Hello again everyone! I have been posting a few pictures now and then (on the daily thread) of the occupants of a few of the houses in my yard. I got some better ones of my resident chickadees and thought it would be fun to share bird house pictures in a thread. Here is one of the chickadees from this morning.
show us your bird house pictures!
Very nice pics Lily! I love the first chickadee/winterberry shot!!
Thanks Pell. Have you had any action in any of your houses yet? This evening while out watering I nabbed a picture of one of the house wrens that have been filling the yard with their beautiful bubbling song. This has to be my favorite bird song of all - it takes me right back to my childhood when I hear it! It was getting dark so the picture isn't that clear. Its so good to have them back. Now if I get some bluebirds back I will REALLY be a happy camper!
I would love to see any pictures anyone else has of their bird house denizens!
Lily, these are positively delightful!! Sadly, I don't have any bird houses - next year, though, I sure as heck will!!!!
I haven't any bird houses here, but back in 1998 I spent a year in British Columbia in Canada, and our neighbours over there had a bird house attached to a Ponderosa Pine.
This little Pygmy Nuthatch tooking a liking to the bird house, but he wasn't satisfied with using the front door provided. He set to work to excavate his own back door into the bird house.
Here he is posed above his almost completed back door.
Thanks Murmur - they sure are a lot of fun in the spring. Between the browsing looky-loos and the nesting preparations, they keep the yard filled with activity!
That is SO interesting kennedy, I have never heard of anything like that. I do have two houses with holes that were chewed to make them larger but no secret back entrances. That is one smart bird - if a predator peeks in they have a second way out. I wonder if all Pygmy nuthatches do this or if that one was just an Einstein of the bird world.
Yesterday I had an unexpected day off because the school I work in had to close to get some emergency plumbing work done. (no water - no school) That was such good luck as yesterday the chickadees left the nest! I missed the actual leaving but got some great shots of the babies peeking out of the box. I also got some shots of baby Carolina Wrens.

How adorable! Your pics are amazing!!!!
Thanks Pell, I was SO glad I was home to see it all! Today I have "empty nest syndrome" lol.
Yes! Great pics :)
I wonder how many times I saw "awwwwwww" while looking at your photos - they are absolutely precious!
A little related whining, if I may. Have you noticed that some (non-bird) people don't recognize the distinction between a bird house and a bird feeder? I have had this happen several times, including one recently where I asked a woman guest if she had a bird house, and she looked at my bird feeder, and said that she had a bird house like that one. I guess it just shows how we pay attention to what matters to us, and not much attention to what doesn't. In that vein, this woman told me she was going to a Minnesota Wild game, and I didn't even know what sport it was for sure. Different strokes for different folks!
Susan in Minneapolis
Wow Susan, I haven't run across that! That is pretty surprising.
I have a little postscript to the chickadee family saga. There has been no activity at the box so I opened it and took the little nest out. I thought you all might like to see it. It was totally made of soft green moss and lined with the silkiest ragdoll cat hair lol! What a great nest to grow up in.
I'm wondering if there was only one chick because I have seen the baby following the parent all around the yard and learning lessons. It is so cute - yesterday they visited the meal worm feeder and the baby copies everything the parent does. First, hop onto the dish, them swish the oatmeal filler around with your beak until you find the worm. The baby had lots of fun flinging oatmeal all over the place! Obviously a very gifted child!!

Awww, what a cutie! I put LOADS of my persians cat hair out in tree's& bushes and almost all of it is gone!
Again, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!
Delightful shots, Lily!
Now the mockingbird babies are making lots of raucous noise. The nest is pretty high up in my Hawthorn tree so I probably won't get any peeks until they leave. I have to work for the next three days so there's a good chance I will miss them. But in the meantime, here is one of the parents with a juicy meal on the way to feed the babies.

Birhouse photo's...have a couple to share..
1st. one, just prior to my father passing away he made a birdhouse from rough wood for me to paint for him..before he could pick it up he passed on, so it's now in my garden ...
I cut out several houses and painted them with a winter scene and gave them as Christmas gifts last year..of course I kept one for myself..
maybe someone could help me out..took photo's from my same 'my pictures' could you tell me why one has the writing and one does not..thank you kindly...maybe you can't teach old dog new tricks..lol
The DG software automatically adds a copyright notice to the top left corner of the pic, if you set it to do so. It shows up on both the pics, but the one of them is so small that the copyright text just about fills the pic.
To remove it, go to 'My Info' in the green bar near the top of the page, select 'Manage your preferences', and from there, click on 'Copyrights'. Or (I think!) you can go straight there by clicking this link:
http://davesgarden.com/prefs/copyright.php
Then tick 'No Method. If you don't want copyright messages at all, just check this box and click submit'.
Then re-upload the pic!

Wonderful..just tried it -..I'll try a few photo's later..not sure if this process has to be done each time a photo is being added to the post..I'll find that out shortly..thanks you
Betty, you are incredibly talented! I'm so sorry your father didn't get to enjoy his finished product.
