But is there such a thing as a Morning Glory specific herbicide? I noticed the I. cordatotriloba is starting to come up. I pull up the ones I see, but there is no way I can extricate them from my hedge rose.
Between the I cordatotriloba and the Lonicera caprifolium, I'm afraid the hedge rose will eventually succumb and be strangled.

Don't Shoot Me ...
It seems like all you could do is dig the unwanted vines up by the roots(being careful not to hurt your rose roots),cut off the roots from the vines and dispose of the roots in the garbage. Then the unwanted plants will die,you could pick them out piece by piece later and your hedge rose will have a chance to take over. That is what I would try. It may not be a long term solution but it will help your rose be able to grow for now.

Stay away from round up or broadleaf weed killers anywhere near your roses. Wind drift from these products can do serious damage to roses(JMGs and purpureas too!).
One idea would be something like a weed inhibitor or something that prevents weeds. I`d suggest removing by hand first and then using a safe for roses weed preventer. I can`t think of any right off hand but there are products out there safe around roses you could use. Just a few suggestions.
Hmmm I doubt you will find one specific to killing them and not the roses. But what you might find is a pre-emergence weedkiller, so once you have killed or cut back any growth this season putting this down as a granule should stop and seeds from germinating without killing your roses.
The only product i know is "Gasron g4" but not sure you can get it!

If i could get to the base of the plants there would be no problem. This hedge rose is huge and deep and I cant get to where the plants start without tearing myself up. There is a chain link fence in the middle of it and the hedge is just as deep and dense on their side as mine. I have made a sort of shepherds hook out of a dowel and one of those screw in hooks so I can pull the vines out of my reach to me to yank out. This year I am going to try my best to keep it from going to seed as much as possible so next year there won't be so many.
The picture is from last year to show you how massive this hedge is.

yep you have a problem there! Lol
If you keep tackling it you will get rid after a year or two. Its a battle of wills. I have won a few in the garden since i bought the house. Mainly the batle with bind weed and ground elder. Its just a case of digging it out every time you see a bit springing up. The bind weed is in a hedge and i keep pulling it and i'm winning!

Can you prune it back enough to get to the weeds? I know what you are saying. The thorns are brutal on those monsters!!! You just about need to wear a space suit to avoid getting torn up. I wear thick head to toe clothes and thick leather gloves and yep I always still manage to get scratched up when I prune the roses!!!
You think maybe you could hire someone desperate for cash to come over and prune it for you? Gee, I know how tough it is to get other people to do dirty jobs like that. I get scratches on my arms to prove it. People ask me "do you have a cat?" I say,"Oh gee..yeah but this is from my rose bush. " :)
I remember my husband telling me he was on the job trimming a tree and he heard this lady crying and hollering for help. Well, he ran over and there was this gigantic rose bush growing on the side of her car port. Her ponytail was stuck in it and she could not get out! He had to help her get loose from the rose bush! That was a bad hair day if I say so myself!

you could send a few to me. maybe it will help kill off my wild blackberry vines. gosh those are a pest.
serious though you have a few runners with roots ( i kill anything i try to root)that need homes let me know. i know i sound crazy but i have the most hideous fence in the backl still trying to get cover with things.
Used to prune a lot of roses for a living.... pruning all day long for a week or so. Did it with no gloves cause you can't get the same control with snips with gloves on. That was a few years ago and i still have loads of tiny scars on the backs of my hands from the major injuries!
I hate roses now! Always will.
Mike
Last year the hedge rose tried to eat me. I disturbed a wasp nest while trimming it, fell into it and got hit by lightning. If you want to read about it go here:

Oh my lord X, lightening? Glad you survived that. will head off to read about it.
edited to say: I think you are right about our Lord watching over you.. the way you wrote it, made me vividly picture what you were doing, thinking and how it happened..

The funny thing about it is that I have no conscious recollection of it now. I'm glad I wrote about it when it happened. It makes me shiver when I read it.

Imzadi, you don't want to add an additional pest .. trust me.

Oh my goodness. I don`t remember seeing that! You need to get help with the rose hedge for sure. I was thinking that some help would be best especially since you are waiting for your eye to get better after being sick.
Youch!
That hedge rose looks like it could take a whole neighborhood on!
