Who makes the best raincoat?

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Everytime I walk outside in the rain, with my less-than-waterproof jacket on, I keep saying, "I'm getting a real rain coat before the next storm." Feeding & caring for horses in the rain is inevitable, and I must learn to be prepared or get used to being wet.

So who makes the best raincoat? I'm not talking ponchos or designer "full body length trenchcoats", either. I'm looking for the perfect raincoat - Tie-down hood that stays on my head in the wind, fully waterproof, with elastic sleeve cuffs, because velcro is a hay-magnet.

Anybody have good raincoat advice? help please! =)

TIA,
Jennifer

I don't have a raincoat, but I have been very impressed with Land's End's other offerings in terms of style, quality and durability. They're made for the long haul.

They have this Gore-Tex Rain Slicker - http://www.landsend.com/pp/LongGORETEXRainSlicker-68660_137550_-1.html?sid=6795129026199139010&CM_MERCH=SRCH It does have Velcro, but that could be replaced with snaps easily enough. I can believe you about the hay magnets! LOL They're definitely cat hair magnets.

I've been very pleased with the hooded GoreTex waterproof jacket I bought from L.L. Bean, I forget how many years ago, for a hiking trip. Despite numerous machine-washes, journeys to different parts of the world, and regular exposure to Canadian weather, it shows no sign of wearing out.

I have mostly Sierra Designs outerwear. I have a coat made of Gore-tex with a zip in fleece, as well as a separate raincoat. Both of them are waterproof but breathable. It's expensive though. My parents live near the outlet so I was able to get a good price.

Rain?
what is rain?
We have Sonoran drought or Monsoons with 4 inches in an hour.
But I love a nice walk in a light, steady downpour. I'd probably have to wear a plastic bag since I don't own a raincoat!!!!!
Came from San Francisco though. I wore a full length yellow slicker.... perfect.

jennifer - i work for the post office and i buy alot of stuff from an outfit named skaggs. try www.skaggspostal.com i think non postal employees can buy from them. they should have a phone nub for you to call. since they sell rain gear for postal carriers i would think that they have good stuff.

ooh.. that land's end version is nice, but sure is pricey.. geez... it'd have to last a really long time at that price.. that's more than some horse stuff I buy.. wow.

skaggs.. must look & check out.

And yes, it rains here ...

angelsong, i was going to say london fog, but after reading the posts, realised you need one that is made with gore tex........ as my husband always tells me: are you rich enough to keep buying and replacing cheap "whatevers"? buy a good one once that will last a long time......

I had a nylon anorak by K-Way years ago that I just loved, don't know if they're still in business, but I would love to have another.

Once you decide on a style and features you like, I'd try finding a used Land's End or L.L. Bean raincoat on eBay or another source for second-hand or seconds.

I went to four stores locally yesterday searching for a rain coat. None even exist on the shelves here... Saw a friend out, and asked her where they all hide. Her answer was, "it doesn't rain here enough for them to sell." I said, "yeah. tell me that again this week during the rainstorms when I have to go feed the horses in the rain."...yuck!

still shopping...

It used to be London Fog. the best by far. But like so many companies, the cut their quality and glided along on their name. Consumer's Union finally came out with a report which rated it pretty mediocre. But that was some time ago so the report would not be valid now.
