Time for a rain dance?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

This is terrible. here we are on the west bank of the river burning up and you all have the Darlington Race rained out. We must not be living right.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm glad to hear someone's at least getting some rain. I wish it would spread itself around more, though.
These fires are terrible.
Our forecast today was for ptly to mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain. It was a lovely hot and sunny day. :(

We got a drowning yesterday early evening. My rain buckets are completely full! I'm just glad that I got my new babies into the ground before it let loose:) Although I must have my head examined for planting with the thunder booming...and under pines, too! My goodness, what has this disease come to????

X: Froggie rain gauge says 1/4" overnight. Thankful for anything measurable!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Skunked again down here, not a drop. :-((((

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh no! Not again? Sympathy is heading your way, even if the rain clouds aren't.

Any rain yet? We got a bit more last night with a chance of light rain tomorrow. So lucky since I've still been planting in the new shady beds. Despite our rains, it's still pretty dry out there. Big pines suck up big water!

The "rain" we got yesterday was hardly worth mentioning. Really starting to have to water the grass and beds more. Some *weak* tropical systems wouldn't be a bad thing right now... would bring a lot of moisture to the area, we desperately could use it.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Nothing here ;-( .. running the sprinkers

We heard yesterday that our area is going under permanent water restrictions. Folks will be able to water on odd or even days depending on their house numbers. It said that there was no restriction on hand watering, though. I guess the hose and I will be good friends if the rainy weather lets up.

I know how you feel .. my water bill was 30 dollars over the norm last month.

Ouch!!!
Bev

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Our bill went up a good bit too. I think the water use tripled from Feb to April.

What's so bad right now is that our water company is experimenting with something and the water has had a TON of chlorine in it lately. I hate giving the plants that water, it smells like chlorox its so bad. I can't even drink it myself. I have had to start filling rubber made containers with water for my house plants and let it sit for a few days. Otherwise I'm worried I'll end up killing all the plants with that stuff. Not quite ready to give them Aquafina just yet. LOL

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Uh oh .. when tap water starts to smell like a swimming pool coming out the faucet, that usually means there is a lot of fecal matter and or cryptosporidium in the water! Call your local water company and ask for a copy of the most recent assay.

You can boil the water and that will take out the chlorine. For drinking and cooking I use a brita water pitcher. I've gotten so used to filtered water now, I can't drink anything straight out of the tap.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

we got a tiny bit today, hardly measurable though. it was SOOO smoky this morning. it was terrible. you couldn"t see a mile. the rain seemed to take care of that though.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

X, I'm guessing it's the lake turning over. It usually does it twice a year and this is the first time we've been in this house (on this side of the lake with this water company). So I can't go by precedent unfortunately. Over in Irmo I noticed it a few times, but nothing like this. But they have a different water company.

If it stays like this for another week... they are getting another phone call.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Well, we've had a sort of off and on drizzle for a couple of hours, but nothing measurable. Hope springs eternal, though.
Deb

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hooray!!!! about 1/2 an inch @ my house so far. it is still drizzling so hopefully we'll get more...

keonikale, where do you live in the Columbia area? Chapin, Irmo or the wonderful place of my birth, L-town (lexington)?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I live off Barr Road in Lexington now. My wife and I lived in Columbia for a year after we got married, but we just moved here in January. I lived for 24 years over in Irmo though, actually, between Irmo and White Rock (though with the way Irmo is growing, it really *will* be Irmo soon).

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

really!? i lived in vista springs @ the intersection of old cherokee and old chapin. i moved last year. how is it up there?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Let's put it this way. Over at Pilgrim Church on Highway 6, it's going to be 5 lanes very soon. I immagine you remember the dam construction over Lake Murray. They've now got the 4 main lanes nearly completed all the way into Irmo. It stretches all the way over the dam into downtown Lexington. It's been a royal mess, but once complete should alleviate some traffic. It's horrid on weekends.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

It seems like they've been doing that construction for over a decade .. evertime I go to visit my brother and his wife who live on River Road, I had to go through that mess. Nice to know that next time it will be finished!

X

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

wow i can only imagine how that must be. im glad i moved when i did! but here really isnt all that much better with all the construction on 278 and buckwalter parkway. im not sure if you know of those, but maybe someone from the HHI area can attest to the horrible traffic with tourist season starting and the construction on 2 major roads here. do the roads still go behind the dam or 2 on top like it used to be, and two more on the bottom?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

There really are a lot of similarities between Lexington and Bluffton.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah they are very similar, but my experience is that lexington was much friendlier. i really miss that place. it also seemed more like a down home small southern town than here. i liked is slower pace as oppoed to the quick commercial lifestyle led by so many here, or at least the part of bluffton i live in. maybe im just homesick... theres no place like home.

PS this is only my experience from the high school and the part of the town that i've experienced. im not saying bluffton is a bad place per say.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

You guys are just killing time waiting for rain, right? ;->

Why does the tv weather guy smile so big as he announces...."and no rain in the forecast for the rest of the week!"
It was bad before, but with these 80+ degree days, well - there's just not enough daylight to get everything enough water. Even my "bog garden" is gasping. !!

deb

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Wait til they put you on water hours 6am til 10 am twice a week. We have been through some major drought in the past few years, but this is the earliest I remember.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I can't remember a dry April/May like this before.

Good news is that NOAA's drought forecast is calling for a wetter June. So hopefully we'll see some relief next month. Might be good for getting rid of that summer heat too. Bad thing is, it's likely to be in the form of T-Storms.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Farmerdill: Fortunately, we aren't on restrictions like that yet. we should be because we definitely have drought conditions.

Keonikale: That's good news about June. This beggar won't be a chooser! :) I'll take thunderstorms.

Deb

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Me too.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh I'll take the rain that way as well. I just hate the wind and the chance of hail. Guess I better getting a lightning rod for my rain dance and maybe a hard hat, LOL. I remember the hail we had May 2002 - worst I'd ever seen here.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

me three!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah i vaguely remember that. i was in the 4th grade, so i didnt really care about the plants... i just liked the excitement. have yall ever noticed that right after a hailstorm is smells like turpentine outside?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

It's ironic, but that was the day I first flew in a plane... ever! The hail stopped right before we left for the airport that morning. I was on my way to Hawaii (my last state to visit to make it all 50). In fact, I don't seem to recall even having a bad thunderstorm for months before that day.

Even though I wasn't very superstitious, I thought it was an bad omen at the time. Little did I know how much I'd have missed had I not gone. My love of all things green is a direct result of that first trip. Now I go back yearly with my DW and we even run a small business relating to the islands (photography, guidebooks, etc). Funny how things work out.
