Mother Of Gardens

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Did anyone catch the program last night on PBS about the origin of flowers in the world? It was nature I think. I was astounded that most of all the flowers in the world today came out a very small region of China. There was a botanist in the early 1900's that brought over 1500 species of plants that are the common plants that you see in gardens today.

Oh no, I missed it! Do you think it will be on again? I'll bet it was so interesting.

Well I got it wrong it was Nova and the program was called First Flower. I don't know if it will air again.

This is the PBS link to the program.
Well that didn't work.:(

And if that don't work here is the link to the program through its listing (click on Nova).

Snipe, I caught that Nova program last nite. Fascinating. What really got me is that the plant DNA they were working with showed that cannabis (pot) was most closely related to strawberries.
I'm a big strawberry grower and my youngest likes to grow pot. (Don't tell anybody I said that) Who knows, I might try smoking strawberry leaves!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Well blmlb it will probably be a little tough growing strawberries if you start smoking all the leaves. :)

snipe, I'll try to stick with the berries and ignore the leaves, but it really is interesting to know that pot's closest realtive is my favorite fruit.

Does seem strange doesn't it. I guess the most amazing thing to me is that almost all the flowering plants in the world came from the same place. I did notice though that the statement made was this area was protected from the ice age while the rest of the world was wiped out by moving glaciers.
