WOW Liz they sure big and Beautiful .
Eating them sounds so cool .
Welcome!
Liz, it is lovely tropicals like that that make me drool with envy! Now the question is... what do they taste like? (please don't say it tastes like chicken!)
Alligator tastes like chicken. lol. Has some earlier in the week. Pretty good.
Things described as tasting like chicken...Alligator, frog legs, rabbit, rattlesnake....and almost anything else we have trouble explaining to someone who has never tasted it. But I say chicken tastes a lot like rabbit...
I tried the alligator without knowing what it was. I didn't even know it was game. It really did taste like chicken. With a little spice. lol
I say, if it tastes like chicken, just eat chicken..:)
They blooms actually have a tart taste and they're crunchy, I like to eat them right after the tube on the bloom opens. The tastes reminds me a a blackerry when it's almost ripe, with a hint of citrus. I actually eat alot of blooms around the nursery, Alpinia galanga, Pineapple guava flower petals and other Costus, if they have a tubular bloom. Some people put the blooms sliced up in salads.
Today we're smoking ribs and I marinated them with fresh Curcuma domestica (longa) rhizome.. better known as Turmeric, rosemary, thyme, peurto rican oregeno, garlic and red pepper...mmmm they smell so good. If you cover your meat in the smoker with curcuma, hedychium or alpinia leaves the meat stays really moist.
Back to weeding and grazing out in the nursery :)

Liz....Beautiful picture! I use my woody stems of rosemary as skewers when I grill chunks of meat, like shishkabobs...it flavors it from the inside out.
My husband laughs at me because I munch as I walk through the yard, or make people rub their hands on things and smell them. I think I have around 15 different flavors of mint, and probably 10 different basils....
Maybe we should give chickens a break and tell everyone chicken tastes like gator?
:)
Mary..LOL I totally agree about the chicken/alligator. I can so relate to the munching as you stroll.. :) Nice to meet a fellow muncher. Thanks for the rosemary skewer tip, I'll have to try that, since I use rosemary for everything else. I just had someone here today petting my Costus barbatus...
Wow, I love mints and basils, I use Greek column basil quite a bit, gotta love a good basil that's also a perennial, I'm alswats walking by my plants and rubbing/smelling/tasting...LOL
If you ever get up this way, please stop by and we'll stroll and munch together and leave our husbands behind laughing at us :)

ok Tropical gardeners, someone help me on this one.....
I was told, but dont know if it's true, that you can use the banana tree sprouts like hearts of palm....when you cut your banana trees down to a few feet, a shoot comes up and out through the center in a matter of days, and you can slice it into salads....
Anyone ever heard of this?
Sorry Mary, don't know about that one. Hopefully someone will respond that knows about that. But I gotta ask - isn't that an awful waste of a banana tree?
If you only have one banana tree, yes....but the ones around here grow like crazy, from underground, and if you don' take care to keep them controled, they will take over. Unfortunately, chopping from the top doesn't help, and that's where you get the center tender shoot. I'm not taking a bite of one, until I get confirmation from someone who has actually DONE it! :)
Anyone know about the potatoes that grow from the ornamental tropical potato vines such as Blackie and Margarita? Are they edible?
I know I have purchased things at the tropical grocery stores down here in Florida and planted them just "because" and have come up with some different looking elephant ears, etc....
Ya know, you might want to start a new thread with these edible questions.....That would be a real interesting chain of thoughts. Some people see how long this thread has become, and don't want to bother. And others, who might know your answers, just see Welcom and don't realize that there are actually questions here. Give that a try.
