new growth pictures for confused new gardeners?

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

I e-mailed this to the "contact us" page, and got a quick response from Terry (thanks!), who kindly suggested i post it here.
(people here are so helpful!)

Hi...
i am a newbie here - and pretty much at gardening too - so who am i to talk, but something that i think would be really helpful is if more people posted pictures of what the "new growth" stage of a plant looks like on the PlantFiles pages. I saw one for tarragon, and i was delighted to realize that mine was indeed coming back this year - it looks just like the picture! But it seems like there aren't too many of these. It also might help with some of the ID Forum's "Is this a weed or something i planted" questions.
Just a thought, and it seems like a good time of year for it, since so many mysterious little green things are appearing everywhere...

thanks!

Sounds like a great idea to me, too!

I agree, it's an excellent idea. I will carry my camera around this spring and get some early photos of the plants. Thanks for the reminder Amy.

It is a great suggestion, I have been tring to post picutres of seeds and seedlings I am starting this year in plant files.
We all seem to get caught but in showing off our beautiful blooms and forget that others might enjoy seeing how they start out.

Wow, what a really great idea. You're right, we need to see pictures in all stages of growth. I'll keep it in mind now that it's spring and there are pictures I can take in early growth stages..

Thank you for thinking of the idea.

I would have been so grateful for a place like this in the winter....I planted the entire garden from seed and forgot what i even planted.....as they began to grow, I had no idea what was growing until they started blooming.....a long long wait....I really thought that i would remember....I didn't!!!!!! I still don't know which seed in particular i used for the carnations or the giant stock....never will know again...the carnations are beautiful right now, but i won't be repeating .....don't know where i got the seed...they are very fragrant.

PS....let's all start taking pictures of plants when they are just coming up or of ones coming back out of the ground....

I have done one batch for a bunch of my flowers and will do more as others come up. Some plants of the same species come up as different colors that might be useful for ID's.

but still, more pictures here wouldn't hurt either... : )

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I can talk better with pictures....so we can still post small plants from seed as they develop...

I talked with Dave about this some time ago. I asked if it would be overkill to post pictures of seedlings in two week intervals. He also thought it would be a good idea. I take picture of mostly veggies, tomatoes, cabbage, etc. I also think it would be great if everyone who posts pictures in the Plantfiles would do this.

Whoa there..(LOL) I am too computer challenged to post anything in plantfiles....i uploaded one picture after the plant file was set up....then when I found a rare moth, I had to get another DGer to do it.....but I will learn if that is what we are going to do ......just let us know.....I grow from seed in the fall...everything that goes down in the garden to cut.....lots of perennials and annuals go in the ground in the fall...
In the summer down at the garden I just throw zinnias, cosmos, plant corms of glads, etc.....
I LOVE TO GROW FROM SEED

Gail, if you can post a photo to a thread, you can post a photo to PF... just click on the link at the bottom of the PF page for adding a photo. Your new pic won't show up right away, since I think admin gives them a quick check for accuracy (or at least to make sure it's not a photo of your Aunt Ethel in the bath, uploaded in error).

I've posted a few photos this week of new spring sprouts from perennials, and I'm trying to get some seedling pictures added also. When possible, I'm adding the photo to the more general PF entry for the species -- for example, the photo of WS seedlings of Campanula carpatica 'Blue Clips' went on the C. carpatica pag, not onto the specific page for the 'Blue Clips' cultivar. I figure that makes the image easier to find, and I don't imagine that the different cultivars look any different at this stage.

OK Critter...your instructions are always soooo clear....don't have time this week, but I am going to make a concentrated effort to upload pics to the plant files next week...I always have a camera ready to go...because i can't talk without pictures!!! thanks so much.

critter - I took some on April 20th and again today, of emerging Asiatic lily foliage but they were purchased as a mix so where would the photos go?

pirl, thanks, I still get my Asiatic & Oriental lily leaves mixed up.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OKAAY....

I will be the first to ask then. WHAT is the difference between those two types of Lilies??? If it has been explained somewhere else, I probably did not see it.
It can't be all that long an explanation.

Thanks, Gita

The Oriental lily have the fragrance, thats the big difference for me. Other then that I like and grow them both.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Me, too!

(No Oriental lilies in this photo from last year but a few will be there this year and a lot more are in another garden)
