Any blooms yet on your WS seedlings?

Winter sown Tagetes patula and tenuifolia? Marigolds, anyway, and a little Gypsophila muralis / Baby's Breath

Nicotiana 'Lipstick Colors'. I think the name was maybe just a description by the person who sent the seeds. I have lots of these but this is the first to bloom and it does smell great

Geranium bohemicum 'Orchid Blue'. Hard to get a decent picture of this little guy, so check out weezingreen's plantfiles pic if you want, too. Even her picture doesn't quite do the blue justice - they practically glow and there are little purple stripes in the flowers.

I planted them among the Narcissus 'Avalanche'. The Geraniums should get a little bushy in the future but not interfere with the bulbs, so I'm told anyway. I still have a bumper crop of daffodil foliage; I can't bring myself to cut it back yet.

WOW! I didn't know you could winter sow nicotania! And that geranium is amazing! If you get any seed from it, I would love to trade for some!

You got to me to check my diary, I sowed the Nicotiana on March 26th... I meant to sow it earlier. So maybe not truly WS.... But the last wave of jugs was mostly annuals: Milkweed, Yarrow, Cosmos, Poppies, Hibiscus (annual / not hardy here?) etc. I should see flowers on Agastache and Gaillardia real soon too.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks - I am new to all of this - now I know!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Is this the same Geranium you have Claypa? I don't have names on my plants but it looks like the same :)
I had the hardest time getting a good picture of it too.

It's beautiful Kim! How do I get some?

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I also have this one which is kinda pretty:

Here is the file on your geranium, claypa:

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/69439/

apparently, it reseeds and the seeds are easily collected - I bet lots of winter sowers would love some of your seeds (hint, hint lol)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

This is the regular hot pink one that everyone has and I will have tons of seeds of this one.
The blue and the other one I will only have a few seeds from as the plants are quite small. I think they were winter sowed (direct sown) last year and things grow slow out here in the acidic soil I have :(

Sorry, this is the light pink one that I meant to post. The other pink is the closeup of the large plant posted above. This is a very light pink and the petals are thinner. Didn't seem to bloom too long but again it's not a very big plant yet :(

Kim, I would like the hot pink seeds too - I have a special plan for these! I want to sow the seeds for the pink and the blue to use in future gardens for the terrace.

Seandor, I know for sure that I will have TONS of the hot pink ones and I would be more than happy to share as much as I possibly can of the blue ones with you too :)

I think that they reseed because I found all kinds of little babies this spring that I dug up and moved together so they wouldn't be stepped on :)

Please just remind me as I seem to forget my name from day to day unless someone say "mom" *lol*

Kim

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay mom, I mean, Kim! Thanks!

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

kimsk, I don't know if they're the same Geranium or not... your blue one looks like G. pratense maybe. It's a more narrow, upright plant than some Geraniums.
Speaking of forgetting names, I've been searching my d-mail trying to figure out where I got my Platycodon / Ballon flower seeds....
Well, it's not IN my d-mail... anyway, I got them from you, and thanks a million for all the seeds, they're doing great!!! I'll post a picture tomorrow or whenever, but I dug a new bed 40x5 for all the winter sown plants, and the whole length is Balloon flowers and Bell flowers down one side, Echinacea and Helenium down the middle, and Caryopteris/Bluebeard Spiraea down the other side. And lots of other plants mixed in here and there, but that was the idea, to have a bunch of those. It should look great next year, don't know yet what all will bloom this year.

Nice job in the park Seandor! It looks like it was a lot of fun.

Claypa, yes you probably did get your balloon seeds from me :) I am so glad you are enjoying them and that they are doing well. Do you remember which ones I sent you? I have white, pink, blue, dwarf blue, double blue. I just got seed for the "splash" speckled ones and the double lavender ones :) I love them too :) I should have seeds of the white, pink, plue, dwarf blue and double blue again this year so if you didn't get them all and you remember which ones I sent you, I would be happy to share some of the others with you. I ran out last year of some color choices so if you let me know early I will make note of it.

Should you have any seed from your geranium to share Claypa, I would love to try a few seeds. You and Seandor are welcome to share what I harvest if you'd like :) I checked last night and I have quite a few more of the blueish ones than I thought I had. Are yours actually like a purple/blue in color? Mine are. I am definitely winter sowing this year.

You will never guess what I did yesterday. I can't believe I did this. It was recycling day and I was on my way to work. I noticed as I drove by one ladies house that she had like 5 nursery gallon pots (the big ones) and a hanging pot in her recycling. I passed by and went about 1/4 of a mile. I knew it was going to bother me all day so I turned around and drove into her driveway (luckily no one was home) and "saved" all the pots from the recycling truck which was heading down the road. My heart was beating so fast and I jumped back into the car. I prayed about it all the way to work and the answer that came back to me was "it was the right thing to do and it's not stealing it's recycling and saving mother earth". I couldn't believe I did this, it is so out of character for me. The things we do to winter sow *lol*

LalaJane,

That isn't a purple plant, it's a dead tree stump, well, not really a stump, just a section of tree trunk that I put there.

Kim, LOL! Next thing you know, you'll be dumpster diving for milk jugs.

Suzy

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

Last year I discovered a recycling bin that was always full of water bottles and three-liter soda bottles that were rinsed!
Recycling is every two weeks here. Our home deepo charges $8 for a 5 gallon pot like that, I was there last night getting plain terra cotta pots.

The G. in the picture is kind of purple, or an electric blue. I'm dying to get a better camera. Kim, I'm sure it was you who sent the seeds, I got blue and double blue platycodons. I will definitely try to save the Geranium seeds, but so far it's a tiny plant - there might be ten of those G bohemicum out there, so I'll keep looking. Kim, you and Seandor have dibs if I can get them ok.

Illoquin, I was hoping you would read my post above and reassure me that it's okay to cut all that Narcissus 'Avalanche' foliage back ......haha

Wow Suzy, it's so...so... purple. And so, so, plant-like.

LOL you could have told me it was some exotic imported plant and I'd have been hunting high and low for it. It's a beautiful picture, stump and all!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Claypa that is really SWEET of you! I would LOVE to split them with Seandor if you have enough :)
Would you like any of the white, pink or dwarf blue Platycodons this year?
I will also have plenty seeds of this flower also which is absolutely beautiful and flowered for a long time. I'm trying to get it identified right now and I think I may have it narrowed down to Polemonium Blue Pearl.
I will have many other things too if you are interested but I would like to try to get as many names of them as possible.

Here's a pic of the winter sown plants. You can't see the Platycodon/Ballon flowers but they're in there. Everything is WS except the sweet potato vine I kept over winter from cuttings, and a couple Artemisias near the street. I widened the bed yesterday so there's an empty strip down the 'lawn' side.

The biggest plants in there are Nicotiana, one at the far end is blooming. There are buds on a few Heleniums and Gaillardia! And the Gaillardia buds look to be blue? It's supposed to be AZ Sun (yellow and orange), we'll see. Blue would be awesome... maybe I confused it with something else.
Edited to add:The Gaillardia is what it's supposed to be and is doing great, the blue buds turned out to be Cornflower, Centaurea cyanus. Here's a link to a picture taken July 10th:

woohoo!! Way to go.

Thanks! Yes, I am thrilled. And I'll be even more thrilled when all that mulch is covered with plants!

Nicely done Claypa! What is that spikey looking thing in the front left corner? (I am prepared for the worse....when I ask Suzy about the lovely purple flower in the front left corner of HER pic I was told it was a log. LOL.)

La

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

No, you're okay this time, it's an Allium. There's a few that have big spikey flowers like that. They make nice dried flowers too.
That one is Allium schubertii:

claypa: Beautiful new bed! Congratulations on growing all those new plants via the wintersowing method!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I have WS blooms!!!! I have 1 (one) bachelor's button, one nasturtium, no morning glory blooms, no portulaca, no dahlias or anything else. I have 2 - 3 Calif poppies they're all Linen and no Mikado Red! Maybe I thinned all the red ones? I also have a few original orange/yellow ones. There was actually one dead red one after we got home after being away for a week.

I'm using my DD's computer - I have no idea what I just posted.

Oh, those are Marie Antoinette tulips!

Woohooo Carrie! I'm really surprised your blooms are this far behind . I am a zone below you and my BB's and poppies are almost finished. And oye vey with the petunias! I have seriously been pulling them like weeds....but the reason is because the colors got mixed and I'm so anal that the white ones in my purple bed were driving me insane. Of course had I known that 3/4 of them would turn out to be white I'd have left them and pulled up the purple ones instead. LOL!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

That's too funny, Lala.

Carrie, I'm proud for you!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Me too! I can't believe it! I grew things I've never heard of! And they bloomed!
