My Lily bloomed 4 or five flowers, and the rest of the blooms died. This is the first time I have tried Lillies, and dont want to lose it. Can someone help please?
Help! My Lily is dying!
Sometimes buds will abort ~ has it been unusually dry or anything else out of the ordinary?
yes, it has been rather dry, we are down like 10 inches of rain. I put it in partial sun, was afarid if it was in full sun it would kill it. It still gets the sun it needs (I was told anyway) Thanks for your reply.
I lost a lot of buds on my asiatics last year due to a very dry winter. (and my lack of watering early on) We've been in a drought for around 7 years and this is the first year we're ahead of the game, for now.
You might try supplemental water if you're able.
Thanks for your advice Moby, I will do so.
You're most welcome, hope the rest of the summer is lovely for ya.
Thank you, and you as well.
Well my husband replanted my Lily today. I dont know if his timing was right from what i have been told, but he decides to do something, you dont argue! LOL!
I hope it pulls thru and bloms again, it is so beautiful when it does. Does anyone have any favorite types of Lilies?
I love them all, but have best luck with the asiatics and Formosa. Black Beauty and the trumpet lilies bloom for me but because they bloom late and hit the heat of summer the blooms don't last as long nor is the color as good as those that bloom in the spring. If you purchase from a catalog, look for the ones listed as early blooming.
My soil is a very sandy loam, or slightly loamy sand depending on which way you look at it, and the drainage is perfect for the lilies. I do water them frequently, about 3 times a week in periods of no rain. If your soil is heavy clay, you might want to prepare a raised bed or make sure that you have a pocket of sharp sand for drainage under the lilies. I had very little luck with lilies in Birmingham because of that sticky, heavy clay.
I have found that lilies are pretty heavy feeders. I top dress with manure in spring and fall and spot feed with tomato time release fertilizer.

Thaks for all your helpful info. I sure hope this one makes it. This i smy first try with lilies. As far as sand goes, I dont have the thick sand, I have the thin kinda gritty, and the drainage so far seems to be just fine. But as you know, living in an apt. I am unable to plant inground. I cant wait till we buy our own place vs. living in an apartment. Thank you again,
Cindy
Thank you! Happy Mothers Day to all!
Hi Lil,
As our weather "heating up" and the concrete, asphalt, bricks, ect. radiate even more heat like an inferno. Your flower pot maybe baking to the boiling point. Lilies typically bloomed for a short duration, then it rests, and try to grow for the next season. You may want to insulate your pot with a bigger pot. Using light color, black pot absorbs heat and does more damage to your lilies. Move your pot to where it receive morning sun, and afternoon shade, also will help.
Kim
Thanks Kim. My husband has repotted it in our whiskey barrell. One of the tenants moved out and left there whiskey barrell, so I gave it a home. LOL! It now gets a little more sun in the morning, but is more protected from the afternoon sun. It seems to be doing much better. I was afarid of it making thru the first day of repotting, as neither one of us are familiar with lilies. Now that is has made thru the transplaing, I just hope I dont kill it before it is time for more blooms! LOL! I dont expect more blooms out of it this year. Thakn you all fro your wonderful advice!
Happy Mothers Day to all!
CIndy
It's not going to bloom again this season.
Lil,
Get a Knock-out Rose for your wiskey barrel. This will bloom all through summer for you.
Sorry folks, I have to have this on Lilies' tread. But Lil needs all the help she can get to beautify her planting in a restricted space.
lol No problem ~ we won't confiscate your bulbs and kick you out of the lily club for daring to mention another plant!
Teheheheh, LOL, Dick. This is why I love DG.ers... Hey anyone has Lilies in bloom yet? Mine are going crazy in the garden right now.
Kim
Hey, Moby, notice I'm not the one that called you "Dick," this time. :) LOL
Oh lordy..... see how you've warped the poor girl's mind?? ;)
Eh! I didn't say a word!!!
Started it! :p
Arrrrrrrrrr, Cap'n.... There she blows.....
I think Lily_Love is right on target, lil beans. The heat here in the south can be too much for potted lilies unless you really protect them from the hottest part of the day, as I have found out myself from experience. I know you guys to the east have really had a heat wave - we've been luckier this year in that our spring has been for the most part mild and wet.
They do MUCH better in the ground. Hopefully your barrel planter will simulate that more. Lilies like cool soil even if tghe stems are in the sun. Good luck with your change of location!
Moby; It was a slip of the tongue, so to speak. Forgive, forgive. I'll strictly mention nothing but lilies from here on. Some mail vendor sent me an unknown white trumpet lily for my request of Casa Blanca. I ordered from this Co. before I learned about DG's gardenwatchdog. Ouch! Their rating is 3/10 go figure!
Oh jeeze, don't go sucking up to her now... :) LOL.
Seriously, I think we all at one time or another buy from vendors we wish we hadn't. But, even an un-named lily is a beautiful site. The thing with those type of vendors is that you can be pretty sure you're not going to get something exotic from them. :) And most times, the knowledgeable folks on here can usually identify the lily in question. Folks here have helped many times in the past year identify lilies I lost the tag for.
Diann
(don't sweat it L_L, it's all fun and games around here)
Watch it, Ahab ~ or I'll go after yer other leg too.....
Steve; Your lilies are beautiful, have you any Formosa Lily? I knew of someone in my region has success with this specie. I was given some seeds but forgot to sow them in the Fall thus have to wait. I hope to come back and tour this particular garden to get some picture of these wonderful lilies. They easily be 8-9 feet tall! I saw the stalk when it was bearing seed last Nov. I couldn't believe my eyes. BTW, I used to live in Galveston. :-)
HI Lily_Love, thank you :-)
Yes, I bought some Formosas from OHG a few years ago....planted them at my old house and in 2nd year they were 7 ft + tall. Also, one of my latest blooming. They do well in wet and muggy conditions as well. They were in an area where I was certain they'd rot, but up they came! I will order some more for my new place.
Care to share who is a reliable mail order source, Steve. I haven't gotten much luck with the ones that mail out their catalog randomly. I'd love to get Formosa Bulbs. My seeds will take several years. Thanks.
Kim
Oh, sorry - OHG = Old House Gardens. They're just about the best out there! I use them every year. I think they ship Formosa lilies during the Fall but they are of great quality.

BTW Formosa "bulbs" do not have the classic appearance of lilium bulbs...they're small and narrow and may have some narrow green growth...so don't be alarmed when you see them.
Thanks a million, I'm so happy. Ok, I'll be elated to get a hold of some of these bulbs. With 'some narrow green growth.." It's got to be 2 years in waiting period b/w seed versus bulb's stocks. One thing is fer sure. I came to appreaciate the gardening industry and people that works the field. I've more respect for them as I try to propagate plants as a hobby.
Kim
Good Morning all
Sorry I havent posted in a few days. With Mothers Day, Birthday, and our Anniversary yesterday, I forgot what it was like to sit down till this morning!
I hope everyone is doing fine and all your Lilies are just gorgeous. As far as my Lily my husband pepotted im my whiskey barrell, it is doing wonderful. It will not bloom again this year I am told, but it is much stronger % healthier, and greener. Has much more life to it. I just want to say thanks yo MOby, Lily_love, and everyone else for the great advice given to when I had questions regarding my Lily. This is my firt time with Lilies, and I am having fun learning (and still learning) I dont understand about the propagating of this plant, and when you are to separte the bulbs. Or if I just said the same thing with two different words. LOL Well thanks again everyone for everything & have a great and blessed day!
You're welcome, and you don't have to worry separating them until they become too crowded and the clump is unattractive. Propagation is something you have lots of time to learn.
Wait til full-blown 'lily lust' sets in and you'll be propagating like mad. I haven't gotten in to it much as space didn't allow. Asiatics multiply well, all by themselves!
Thanks Moby. It is kinda of funny, you think you are some what of a gardner, and then you come across a plant that just makes you think you know nothing at all.
LOL Happens every day, honey.
And I hope it never stops. :)
same here.
Moby;
Question for you, and others who could help. I transplanted several what appeared to be some "baby" Lilies that have taken a hike from the local nursery with my Mugo Pine home. These 'youngins' are but several inches tall, have several leaflets, but they appear to be bearing bulbils on the tops. Small bulbils that look kinda reddish or brown. What treasure am I getting? (A frugal gardener who's dreaming big! LOL).
Do you have a picture? I was looking at my martagon Terrace City last night and it appears to have bulbils at the top, but I think those are flower buds just forming.
