Originated Threads Not Watched; Also Losing Narrative

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

There are a couple of strange things happening now.

1. It used to be that when I originated a thread it was automatically put on my "watch" list. Now it's not. One can either watch all threads to which one's posted or not. The automatic option for originated threads is gone. Can this be fixed?

2. When I was posting to a thread I could go to a picture, click on it, look at the picture and then, by using my "back" button, go back to what I was writing and continue. Now when I do that I lose all of my narrative and I have to start over. This needs to be fixed. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who thinks, "Now, how big was that again?" or "What color was that flower exactly?"

HELP!!!!!

I have the same problem when it comes to the pics. I sometimes need to look at it again while typing but when I do i lose all that I type. It's a real pain to have to type all of it again. lol

I've had that problem ever since I joined, so it's nothing new. The only solution is to open a second window and look at the picture in that one.

The first issue is the result of a change Dave made a week or so ago.

If you choose to "watch" threads auomatically (by checking the box on your member page) you will watch any/all threads you post to as well as those you start.

If you choose to not check this box, you will have to manually choose to "watch" any threads you want to watch - including those you create.

I strongly urge everyone to keep this box checked, especially if you post to BugFiles or PlantFiles. Those features instantly launch "picture" threads when you submit images to them - if you are not set up to automatically "watch" threads, you're not going to be notified when someone (including an editor) comments on your image.

The second issue - the "back" browser works for me. I can type something, and hit "back" and then "forward" again, and my text is still there. Most likely, it's a setting within your browser, not anything we can control here. Opening a second window can help (I currently have 7 windows running, if that gives you any insight as to how I use my browser ;o)

It's too bad we lost the option to automatically watch threads we originated without also watching all other threads. I think that was a step back.

As to the second issue, I was able to look at pictures, click on my "back" button and continue my narrative until a short while ago. I didn't have to hit "forward" after clicking on "back." Since I haven't changed any settings in my browser I don't see how that can be the problem. As you can see, I'm not the only one who has this issue. If you have any suggestions as to where to look to solve this I'd appreciate them.

I'm having the same problem and also haven't changed any settings on my browser--it used to be that it was unpredictable, sometime what I'd been typing would still be there when I went back and sometimes it wouldn't, but lately it's never there. What I've done to get around it is before I click on the picture that I want to look at again, I copy all the text that I typed, then I go look at the picture and when I come back if my message is gone I just paste it back in, that way I don't lose my thoughts.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Hmmm.

I use Firefox, and I just typed a test message here, clicked on another tab on the site, did a few other things, then used my browser's "back" button to find my message was still here without any problems.

I re-ran the same test with IE - no such luck. But I don't use IE except on rare occasions.

Thought I was the only one. Sometimes I reply to a thread with all kinds of "wise musings".
Attempt to add a picture and while I am browsing loose everything. By then I am so disgusted that I just sign-off. Not satisfied that it is something I have done. If there are settings that I should use, please let me know what they are. Still love Dave's Garden more than anything else on the entire www. Other than e-mail with my children that are not geographically close to me.

I don't have problems adding pics to my posts, if you're having trouble doing that I think it might be a problem with your computer. The problem I'm having which I think is the same thing that's happening to Marilyn is that when you're typing a response, then you decide you want to view the person's picture one last time to make sure you have some detail in your comment correct, so you click on their picture to view it, then when you hit the back button to come back to the screen where your message was it's gone.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Exactly, ecrane. It's not when I add a picture, it's when I want to LOOK at a picture that's already been posted to the thread. And I know I can copy my text or open a new browser window before I look at a picture so that I don't lose my text. However, I don't always remember to do that. Besides, it was always working before, so how could I have known? Can Dave have someone take a look at this tomorrow?

Want to share that I was so anxious t download the new IE....it still has soooo many bugs associated with it. Even major companies won't use it until all the problems have been worked out. I had my computer tech come over and leave IE on the computer, but set up firefox......no problems like you are describing. It is not a big deal to switch to Firefox anyway.....most people have given up on IE for a while....

Glad I didn't download the new IE. I sure wish Dave would weigh in on why some of us can no longer look at pictures without losing the narrative we're composing.

Marilyn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

that has happened just a couple of times to me....don't know why.....maybe it is no the new IE afterall.....

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, I'm not on the new IE and it's happening to me as well as other people.

Marilyn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

that is what I meant....it is happening to people who haven't downloaded the new IE.....so there is a problem...

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Yep. And no one seems to know what to do about it. Can't understand it.

I don't have a problem but if I did I would use the contact us button at the bottom of the page. Terry got back to me the same day I had a problem.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the kind words ;o) We try really hard to respond to the messages sent through the Contact Us link as soon as possible...but this isn't something I can fix. Actually, I'm not sure there's anything we *can* fix - I understand some of you are experiencing a frustrating problem, but I'm not sure it's anything from our site that's causing it.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Does Dave know about this? If so, what does he have to say?

Marilyn

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Marilyn, he's been extremely busy this week. I doubt he's seen it yet, but when he does, I'm sure he'll pop in with a note ;o)

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Good - I hope he has an answer.
