This one can have a thread of its own. I could show the parents and pictures of the F1 cross and then get selfed pods off of it to do growouts.
Maybe I could pass the resulting seeds out and do a group experiment where people grow them out and post results..provided there is enough interest of course.
Another thing I want to point out is I`m an amateur at this. It is possible I could really blow it and make mistakes so keep that in mind.
***The results are being shared with the disclaimer that there should be allowed a margin for error since I`m new at this and I`m human. ***
For the most part the information should be valuable in some way or another as is.
First, here is the family tree. The flowers I used are from open pollinated sources so there could be some unknown hidden factors involved here. Check the picture.
The purple parent began almost solid with tiny blizzard specks here and there and progressed to a light blizzard and then streaks but nothing in regular pattern.
The pink blizzard parent was the one with better color distribution. This one began with a stowstorm looking blizzard pattern, progressed to striping and some ended up being almost white.

JMG Cross pink blizzard x purple blizzard
And now to help answer Arlan`s question:
I went out and found variations on the plant this morning. I actually have never seen one of these that was stable showing the same blizzard over and over but this one apeared more consistently marked than both the parents. It might be the combination of genes offered by both parents causing this or one blizzard gene may be dominant over the other one.
The white throat is dominant here and yes the pink in the throat could reappear in the F2 growout as well as the pink color...if I did this right that is. :)
Here are some variations I found this morning. There was only one lightly blizzard flower seen on bottom right. And there was one with the broader strip seen in top right. The majority of the flowers were very marked up with the blizzard markings like the one seen on top left.
The next step is to do a grow out of at least 30-40 flowers. Is anyone interested in doing a test grow of this purple one? We could divide the seeds out to the ones hwo show interest.
We could keep this thread on here and post results as they occur. I will come back here and post when the seeds are ready. I`m going to grow some out as well.

I meant most of the flowers look like the top left.
The broader striped one is top right and one flower showed that pattern so far. There were much fewer flowers showing the bottom patterns. It won`t let me edit so I`ll fix it tomorrow.
Nice Flowers
Well I'll tell you, nothing amateur about what I'm seeing!! I think you are doing an awesome job!! I would love to be able to grow out any you want me too!! LOL ☺
I really would be interested...
Great! I`m going to give them out "no strings attatched" and this thread should be interesting to watch as the flowers bloom...but the seeds have to get made first. It will take about 4-6 weeks.Maybe these would work for a warmer climate fall crop? And people in cooler climates could save them until the following spring.
Sounds like a plan to me. I could try for a few late blooms and also do some inside under my lights
Karen,
Count me in. I would be more than happy to participate in your project. Oh by the way I have to agree with Ronnie. I see nothing amateur regarding your experimentation. You get an A+ for presentation and investigation. It takes a lot of courage to proceed as you have and producing exciting results. Your work has great interest even here in Japan.

All this hybridizing seems difficult and way over my head but I just wanted to say you have achieved beautiful and vibrant results.
It really isn`t as complicated as it seems. You do have to be decently organized and take step by step. One step not done right and you have to try again. You have to think in the here and now as you go from one group of flowers to the other. It can feel relaxing and time seems to fly when you are working with the flowers. You also have to keep the future in mind and keep each step focused toward the ultimate goal.
You have to be patient and expect the unexpected.
I have things to contribute to the other threads but I`m out of time. I`ll try to make it back tonight and post new things. Bye/bye for now. Karen
I would also be thrilled to grow some out for you.
Karen,
If you have enough, please include me in growing out a couple, I would be thrilled also.
Karen, I'm just wondering, can hybridizing MGs be done inside the house with the same kind of results? We got a short season up here and I just don't know if the plants would get to the seed stage without being killed off by frost first. I'm thinking to try this with my hostas because I know for sure I can get seeds from them (just gotta put up with those ugly scapes, lol).
Hey sure. I should have plenty of seeds since it is blooming like mad right now. :)
I`m going to check for variations in the blooms tomorrow.
Hey Karen,
Since I asked so many questions, do you think you can spare some seeds for me!! Thanks for all the details provided to answer my question of the original thread! Keep up the good work!
- Arlan
Wow!! What beauties! Count me in to!!
:) Donna
OK,Great! I`m trying some little jewelry bags to keep the blooms pollinated to self. I kind of like using the bags so far. Now we wait for seeds. I`ll come back when the seeds are ready.

Karen, I hope you hold back lots of seeds for yourself, because the Mendelian numbers can help guide you, in years to come. Frank
Ok,yes to everyone. I`ll divide them up and send them out when they are ready. There will be a lot because this thing blooms like crazy. I can hardly keep up with the covering of the blooms!
I will do a sizable grow out myself and document the results. I think it will be a lesson in JMG gentics(Provided I performed the hybridizing correctly.) and valuable to anyone interested in these flowers. The worst thing that could happen id everyone gets to enjoy some pretty flowers. :)
Here is a picture of the flower in the rain. I`ll come back here when the pods start to form.

THEy just keep getting better and better................................
I agree. That bloom is beautiful!
This is very interesting. Can't wait to see all of the results. : )
I'll help you grow a few, if you need more people.

That is going to be one heck of a grow out. The plant is practically all blooms. I honestly have never seen one bloom this profusley and make so many pods! There should be plenty to go around and plenty for me to do a grow out myself. I wonder if the pink will come back? Probably. I`m going to put the hand pollinated pods and the open pods into two batches. the open pollinated seeds might be nice for a spot of color but they shouldn`t be used for the experiment because of possible cross pollination. I`ll send some of both.
Oooh ...... I'd love to get in on this. Will even trade you for some seeds of mine if you like! Your blooms are beautiful!
Is this MG already named or do you get the honor?
This one

looks similar to one lincolnitess got awhile back

and similar to the one Emma calls Fuji Frost...

They are probably all from the same lines of large flowered vines from Japan. This one is a hybrid between a open pollinated purple blizzard(That could have come from Emma directly or indirectly through a trade.) The pink one is a mystery but it has been breeding true.
I do not think it is anything totally out of the ordinary or amazing but it has a lot of promise and the budding is exeptional and it is very pretty. All the color patterns are varied with no two being the same. Some have a very pronounced ray and some do not. Some are almost solid and all this is on the same plant!
Now what we have is a hybrid and my idea was to find out about JMG genetics. What all will show up out of a cross of two blizzard patterns and two different colors?
We are about to find out.
As far as names. It is way too early for that. You would have to breed them over at least 3 and better 5 or more generations with a stable pattern emerging before you could officially name the variety as one coming true from seeds.
A stable blizzard pattern would`nt necessarily mean all the same flowers. I suspect that they would all follow the same blizzard pattern in which for example they would appear lightly blizzard in the first flowers and progress to striping or they might appear with a heavy spotting of blizzard with the light areas slowly increasing in size with each flower until they were almost white. It might also mean the flower did not carry a recessive for a different color or for a solid color.

I`m getting seeds. I want to send one hand pollinated pod of 5 seeds to each of the first 10 responders. I figure a group grow out of 50 seeds(5 seeds to 10 different people) would be interesting. 5 seeds is enough for about a 5 gallon pot and a 5- 6 foot trellis.
Dmail me if you want to grow out a pod and share pictures of results on a thread for JMG Cross pink blizzard x purple blizzard F2 grow out.
