each had only one 12" green branch -- not my idea of a "tree".

I am keeping a personal list of plant sellers on eBay that I have dealt with -- good or bad. I would like to see a thread where we would list our experiences with the sellers on eBay since most do not have an actual web site and so we can't put them in Garden Watchdog. I have had good experiences with a number of sellers on eBay and an equal number with bad experiences.

Karen - I think that would be a great idea...maybe you could mention that to Dave.

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

Okay. How would I go about it? Just send him a d-mail?

Karen

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Or post a new thread here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/dg/all/ That way others could voice their opinion letting him know as well.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

All you have to do is check the feedback on Ebay before ordering. If they are in the watchdog, you can comment there also. I don't know that we need a separate feedback for Ebay sellers,

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

The problem with feedback on eBay is that if you get bad plants or the seller won't stand behind the guarantee, many people (me included) will not leave negative feedback because the seller will retaliate via negative feedback to you, saying that he/she was completely right and you are a terrible buyer and a liar. I understand completely how the feedback system on eBay is supposed to work, but because it is a two-way street, and you only have one line (about 80 characters) to explain why you are unhappy with the transaction, I find it less than satisfactory as a method to communicate real information.

Leaving feedback on eBay for a good seller is not a problem.

Karen

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

If you hold up your end of the deal and they leave you a negative, you can take the matter to Ebay for mediation. The seller would have to prove that you did something to justify the neg feedback. I have had neg feedback reversed by doing that.

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

I have ordered weeping willows for two different Yrs., and the last time I ordered from spring hill, the willows came in a long box, they had no leaf growth, and they shipped these in june.I cut them way back, and planted, and watered the plants, buds formed, and never reached full leaf, then died. What went wrong? Did I do something wrong, I put them in mirical grow mix, and then in the lat house, and they still died.My gripe is, I don't think they should have shipped them till fall.No ship date was discussed, but I assumed they would ship in fall.Mike

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Hay Chantell, Have yours flowered yet? Mine has been full of small buds since Xmas but only 2 flowers have opened. I never did see them open or smelled them but I had 2 ripe fruits today. both had one seed inside. Maybe I have a shy plant but gosh I want to smell those flowers!!
Caren

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok...Caren...been bustin' my behind in the front and back yard but hadn't checked them. Just went out there...I have some buds on mine and some that appeared to have flowered and died already...*sniffle* I must have missed those. I don't see any of the dark berries they refer to though. Do you have pics of yours?

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I have already picked them. They were bright red and starting to wither. Sorry, I didn't take a pic.
Caren

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

No worries...I'm going to keep an eye on mine..would love to get a whiff

Danielsville, GA(Zone 7b)

Chantell, would you believe I'm still looking for this?? Mike

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Chantell, I just stumbled across this. I think Gitagal has seeds for this shrub.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)
