Best thing/worse thing and what did you learn today? (Part 3

Victoria Harbour, ON

Too funny Tropicanna...if weather in NC is like ours today - weather breaking temps in the 30's then no wonder the poor little plant got fried...do you think a little tender love and care would bring it back???? or perhaps you can go to the nursery, pick up another, replace it and no one will be the wiser.... Will the Lost finale be on another channel..i.e. re-runs??? I have a routine..after my bath, I get a drink for side table, position the pillows to accomodate comfort for reading, turn the light on next to my bed, get my glasses on, my book out, t.v. on low and on timer, work myself into pillow and bed until I'm comfy...watch the cat (sometimes cats) and dog get into their routine...open the book and within seconds I'm sound asleep and my routine - well, just doesn't work out...

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Yeah, I have no real routines, with a 6 year old and my job....sad that not even LOST could keep me up last night, until the cat came around...lol

Auburn, AL(Zone 8a)

Best would be that we ordered a treadmill from Amazon.

Worst would be that BCBS insurance has informed me that I have to meet my deductable of 1000.00 before they pay for my insulin injection ports. So I guess it's back to giving myself 7 shots a day and risk site infections.

What I've learned: that insurance companies make no sense.

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

morning all..
hey ves and betty......hello to everyone on the thread... isnt it getting huge!!! I love it..

This morning woke up sore but im a fighter... heh its the old fibro myalgai acting up. Not sure if anyone has ever heard of it... its a nusiance. actually its what brought me to DG all those years ago belive it or not. I had just been diagnosed with it (amongst other things) and i was researching it. at the time DG had a thread that was talking about it and thats how i found DG!!

worst thing?.. the Fibro...

Best thing?... going to buy a lemon tree today to plant... have always wanted one. had one growing up and love using fresh lemons....

day is still young so i am sure there will be a lesson in it for me... DD is coming over today with Rylie as i am watching my GD for a while as they are going on a visit to a friends.... i will try and take a snap of the baby then and post it for you...

have a great day!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Best: Had 4 DG Visitors today, who brought lunch, did some weedeating, mowed my back hillside, and assembled my new Mantis tiller!

Worst: my Doc thinks I have colitis (I do not). 2 new prescriptions of antibiotics... which is okay since I've been running a low grade fever.

Learned: NEVER underestimate your DG friends!!!!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello all!

(passing out Poor Man's strawberry shortcake to all)

Strawberries and whipped topping on frozen waffles, LOL)

I'm really having a time keeping up with all of you. I would love
to respond to each of you individually, but I can't do it on a
regular basis, so I'll just bake and cook for all of you. :-)

Best thing for yesterday? (long story, bear with me)

I went to an antique / flea shop looking for a dresser,
small table, etc. Lo and behold, I found one. As I approached
the dresser in sight, a woman with a very heavy New York accent
(think George Castanza's mother) was tearing into her husband,
discussing the very dresser which I was heading toward.

While pretending to look at other items, she all but chewed him a
new one. "It ain't gonna fit, I don't want it, stop talking about it, it's
gonna hit the door, wah wah wah." LOUD. Very loud and obnoxious.
Other customers were looking at them like jeez, where are your manners?
I don't mean talking loudly, I mean she was actually yelling at him.

The man kept sheepishly saying "I think you're wrong, I think it will fit" while
she yelled louder, but instead of moving on, she stood there opening and
slamming the drawers shut while the mirror held on for dear life.

Finally, she said, and I quote "I don't want it, I don't wanna hear another
thing about it, I don't want it." So, as they walked around the corner, I yanked
the price tag off and proceeded to shop.

Suddenly, here they came back to the dresser. Same conversation, different
tone. She was actually giving what he said a bit of thought. They went to the
cashier and asked the price. While the lady cashier carried on about how she
knew the price was there a minute ago, I sheepishly snuck up the aisle towards
the male cashier and explained what had happened to the price tag, that I
would take the dresser if they decided not to. I felt like a ham! (what does a
ham feel like, by the way? LOL)

Well guess what. Even after I gave them a chance and the store owners were
willing to let them duke it out, they could not compromise.

They kept yelling and yelling and the other customers were bothered by this,
which the owners noted.

The male cashier approached me quietly and asked "Do you really want that
dresser?" I said "Yes, if they don't, I do." He said "We are going to sell it to
you anyway."

Long story even longer, I felt like I had to hide the rest of the time they were in
the store. When the owner told them the dresser was sold, I thought the woman
was going to come after me with her obnoxious attitude, but instead I heard her
say "OH WELL!" very loudly.

Before they left the store, she walked to an aisle I was on and just looked at me.
Part of me wanted to stick my tongue out.

Worst thing of the day? I broke a nail.

What I've learned? Never haggle over an item in the store unless you have
it in your hands. And if you think you want it, don't let it out of your sight, or
I'm gonna buy it! LOL

Great story, Wuvie. Lucky you to get the piece after all.
Best thing today.......found out from the local Arts Commission that they are planning to plant a tree in memory of my husband in the park around City Hall. Sweet.

Worst thing today, worked in the yard and uncovered an ant hill....Geesh!!!! They were in my hair, my nose, my ears, inside my clothes.....didn't even know it till I felt/saw one on my eyelash. Thought it was sweat trickling down, and it was those pesky little ants.

What I learned.......Insect spray, or maybe don't disturb anthills.....
You all have a good night.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh my gosh, Sharran, been there, done that. I was sitting on the ground
working in the weeds and experienced the same thing. That is the
creepiest feeling!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Wuvie, I'm sitting here, laughing out loud..
you've made my day!!!!

Best thing that happened to me today was hearing that although they could not do the triple bi-pass that Alex has made it through the procedure that they did infact do...AND...the lady whom I bought this house from was walking up and down the street tonight with new hubby, went out and invited here in to see what I've done inside, but she was very impressed with what I accomplished in my renovations..so that made me happy...

What is the worse thing that happened to me...bought an ice cream cone..black cherry as I needed something to cool me down..in the 90's today...no sooner did I get into the car the ice cream portion of the cone fell onto the white suit I was wearing...oh well...I'm worse than a little child..don't know about all of you, but it seems as though I can never eat anything that I don't have proof on my outfit...

What did I learn today..I'm proud of myself for accomplishing so much here in the past 2 years..can't believe it myself...I'll give myself a pat on the back...

Talk tomorrow..tired tonight..hardly slept last night worrying about Alex...

Pacifica, CA

good evening all,

vess, i like the rock wall its going to look nice with flowers, im feeling a little better
if the weather would only be warmer i'd be ok.
welcome kassia
sara, thanks, im still having issues with our friend he's over reacting to a situation that should of been talked out, he's so bull headed he called the district office on his boss and is talking to his personal attorney and its silly, he called me again to ask what i thought of our district manager and if he was nice when he visited our store, i finally told him i cant be picking sides.

betty, wow that a long haul at least you dont have to drive, hope you got some rest after hearing about june's hubby did you finish the wicker yet? oh the duck, i dont know where the other one is i thought of that too someones dinner.

wuvie, a toast to you great story, glad you got it.

best:went out to eat
worst: had to deal with a customer who was not getting the difference between the expensive shears and the cheap stuff omg boss took over and said she was impossible and should of been shot.
what i learned, this thread is the best place around and all of you too

have a wonderful evening liz

Okay ... I have a looong story. Please bare with me. :-) I collect coffee mugs. I'm not sure how I started this, but I have approximately 80 from all over the US and other countries. I've been to some of these places but friends and family have learned of my facination and when traveling always add to my collection. Here's a pic of just a few of them. Believe me ... this ties in with this thread!

Now here's another view.

Now here's one that was painted by a very special DG friend.

Okay ... the best thing yesterday ...
I received a beautiful cup from a dear DG friend and I want to show it off. :) Here's a picture of my coffee cup from Frank. Isn't it a beautiful mug?

Thumbnail by

Ooops, forgot to say ...
The worse thing ... we still haven't gotten any rain waaay down south, so please please pray for rain for GA.
The best thing ... DG friends are the greatest!!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

OK, can't sleep, keep thinking of things you have written......
Wonder, did you get your lemon tree? Wish we could grow citrus trees here in KY....not to be I guess.

And Betty, I love the yellow wicker, can't wait to see the painted fabric cushions....be sure to take pictures. And your water garden!!! Would love to be there to sit and enjoy.

Araness, insurance companies and I don't go hand in hand either, but be very careful with your injections......

Vess, your rock wall is beautiful, can't wait to see it with flowers. It's gonna be lovely.

Kassia, I am new here, too, but love to hear from all these great folks.

Wuvie, let's stay outta the ants!!! Those little things bite!

OK, I had all these things on my mind, and just had to add them.
Hugs to you...

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Betty, do you actually know how wonderful you are?? You have a knack for making each one of us feel as if we are your best friend. You are interesting and outgoing, and I'm so glad to know you.

And that's not even my Best Thing for today. My Best Thing is that I had the day off, so my husband and I went to Letchworth State Park, about an hour's drive south of here, so I could relax, and try out the new camera. It was quite warm, 80-something degrees, and just a perfect day! We had lunch at the beautiful Glen Iris Inn (he had a Reuben, I had chicken fricasse) and hiked our tootsies off. We've been there many times, but never in the Spring. I took 277 pictures, and when we got home I downloaded them and narrowed them down to my favorite 134! Here's a nice one.

Worst thing. Once again, I'd have to say there was no worst thing. I had a perfect day.

Lesson learned. New York State is a beautiful State.

Thumbnail by nap
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Oh, Nap....how beautiful! I know nothing about NY, but know that I love hills and valleys and water....streams, waterfalls, lakes....all of it. Thanks for sharing your day with us.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Sharran, Thanks for the nice comments. I'd like to share one other photo tonight. This tree...how on earth does it manage to hang on to the rocky cliff so tightly!

(http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/726995/#top I hope Betty won't mind this link to my daytrip)

Oh my goodness!!!! The wonders of nature! And isn't it beautiful! You are an excellent photographer.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just off to work and will post when I get there, but there is ABSOLUTELY nothing you guys can't posts here...we're friends..if it is of interest to you then we'd like to hear about it..positive or negative, we're here to guide each other through....

Talk after 9...love you all Betty

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Worse thing yesterday::: Didn't get to plant like I had planned and sat on the computer most of the day!

Best thing::: Went out for supper and on the way home while still in town we saw about 6 adult geese herding a whole slew of goslings. Where's the camera when you need it. Then about 3 miles from home we saw 2 deer on the road and DH knew enough to look where they came out of and there was a black bear running for the woods. What a couple of wonderful sights!

What did I learn::: that even though it rained most of the day you can still get out and see wonderful things and that I shouldn't sit on the computer all day,

nap those are great photos are you going to share a few more with us?I love seeing others pictures.

Sharran thanks for the lovely comment. Did you sleep good?

l01 Wish I could of sent you some of our rain. I's share if I could. Mother Nature has a mind of her own that's for sure.

Wuvie your story was great and I'm glad you got the dresser. Some people are unbelievable out in public.

lizrainey we have a situation at work a bit different. There's a customer that comes in and she doesn't bother me a bit. But 2 of the girls don't like her. With the one you'd never know it but the other one you can tell. She doesn't try to hide it at all. The manager has talked to her and it hasn't made a difference. They keep asking me how I can stand her and I really don't have a problem with her..

Betty so glad your friend made it thu surgery. Bet that was fun showing the old owner what you have done to the house. I'm still trying to figure out how our old owner raised 6 kids in this house. It's only a story and a half 3 bedroom 1 bath( this was built before everyone decided they had to have more than one bath and 1 child per bedroom)

Wonder did you get your lemon tree? Love lemonade and lemon desserts! Yummm!

Hope everyone is feeling better and can enjoy their day today.

Hi All - ok, my best for yesterday..... hmmmmm, let's see. My son's baseball team (the Rangers) beat the Cardinals 10-0.

Worst: my son pitched 1 inning and was catcher for 3 and I missed them all!! WAAAAAAAAAAAA! I had to take my DD to soccer practice and then to DS's game. Got there right when it was ending! :(

What I learned: Watched our TiVo'd Deadliest Catch from Tuesday night and learned that there are some real crazy people in the world!! You wouldn't catch me DEAD on one of those boats in that sea!

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Yes!!! i got my tree and am planting it tomorrow which will be yesterday for you guys.. hahaha too funny... want the lotto numbers?????

best thing? my son bought me the tree! My youngest son. we went to the nursery as they were on sale, 2 for $20! when we got there the sale had ended and the trees were now 27.80 each! i turned and said ' well, not this time, cant afford it" and my son said "pick one mom and I will buy it for you". so sweet.

Worst thing? darn sore neck aback again.... grrr annoying.....

what did i learn? you never know when something good is going to happen so dont give up.. just keep going and take a peek around the corner it could be a good thing!

Now introducing!!! Rylie John Meek.. 8lb 9oz....51 cm long and cute as a button!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG! He's gorgeous! Didn't you say he was a c-section baby cause his head is beautiful! I love his cherub cheeks! Congratulations!!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, look at him! Is this the little man we've been waiting for?
Isn't he a doll! Congrats!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Ohhh! How cute! Is he a baby or a grandbaby? Beautiful when they are so sweet and little like that...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Don't you just LOVE looking at the photo's...when each of you speak of your area, your hobbies, you children well..it just seems like we are there peeking in....

Liz..you could have had some of our heat..yesterday Toronto broke a record! Don't you just hate 'workplace' politics..better not getting involved...thought working with family might create problems, but we all get along 100% here and work well as a team..so it's been a pleasure!!! My wicket set is all painted bright yellow..the cushions do not match but I'll take a before and after photo..will be creative and make the colors blend...that part is easy for me..love the art part...Lovely photo's of the ducks "mallards" right? Hope the other finds it's way home to you...

101...thanks for sharing your photo's..Nice collection of mugs..imagine..your own hand painted personalized mug..you are a spoilt lady indeed!!

Sharran..so nice to see you join in...gardening done now? What a lovely tribute it will be to have a tree planted in memory of your husband...in town, families or organizations can purchased benches which are placed throughout the town, front of stores/parks etc. each has a placket with the name, birth and death date and individual who donated either the bench or tree....such a nice thought..I truly believe you should look after the dead as well as the living..I used to go to Port Hope to put flowers on a friends grave and while there I would look at unkept tombstones, a lot of them you could see that their dates related to wartime years, so I'd clean them, talk to them and kind of adopted them...nutzie right...I was at an antique shop many years ago and there were two beautiful frames with oval dimentional glass...half of one of the soldiers face was missing..I purchased them, brought it to be re-constructed..you'd hardly notice it was done, gave them a name and everyone knew they were no relatives, but through the years we had wonderful stories unfold as to their backgrounds..I always thought how sad it was, that they fought for our country, probably died, no parents/no family lest..thrown out into the garbage...well, I still have them in my bedroom and feel comfort looking at them...now you know what a crazy lady I am...don't know if I did this right..trying to post photo's of them...now I've really got off track..how did that happen...???....have patience with me this morning, must be tired..that's whenI ramble the most...

Nap, What wonderful words of encouragement you've given me..thank you..now that will have to be my 'best thing' of the day tonight when I post... wow 277 photo's..they are breathtaking..awesome scenery and yes, you have a talent for photography!!! Have been to New York state so many times, has it's own beauty...another little tidbit of info..when I was 21 I was one of 3 individuals hired by American Express who was opening an office in Canada (trial basis - now look at it) was hired for my ability to speak French and English..managed the 'space bank' dept..back then it was hi tech..booked hotels/cars etc. for amex members all around the world..anyway..my manager was called Allan Franklin from New York City, anyway, he purchased a home in Mississauga and almost every day he'd come in to tell me how many trees he had on his lot..he was like a child in a candy shop..couldn't get over he owned a lot with over 30 trees..I was amazed by his excitement...he stayed in Canada for 5 years and I believe he purchased a home in Connecticutt or somewhere very close to New York as he commuted...we take all our land for granted I guess

Vicki...computers can be so addictive..don't know where the day goes or is it the people you become friends with that makes it so addictive??? hmmmm.... you must live in the country..such a beautiful lot...Nothing more calming than seing wildlife in their natural habitat is there? Is the white tree a 'flowering crab' She sure is showing her spender..

Araness...treadmill..how wonderful..are you setting up an exercise program for yourself?
Don't overdo it though! Upsetting that insurances don't come good for services they say they provide...7 shots per day..wow that's a lot isn't it...no wonder you are disappointed that you will not have access to an alternative...

Darius..How wonderful it is for you to have DG friends to close that they can visit...I dohave a lady in town actually that belongs to DG but haven't seen her on-line past 6 months..has a young family so guess her time is taken up...Erynne from Mississauga is her sister..she's about the closest DG member to me I would say..am hoping she'll be able to visit one day...

Nothing worse than you still not knowing what is causing the health discomfort...med's will help out I'm sure, but you'll have to keep at themto do further testing..especially because you do not think that colitis is what is bothering you...hope the meds give you some comfort...

Wuvie, my mouth is just watering, strawberries..now that's my favorite dessert..I'll have to check if local markets have some in..our local berries are usually out mid June...now I am hungry... No need to respond to everyone, it's just that I have soooo much time to play here at work that I can play on DG so much...maybe I should get a life...right???? lol

Wonder...Rylie is adorable..thanks for sharing..now where's photo's of gramdma and mommie taken with his "Majesty"??? lol.... one thing that amazes me, from all the threads I've read and this one, is it's not large gifts, not major accomplishments it's little things that make our day, random acts of kindness...do you think that's true or am I reading something totally different from these posts??? so glad you son made your day with the 'lemon tree' now each and every time you reach for that lemon, you'll remember his kindness....

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Best thing: we are leaving work at 3pm!!!!!!! so I get another few hours to garden....

worse thing: I have to be at work (well, I do love my job!!!)

learned today: that seeds don't just grow into big plants overnight... (I was looking into the okra seeds I planted yesterday and nothing!!!!) oh, well, I guess I have to wait!!!!! maybe tomorrow???!!!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Kassia! Glad you mentioned Okra!

I put a few seeds into a hole, then covered it up.
Then I put a wine bottle on top (the bottom cut out of it)
and watered it well. In just DAYS they were up, and some
of the seeds I planted were old. They say Okra is picky
about germinating if not fresh, but these suckers just popped
out of the ground!

You can do the same with a plastic two liter bottle, doesn't have
to be glass, but the glass just holds more heat in, like a greenhouse.

Okra, yum!

Betty, love all of your pictures, you are so talented!

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

best thing today. somelese noticed just how spoiled elaine is. i keep telling her that. LOL

worst thing - she is gonna get even with me.

Great Falls, MT(Zone 4a)

Howdy all,

Wonder - your grandson is awesome!!
To everyone else, I have been reading, and am all caught up with everyone, just on the run, so no time to address all of the posts. Hugs!

Best : All of the daycare babies went home by 4:00 today, my kids are at competitive gymnastics from 4:00 - 7:00, and for the first time all week, I am alone. Ahhhhhhhhh.

Worst: One of my daycare parents doesn't feel it is important to answer or return my calls (I have been trying to get a summer schedule from her for a week, as the grandma comes for much of the summer, and I would like to know if I will be employed ). I tried to reach her several times last night. Today, when I dropped her kids off, she asked if I was mad at her for her not calling me back or answering the phone (she has caller ID). I was honest, and said that yes it was annoying, but I didn't have time to talk to her, as I had other kids to drop off. I hate anything that even remotely resembles confrontation. I also hate not having any job security. Oh well. At least I am home with my kids.

What I learned : Because I very seldom am stressed, I feel that I am entitled to stress free days, and when I am stressed, it offends me. HA! How's that for making it "all about me".

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Worst: Doctors are fallible (mine has a multiple choice about what's causing my abdominal pain although I STILL think it's gall bladder), and my new tiller came broken.
Best: Mantis is replacing my new tiller we assembled only yesterday because there was a broken choke lever.
Learned: There are actually some good companies still out there with great customer service!

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

hello all, thankyou he is cute!
lol tropicana... my son???? nooooooooooooooo been there and done that... thats my grand baby! My second here is a picture of my first.. her name is chloe....she thinks her brother is gorgeous!

wonder - don't have to wonder if she is gonna be a heatbreaker, she already is. now for your picture.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Wonder..she's absolutely beautiful..what I wouldn't give for a grandaughter..maybe I could adopt one..could I????

Kassia, I'm as bad as you are, I plant something and then I'm outside about ten times a day looking to see if it's peeping it's head out of the ground..so silly!!!

Darius, are you feeling any better? is the meds starting to break that fever..don't play with those doctors..if you still don't start feeling any better, please try to find another...

Green971...you deserve an 'all about me day'..for sure..did the little ones win at gymnastics..perhaps they don't actually win do they..do they get points perhaps...

Herbie..think you and Elaine make quite to thread buds..so nice to see the friendship...and..she will get even lol maybe you can make up and send her a mug...

Just thought Wuvie that if you have straight pine boards that it might be something that hubby can whip up quickly for sales etc...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Herbie..Wonder is just shy, I've seen a photo and she's gorgeous...

Now for my day...

Best thing of course was having to throw away my sunbonnet because everyone was so nice to me today with lovely words in the posts that my head just grew about 3 sizes..lol...but, another thing did happen..when we got home from work today I went to mom and Jim's cottage to pick up a nice dining table set for my niece that just purchased a home and is moving in on the weekend..she loved it, very modern with glass bevelled top...nice to see kids trying to get ahead...

Worse thing...my battle with the squirrel..no matter how many times I screw the top of my birdhouse on, he throws it to the ground...don't mind feeding him but wish he'd let the birds have their treats as well...

What did I learn today...that I'm one step ahead of the game by getting all the grass cut tonight..tomorrow I can focus on the other 20 to-do things on my list..I challenge myself each weekend...that way, I seem to accomplish more...also learnt that my DS - eldest who flew to Calgary, won't be moving there..we had 90 degree weather here when he left and arrived in a blizzard..nope..he'll be staying here..

Well, I'm rather tired out tonight, so I'm off for something to eat..forgot it was supper time... a leisurely bath, watch t.v. for a 1/2 hr. or so and up to do battle with the squirrel bright and early in the a.m. lol
Have a great night everyone...God willing, I'll talk to you in the morning....
