A reminder: The cut-off date for the Spring Swap is rapidly approaching: April 23rd.
Anyone who wants to participate needs to d-mail me with their mailing address before that date.
US addresses only, sorry. Everyone is welcome, regardless of what they have to trade now, as long as they have at least one Hoya!
Spring Hoya Swap
you say that, but I know yer gonna be bummed if I send you a snippet of kentiana, DS-70, or lacunosa.
"ah jeez, I got a walmart hoya"
You would be surprised how many people DON'T get 'Walmart Hoyas'...!!!!!
Anybody want to send me Walmart Hoyas go right ahead...I don't expect to receive anything wildly new and rare...but I do hope to make friends, share in the 'brotherhood' of our passion. I just received some cuttings of H. lacunosa from a dear friend, Diane Landry of this forum: I have never seen the leaves on a lacunosa quite like these, covered with silver flecks...a real treat. And, yes...she got it at a Lowes and yes it is a 'lacunosa' AND it is a great clone!!! I feel VERY lucky!!
hehehehe
then I'm trading with you!!!!
Carol, I have been keeping an eye out for that speckeled lacunosa. EA is selling it on the east coast but I have yet to hear any reports of it on the west coast.
Mark, which hoya bloom is pictured at the top? Thanks, -joanne
It's either benquetensis or bordenii, I always confuse them. I'll look it up.
Looks like it could even be sp. IML 0831. GREAT flower!!
Joann...The 'speckled' H. lacunosa (ssp. pallidaflora) cuttings arrived yesterday...they are gorgeous!!! Keep your eyes peeled...Diann got them in LA...so they must be creeping west!

Mark, I was hoping it was one of them. I ordered both from DL this time. -j
Carol, thanks for the spelling lesson :~) I sure hope they make it here. We have had lots of lacunosa hit the box stores recently but no 'speckled' ones., May be before the swap.......
God bless, -joanne
Joanne,
I have bought two of them (the lacunosa pallidaflora), one for me, one for a friend. I'm in Montana, so I would think you should be getting them soon. If you want me to grab one next time I see it, let me know. We have had two in a row with 2 shipments. Supposed to be getting one this week or next in HD. They really are pretty neat looking.

Sara, Thank you for the offer, I may just have you do that if we don't see any soon. My "problem" ( and I say that with a heart full of love) is my 89 year old grandmother is staying with me for a while and she doesn't travel well. I need to drive one hour north and one hour south to hit the stores that may have some and I can't be doing that for a few more weeks. And to top that off, I have to pay Mr. Liddle for the soon to arrive cuttings (YEA!). HOWEVER, I do want that one :~)
BTW, I have not had much luck with lacunosa in the past and even gave several away for fear of killing them but I couldn't resist a big EA basket a couple of months ago. I have it hanging about 3 feet above my heater in the green room in front of a w/sw window and it is doing GREAT! New growth everywhere and looks healthy. Now, maybe it will bloom? Perhaps next year. I want to smell the flowers.
-joanne
Joanne, I hear you. I have to pay for my cuttings too. If you would rather have cuttings, I would gladly send some to you. I have to water all of my EA plants strictly from the bottom, or no luck. D-mail if interested, wouldn't want to hijack mark's swap thread.....sorry all!
My grandmother who also was in her late 80's passed last December, and I would gladly forgo plants to be able to have her stay with me, so please let me know if I can be of any help to you with cuttings.
Sara
I'm guessing H. benquetensis for the plant in the photo above? Carol, I photographed this one growing near your kitchen door- which is it?
AH...it IS H. sp. Philippines IML 0831. I have yet to flower H. benguetensis or H. bordenii....and this one blooms young and NON-stop!!! with the same strappy long leaves.
Mark and Carol, I was so hoping that it would be benquetensis or bordenii since I did get those from DL, but guess what? I got sp. IML 0831 too! Yea! Can ya' tell I'm on a hoya high right now : ~ ) -joanne
Last chance! The names and addresses for swap partners will be sent out Monday (the 23rd), so speak now or go without more Hoyas.
This is such a great swapping method! I would love to be in, but the only hoyas that are long enough to cut are the "ordinary" ones, and I'd hate to do that to someone. But can someone tell me so that I know for next year's swap, do we send just one cutting of any size to our mystery partner, or is there a set size? Thanks, and I hope all of you get some nice surprises :-)
Gabi
The reason, as mentioned, for the swap is to share and to have fun!!! There are no rules as to how many cuts to send, what size or what species. This is supposed to be FUN!!! I look forward to it every year and I am 99% certain I will receive cuttings of hoyas I already have (don't mean to sound arrogant...I just have a lot of hoyas!!) and I cherish them!! It WILL be a different clone of something I already have...it will be good. I know there are some who will not participate because they don't want to get the more common hoyas.... Well, I still get asked for H. compacta, H. kerrii and some of the H. pubicalyx cultivars so my questions is...what is a common hoya? Common where? To whom?
This year will be different in that - I believe - we all agreed NOT to brag about WHO sent what, but we can brag endlessly about WHAT was sent!!!!
Ok Ok....you convinced me Carol!! I have some less common hoyas that I just realized I can cut from. Going to email Mark...hope it's not too late! FUN :-)
Gabi
I'm not going to join the swap this time - although last time was LOADS of fun! I have received from several generous members an "embarassment of hoyas," to replace those I lost last winter. So, I have several duplicates that I want to share - if any of you have any hoyas that you have your heart set on, and it's one of my duplicates, I want to do a one-way swap - not that I mind "common" hoyas (I agree with Carol's perspective), it's just that I've been so blessed by all of you and I don't want to be a hoya hog! I can make a list of those that I received duplicates of, if anyone is interested.
Karen
P.S. Hope this is ok with those who sent me cuttings......
If it's not too late, I'll join. I just checked and I think I have some pretty good ones to send.
Stephanie/PlantMom
Bring on those names :)
Also, for those new to shipping cuttings would someone mind posting a few options?
I personally have only shipped a time or two but here's what I did.
Wrap moist paper around cut end and rubberband a bag or wrap saran-wrap around the wet paper.
Place cuttings into a USPS Priority box (flat rate for under 1lb. = $4.05), and add paper or peanuts to protect from bumps in the road.
Ship and cross fingers.
How about when receiving cuts? What do you all do?
MM -
I soak the cuttings I am going to send in water with a drop or two of Hormex or Superthrive....for a couple of hours. Then I shake all the water off well, roll or pack them in newspaper and stuff into a box so they won't rattle around. I pack them losely so that they are firmly in the paper but there IS air. When they arrive I soak for a couple of hours in the same kind of water.
I do what Carol does and so far no complaints on either end.
Looking forward to this swap!
:) Kim
All the Swap recipient's info. has been sent out! Have fun everyone.
Thanks so much for organizing this Mark!
Sistah K pay it forward:-).
Blessings,
Awanda
Hey Awanda! How are you feeling?
Do we only send one cutting or more? Could we send a small plant that is rooted? I never did this before so any help would be more then welcomed...
Susan
Susan, you send what you want to send. If you have lots and it makes you feel good to send more than one, do it. If you only have one to send that is just fine. There is no set ammount, just what you want to give freely to another hoya lover. Sometimes a heartwarming story can make a carnosa more special than a rare/hard to find hoya. It is just a way for us hoya crazy people to 'bond' with other hoya crazy people. Just have fun with it! God bless, -joanne
Hi Mark, I feel like I have electricity running through my legs all the time:-). I guess this is how the bionic woman felt. Thanks for asking:-).
Blessings,
Awanda
Look out for fembots, Awanda!
Mark, I think it is only Austin Powers who had to worry about them ... unless Awanda has suddenly turned into one ... and then ... look out Mr. Powers!!! I am getting a visual of Awanda in a pink teddy turning cartwheels ...
I hope you are feeling better Awanda!!!
Ann
Mark, thank you so much for putting this together. I am really excited about this! Carol, thanks for talking me into it. I managed to find some goodies that I hope my "pal" likes. I'll be sending the package out today so that it hopefully makes it before the weekend (I don't want to take the chance of it sitting in a dark box all weekend in a truck or post office). Oh, and thanks for the sending tips Carol...my cuttings are now soaking in a nice bath of water and some Eleanor's (I don't have ST or Hormex). Happy swapping everyone!!
Gabi
Mark you and the Doc are hilarious! Hey Doc how did you know my teddy is pink, you been peeking in windows:-).
Blessings,
Awanda
Teee, Heee ... Awanda ... lucky guess! Meanwhile ... how those electric thingies working so far? I hope you are recovering quickly!
Ann
I was not allowed to have a TV as a child (it was a religious thing), so I was denied access to such cultural artifacts as the Bionic Woman. I have, however, been attempting to capture those moments I missed as a child - I'm working very hard at it (lots of TV watching and video game playing - LOL). Apparently, I need to go rent some Bionic Woman videos so I can see what else I missed. Evil fembots, eh?! I always root for the "bad" chicks - I find them more appealing than the goodie-two-shoes that always "win"! Go evil fembots ...
Perhaps we can get ourselves some evil hoyabots ... imagine ... a plant that takes over your house while you sleep and forces you to do its bidding ... hmmm....I think I have some evil hoyabots - ha
Ann
Hummm I wonder if I turn the current up higher, I can be more bionic or maybe I'll just walk funny:-). Ann it's doing okay, but not taking away all of the pain.
Blessings,
Awanda
Awanda, will it possibly take away all of the pain eventually?
