Tokoro, SO glad to have you! Welcome, welcome, welcome. Feel free to jump in to any of our conversations - - - as you can see, we toss quite a bit around! :-)
Well guys, I got about half of my seed packets done yesterday. I hope to finish the rest up today. Then, I've got to move on to Silkies' swap and get those done! lol The rain certainly as forced me inside here lately. More rain due in over the next two days. I think we are literally in the 100-year flood. I have a 92 year old aunt who swears that in her lifetime it has never rained this much this early in the year! And trust me, she would remember. She is much sharper than I am and witty as can be. Maybe I'll make it to 92 and have wild tales to tell like she has! LOL
Catch you guys later this afternoon - - - I'm off to work on my seed packets! :-)
Belinda
Seed Swap for Hummingbird Lovers
Well pas s that rain this away. Even after the disaster from the hail and rains we are in serious drought here. The tree s are dropping flower buids and the rest just hanging wiltedly ( wonder if thats a word) on the limbs.
I nee d to burn thre e tree s thta came down from hail, tornadoe storms and ca'nt cuz of burn restrictions and espcially with the wildwife still burnign inGa everybody here really watching around there areas.
My last fial is Monday , so after that I can really concentrate on what I gonna send and decorating.
I finally buy a feeder to help out the hummers and I was thinking man oh man I must have bunche s of them cuz I was havign to fil the feeder everyday. Dahhhhhhhhhh notice d last night waterign it got a leak at the seam and is just drip drip driping all the hummer sauce onthe groudn for the ants. : (
Hi everyone, I am wishing for a perfect gardening weekend for us all this week! We deserve it!
I haven't been able to get out much yet either, since it has been raining here too. We will all do a rain dance for starlight.
I wanted to let everyone know that Home Depot has a "garden club" and if you sign up for it online, they send you freebies. I signed up a couple of years ago and got a hat, trowel and coupon for a free herb. Last week they started sending coupons to my email. One was a buy one get one free for a shrub! I had to make a trip tonight to town (30 minute drive) and got 2 evergreens for the price of one. Nice!
Tena, It's exciting to be starting a new garden- not to mention work, which I did 3 years ago. The things I put in then are really starting to look good and making a difference. My neighbor thinks I have the "touch" but we all know it is just sweat and hard work and a few seeds. If you need some seeds of regular stuff I am sure I can help out.
Robin, I would love to see a pic of your garden. I am one of those people who needs to "see" things for it to sink in. ;)
Starlight, what are you studying? My daughter is also having finals next week. She is an older than average student since she "left home" the day she turned 18 to make her fortune. She then returned home and is now on the Dean's List. I am really proud of her for all she has accomplished.
Belinda, How are your babies doing?
Cyndie
Cyndeee: thanks for the offer but I have a shoe box full of seeds that I need to get into the ground!! I can't think of anything else that I want....need....er...I bet I'll find something though!!! LOL!
Here's a link to pics of my yard/ house in progress

I'll be working on my seeds this weekend.
Sorry I haven't had a chance to get back with you on the tripod, it may be awhile before I can get back to working on it. My daughter was in a car accident yesterday morning. She is ok, Lots of scrapes and bruises, a fractured big toe on her left foot and a slight sprang to her right ankle. My blazer, however, is totaled. It was raining and slippery, the other driver lost control and went sideways into my daughters lane, she hit him broadside. His car is folded in half and the Blazer has no front end left. The other driver is ok, too. he had a cut on his head from crawling out of his car and a bruised lung. Both were very, very lucky. The police siad if she had been two seconds slower she would have missed him, but he would have gone into a rock embankment and probably would have been killed instantly.
The area where it happened was right in front of a rock quarry that has been sighted many times for the diesel fuel and oil stuff they leave on the road. This may have played a part in the accident also.
We are down to one vehicle beause the engine went out on the jeep last week. I get to play taxi for everyone. This includes driving in one direction 22 miles and back then another direction 35 miles and back and then another for 28 miles and back. I'm pooped just thinking about all the driving I will be doing, not to mention the gas prices. And it's a full size truck I have to use. All the driving, taking care of the house and everyone plus work is going to leave me little time for much else until we get money from the insurance to get another vehicle.
I guess I'm just venting and needed to bend an ear. Thanks everyone for listening.
Robin
Oh Robin! I am so, so, sorry to hear of the accident. I am thankful that no one was seriously injured as it sounds like it could have been really bad. :( I will pray for a speedy recovery for your family. :-) Been there, done that with the one vehicle thing, due to an accident. It is tough. We too live in the boonies, and the nearest anything is 35 miles. It is great as long as I don't have to leave everyday! lol I hope things get better for you soon.
Cyndie, thanks so much for asking about the babies. They are doing wonderful. Growing like weeds, and getting new feathers everyday. I so enjoy them. They are sort of my sanity around here. lol I too signed up for the Home Depot club. I've enjoyed getting email coupons to use soon. Thanks for sharing.
The weather here is so awful!!!!!!!!!! We had a storm blow through with winds in excess of 85+mph that tore up everything in its path, including our storage building, barns, coops, oak trees, mesquite trees..............nightmare to think about cleaning up. I am praying for some sun tomorrow so that I can get busy. Starlight, I will GLADLY send you ALL my rain from here on out for a while. We had 6 1/2 inches in one afternoon. Gggeeeeeezzzzzzeeeeeee, enough already! I have high hopes of sun all weekend - - -I've got helpers lined up to help clean up, pick up and rebuild........so maybe the weather will cooperate???? :) (thanks for letting me vent!)
Beth, I received your BE yesterday. Great job. I loved the hummer pic. Sheran, you want to come help me with mine?????? I've got everything here you need.........all I'm missing is time! lol Please????
Tena, GREAT job on your gardens, thank you for sharing with all of us.
I hope to talk to you guys soon, but it may be Monday before I have time to check back in. I will have a houseful of company/helpers arriving, starting at 2:00 pm today. Hope all of you have a very good weekend, FULL of nice planting weather! :-)
ttfn,
Belinda
***here is a pic of my ROAD***** (won't be going anywhere anytime soon, huh?)
Hello,
I am sorry to say but I am going to have to bow out... My son is going to have Knee surgery on Monday and between that and work I am afraid I won't have time... I am sorry... I will do next one...
Susan
belinda i got my first visiter today but it wasn't a hummer, lol. ok i need yur help it is red from head to sholders, rest is brown with some gray and black on wings. it was about 3" high standing on the hummer feeder. it was drinking the necter. it had a finch shaped beak. what could it be i have never seen one before. i tried to take a pic but it heard the beeps on my camera phone and flew. will try to get a pic if he comes back
silkie
Susan, I am so sorry to hear of your son's surgery. I hope he has a speedy recovery. I think we are all feeling a bit "crunched" for time right now. Too much to do and not enough of us to get things done.
Hey Silkie (GF!) - - - I love a good bird challenge. After re-reading your description over and over, then putting it onto paper, I think that you may have seen a Cassin's Finch, a male species. Wish I could have been there to seen it. :) I love birds of all types. I try to identify each one that comes up to all my feeders. Such fun! Thanks for sharing with me!
Well, without Susan, that leaves us one more spot to fill............any takers???? :-) Have a great Monday!
Belinda
oh i wish you could have seen it GF!!! it was so gorgous and such a site to see!! i was so excited, lol. he hasn't come back yet i sure hope he does!
thank you!! it is either that or a purple finch, i'm not sure. we have golden finches here i think it is but i have never in my life seen any but yellow ones till he came to visit the hummer feeder that day. sure wish my buddy comes back it was the sweetest thing to see out my kitchen window but i'm affraid i scared it.
on the other side of the house we have visiting chickadees, a red cardnal, blue jays and robins. i'm working on the hummer section on the side my little friend came to visit. i can't wait to see it all when it is done!!
silkie
Robin - Happy Birthday!!!!!!
I hope things are going much better since your daughter's car accident and I hope you had a lovely birthday despite the events of this past week!
I hope some plants are blooming in your yard to make you smile! Wishing that butterflies and hummingbirds find your garden and make it their home!! :-)
Silkie, what fun bird watching is~~~~~ I do luv it!!! Snap a pic if you get a chance to, we would all love to see him!
Robin, Happy Late Birthday! So sorry I missed your bday..............haven't been online since last Friday! The weather killed our phone lines and electricity for days.........yes, days. UGH. Talk about disaster! The sun is shining today and I'm about to head out and work in my weeds while the soil is so wet! That pic of your blazer scares me to death. Your daughter was very fortunate.
How is everyone doing on their seed packets? I have finished mine up and hoping to find a great gift to go along with them. Wish each of you a great day!
Belinda
this am you' ll never believe what i saw!! i went to the back door to see if dh had come back yet from the po and i saw something move on the ground figured it was a robin wasn't paying attention. looked back out ect a few times for the blazer.
then i actually looked i saw a few movements again. low and behold i found my friend sitting about 4ft from the stairs!! not only that but it was 2 pairs of them digging on the bank for food!!!!! oh, what a grand site to see. i believe they are the cassin's finch after seeing them a little bit more.
yesterday dh saw one at the hummer feeder again! my buddy brought back friends i was so tickled!! all this time i've been watching the feeder and they are eating off the bank, rotfl, i didn't know he was still visiting let alone had friends too. i will try to take pics tomarrow if they are out again mabe i can sneak some pics with my digital. belinda what kinds of things do they eat? i asumed bugs but they do go once in awhile to the hummer feeder. i'd love to put out some special ones for them too.
silkie
Oh HOW exciting silkie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it! Let me tell you that they LOVE millet seed and black oil sunflower seed. You will be amazed at how much they can eat! :-) What a treat! You might also try thistle seed, too. My American Goldfinches LOVE thistle. I have a feeder that has 22 pegs on it, and it is nothing for each peg to have a bird on it! Grap a pic if you ever have the chance - - - I would love to see them!
I was out mowing the yard a little bit ago and heard a little chirp by the birdbath. I glanced over and saw a pair of Red-Winged Cowbirds at the sunflower feeder. It is WAY early for them to be here - - - maybe that means that our summer won't be as HOT as predicted???? ha,ha right??? It's a hope on my part for sure.
Looks like everyone has been super busy lately. No postings of any type. I understand completely how we all stay so busy right now. LOTS to do outside. Well, I'm back to working in the yard gals. Wish each of you a fantastic weekend and I'll touch base with you all on Monday! Silkie, I'll be watching for that pic!
Belinda :-)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BELINDA!!!!
Hope your day is relaxing, blessed with many family & friends, and may your gardens bloom like never before! Wishing you hummers and butterflies in abundance!
Wishing you the very best today and always! ~Becky~
Hi All,
I know I had to drop out for family reason as life does this at times but I wanted to wish you all a HAPPY MOTHERS DAY and as I can see now I missed a few birthdays as well so HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALLLLLL.
HUGS,
Susan
Happy Birthday, Belinda! And Happy Mother's Day to everyone.
May you all get to spend a sunny day in your Garden.
Cyndie
Thanks guys - - - how SWEET of all of you to notice!!!! We won't mention HOW many candles were on the cake!!!!!!!!!! lolololololol I had a wonderful day, I got to spend time with family and friends, followed by a wonderful dinner out and a movie...........although I had to laugh at my DH's choice of movies!!!! LOLOL He took me to the new Anthony Hopkins movie (I'm a huge fan), Fracture. The movie was about a husband who found out his wife was having an affair, shot her in the face, and then almost got away with it! YEP............he swore he had no idea the story of the movie, just that Anthony Hopkins was in it. It provided a good laugh for both of us. :-)
I hope everyone had a very nice Mother's Day, and got to spend it the way they wanted to. :) My hummer count is up to 14 now! I have managed to luer in 14 hummers, so far. My firecracker bush has just started blooming, and boy they LOVE it! And, as for an update on my broken wing hummer - - - I have officially nursed her back to health and turned her loose this morning. :-) Such a great feeling.
How is everyone coming along on your seed packets? Good, I hope...........we have two more weeks and counting before our deadline fast approaches! And, fast it is. I'm headed back outside to do some more de-weeding in the garden. Wish each of you a fabulous day!
Belinda
Bumpity - bump - bump.....................BUMP, BUMP!
Don't know if anybody is aroudn her e this morning, but if somebody is, can ya all tell me about how much ya puttign in the envelope for return postage?
Finally got through finals and most of the damge to my hoem repaired and just rememebred this trade and am headign to the post offic e with mine in just a little bit. Wanna make sure I got it all right.
Starlight, I know postage has gone up and the envelopes might be a little heavier than paper. I think I will include $3 just to be on the safe side. When you go to the Post Office to mail your envelope out, you can tell by how much it costs to mail out. It will be at least that much to return. cyndie
Thanks Cyndie.. Sent evrythign in a small boix priority to make sur eit gets there and quickly. With the wildfires covering such a big area, it takign forver for mail this way. Then stuffed a one dollar and 4 of the .41 cent stamps in there. Hopefully that will be enough. If to then I'll just send Belinda some extra stamps.
Just hope I did it right. Sent 15 decorated seed envelopes. and a little somethign extra with each seed package. Sent a 8 x 11 bubbler with a label and the stamps inside and a special gift.
Sounds great .!!! It sounds like you put a lot of thought into it. How did your finals go?
I am so sorry to hear about the wildfires. We have had fire warnings here, too, which alternates with too much rain and flooding. The weather is too weird. We even had frost warnings last night and the same tonight. But Thursday and Friday will climb into the upper 80's in some areas. I am going crazy trying to decide when to plant my tomatoes! LOL. You can tell by the decrease in posts that everyone is in high gardening gear.
I will be sending my BE out tomorrow. I will post what it cost for those that haven't sent theirs yet.
belinda,
please let me know if i owe ya postage as i sent before the change and i never thought about them not being back till after it went into effect. if i do please d-mail me and we'll square it up somewhere.
if i don't answer right quick i'm tending to my 5 year old as he fell on glass yesterday with his hand and now has 5 stitches. it has been a long few days with 2 different hospitals and doc visits as he did a number on his hand. so far everything is ok but he has to revisit a hand surgeon on fri please pray he doesn't need surgery to reattache the tendons.
talk soon,
silkie
Sorry to hear about your little boy, silkie. I hope everything works out okay. I will stick some extra change in so you are covered. Sounds like you have enough to deal with. Cyndie
I realize I am probably talking to myself at this time of night, but I actually remembered to take a picture of some of my flowers. It has rained for so many days I forgot what the sun looked like. My Heuchera are almost ready to bloom so I will have a little something for the hummingbirds. I have only seen scouts out here. At work they fight over the Azaleas.
LOl... Nope your not talkign to yourself. I am usually up all night. Haven't got out of the nightnight study habit yet.
Finals went great. Sweated World Lit II. Had to write 7 essay paper s in under hours and as ya cna tel from my typing I not the best.
Silkie. Sure sorry to hear about your little one. it so hard when they small and get hurt and then tryign to keep them from hurtign the injury even more. pray that all goe s well and nothign srious is damaged.
Nice pic Cyndie. haven't seen to many hummingbirds around lately. Think mayeb the smoke in the air keepign them away, not sure. I was so excite d I had put soem feeders up to help suppliment with the flowers and got them at the Family Dollar store for thre e bucks each.
For ahiel I wsa thinking I must have soem thirsty hummers and they comign when I not here cuz the feeders were empting otu liek crazy, then the other day just happene d to look up at the right angle and seen the darn feeders leak. The only thign I feeding is sugar water to the ants . Now I gotta go buy some new ones.
Hope everybody's gardens comign along good.
When a all get your s done, I got plenty of weeds in my yard yet. LOL
Thanks Cyndie for helping out by answering the postage questions.........I really appreciate it! :-) Seems like postage JUST went up, doesn't it???? Nice pic........I love this time of the year when everything is starting t bloom and perk up so nicely. Gorgeous..........makes me smile thinking about it.
starlight, I know you are glad finals are over and sounds like you aced them! Great job~!
silkie, how is your little boy???? Please do let me know how the surgeon visit goes, and I will add him to our church prayer list. Keep us all posted. As for the return postage, I'm sure what you send will work out just fine. If not, I'll cover it and we can exchange postage on the next swap! :-) Sound good to you??? Thanks for thinking of that. I appreciate it.
One more week until our deadline nears...........how is everyone doing? I have mine all finished up and ready to go, and I found the neatest gift to share. Perfect for the hummer swap. I rarely find "good" stuff - - - my patience for shopping is pitiful, therefore I normally am a grab and go type of shopper. Basic stuff, and I'm on to my next task. DH is still shocked to this day with my "lack of shopping" desires. LOL
Have a terrific day!
Belinda :-)
awe thanks ya all, ur to sweet!! belinda, i think i sent ya 2 if i remember right from what dh said he put in when he got home from the po that day. so ya can figure out the difference and then short it when ya send yours to me for the other swap or i can send ya extra goodies if ya let me know what ya'd like or i can send loose postage back. whatever ya'd like hun if fine by me like i said we can square it somewhere's just let me know it's not a prob. i was to excited to get it done and sent early since it takes a bit to get there so i never thought about that when i sent it.
hunter is doing lots better today, i'm so happy. he is up and full of energy. he don't have to wear his splint starting today now if i can just keep him away from the water so his stitches don't get wet we might be good, lol. he keeps trying to tell me mom, i can do this or that myself which is good but i'm very squeemish he is going to split them back open. i will keep ya posted how he is doing and what the doc says on fri.
oh, we didn't know what he fell on but he said glass so we went out to look in the yard yesterday you'll never guess what we found. although he didn't see it he was right. we found antiques mostly broken out there. aparently there used to be an outhouse there and they filled it and covered it over and moved when it needed it and kept doing it. we found pink carnival glass dishes broke out there all kinds of plates, glasses, and such. aparently the stuff is there from the 20's to the 50's. i had some glass totally intact there was 2 old heinz ketchup bottles from 49 and 50, beyer asprin bottle, some sort of perfume bottle with stuff in it, bottom half of a roughe container from the 20's, glass canning lid, baby shoe made of leather to match the one i found out last year, parts of old baseballs, breck shampoo bottle, marbles and silver spoons, rotfl, hunter hit a jackpot for antiques we never knew was there. what a way to find it poor little guy.
all we can figure is when we had it escavated 2 years ago it unburried alot of it and due to the the moveing, heavy rain and bad winter it surfaced it all cause in 4 years we have never seen any of it. i can't believe i never found any gardening, rotfl.
silkie
sending mine tomorrow.
btw, did you keep any of the carnival glass? I would love to have some for some stepping stones I am making for my garden.
rotfl ya know i never thought of doing anything like that with the glass. we just come in from digging out there. we got 3 #7 priority boxes full of glass and some cans. 2 boxes are non broken items and then the other is broken glass. we are gonna clean it up see what all is there. i haven't found all the pieces but there is also china too. i'll let ya know what all goods i find.
silkie
Silkie, so glad to hear that Hunter is doing better! What a treat to find all those wonderful antiques - - - I love digging through old stuff like that. Makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. Be sure to let us know what all you were able to save..........how fun! :-) Make yourself a mosaic garden table, or take some clay pots and mosaic them with the broken pieces to have a few special containers. I could share an entire list of things to use the pieces for! :0)
I will let you guys know as your be's roll in - - - I am posting that information at the top by your name. How is everyone's gardens coming along? I would love to know how your gardens are shapening up! :) Mine still have a bit to go. I have weed city in a couple of them; and my new ones need a nice border of some type. Soon, I hope to have pics to share with all of you. By July, everything should be in full bloom. I can't wait! :-) Have a great day!
Belinda
Belinda, Just so everyone will have a comparison, my BE cost $2.39 to mail, but that included delivery confirmation.
I will post pictures of my veggie garden as soon as I have something to take pictures of. LOL It has been cold at night so I haven't been able to put out tomatoes or peppers yet. I think I am taking the leap this weekend, tho. It is going to be 80 degrees here tomorrow. A hummingbird was at my feeder this morning.
Have a wonderful day.
I will be sending my envelope out tomorrow. Please let me know when you get it! Thanks! :-) ~Becky~
Sent mine in Saturday 5/26 - confirmation #0307 0020 0003 8473 4069. DH mailed it priority so's not to hold everybody up, but sending it back first class will be fine.
Belinda, are you going to be affected by new postage rates for BE's - http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/724966/ ? If so, you can keep my extra postage to cover any of the others who may need it.
I hope everyone had as pretty a day as we did in Maryland today. I haven't posted much now that all my wintersowing containers are clammering "Plant me Plant me - yesterday!" But it's been great to be in the company of others who understand prioritizing gardening. Y'all stay healthy and well this summer.
Karen
