I know several of you are widely experienced with day lilies. I have five Stella D' (whatever the name is - you know, the yellow everblooming one). Anyway, i want to move them. They are just sending out shoots now. I read somewhere that day lilies are good to plant amongst bearded iris.
when would be a good time to do this? Any special treatment?
The plants are 3 years old this year. Can I divide them to make more?
Daylilies - question
Yes, you can move them and yes, you can divide them. They're shorter so I guess you'd want them in front of the irises.
Oro - even I have those.
Pirl, since those are both spreaders how far apart would you space those?
I keep irises in beds of their own: same with daylilies (for the most part).
If I had to mix the two I'd probably allow a foot in between the irises and daylilies.
No problem there - three of my irises rotted this spring. Never even saw them bloom - yes, I did plant them exactly as directed - but this wierd spring resulted in a lot of surface water which I tried to drain. Most irises made it.
Seandor, Daylilies are one of the toughest most indestructable plants around. Very hard to hurt them.
I try to keep my daylilies and iris separated. The daylilies want a little more water than the iris can handle. It's hard to give the daylilies enough water without overwatering the iris and causing them to rot.
Japaneese or Siberian iris would do better with daylilies. I find my daylilies love water almost as much as they do.
I'd agree with Dave and Joan. Irises are best off in a spot where you can control the water and where they have a lot of drainage.
Just curious - are those Stella D' oro daylillies the longest and best blooming daylillies?? That was just something I have heard.
Probably the longest bloom, but there are a number of others that come close. I'm not crazy about yellow - too many yellow flowers in my garden. I like the non-yellow daylilies.
I don't have and won't have Stella. She leaves a bare spot because she blooms before the others and after they're done. Like Victor, enough of the yellows!
Okay so then which day lillies might you suggest that are easy to get (popular) and that bloom for a long time? I would like to try something new....I have 2 of the Stella's already.....
I just count on three weeks from any daylily. If it goes to four or five weeks it's only a very few blossoms at a time and, to me, just not worth the extra expense. I'll check my records tomorrow to see if I have enough starting and ending dates to recommend any but generally a mix of early, midseason and late daylilies will be the answer.
Oh sure pirl - I should have known your answer...hehehe. Okay think of something for me please if you don't mind.
I defer to Pirl. She has WAY more than I do.
Dawn - do you have a favorite nursery in Canada? I could look at their list and we could work from there.
Victor - my insanity began late in life.
Pirl, mine began at conception.
Dawn, did you have any luck with the Clematis nurseries shipping to CA?
Dawn - you need a friend way upstate at the Canadian line so I can send plants up there and you can "import" them from the friend.
Purple Pawprint started blooming for me on June 24th and never stopped until July 21st. She is small like stella but such a nice little plant!

Pandora's Box is a good bloomer. Custard Candy is another one that is beautiful and smells lovely. CC is the first daylily I ever owned and the one that got me started on my addiction.

Pixie those are gorgeous pics.....love the pink one.
Victor I did look and look but didn't find anything on the internet the night I looked....no one ships to Canada. I decided to end my search and just buy locally. Thanks for asking.
Pirl I don't have a favourite nursery here. The nurseries we have are smaller ones - not well known or anything. I often just buy from plants from Garden Centres as well.
Dawn ~ Here's a few place's in Canada for daylilies:

Dawn - I'll ask my DG friend in BC the name of the nursery she uses but she won't be awake for a few more hours.
I have stella - well, because I was a newbie, and the plants were cheap and reblooming. someday, I will probably replace them with something reblooming and pink. Currently, I have few yellow flowers - most are blues, pinks, and purples.
Is there a pink daylily that is both a rebloomer and fragrant?
I have about 2,000 and none re-bloom for me.
2,000 pinks?????
yes....On and On http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&mainPage=prod2working&ItemId=47667&PrevMainPage=textsearchresults&scChannel=Text%20Search&SearchText=daylily&OfferCode=T1H
I bought this one..I don't know if it's (Sue Rothbauer) fragrant: http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&mainPage=prod2working&ItemId=48506&PrevMainPage=textsearchresults&scChannel=Text%20Search&SearchText=daylily&OfferCode=T1H

Oh Victor! 2,000 assorted colors, heights, shapes, etc.
I've had Becky Lynn, Chorus Line, Fuchsia Dream for many years and never did they rebloom for me. All in full sun with plenty of water.
Chorus Line reblooms here, but not great....I don't own the others. I believe Al or Dave owns Becky Lynn....might ask them.
I sent some to a friend in zone 9 to see what happens.
Well, if I have to choose, I will take fragrance over reblooming :-)
Wow Seador really? I think I would pick reblooming. I love colour so much! Although it is nice when they smell nice too.
I am guessing that you must pick a lot of your flowers to bring indoors for vases?
'Happy Returns' is a softer yellow than Stella and it reblooms nicely. I finally got rid of my Stella's last year. I've had them for years but came to not like them but I couldn't stand the idea of removing anything. I finally got past that when I started dividing a lot of my daylilies and needed the space.
'Rosy Returns' is also a good rebloomer. It is a subtle corally pink color. I love it.
I agree w/plantaholic2...Rosy Returns is a nice rebloomer and one of the first to poke its head out of the ground here. It already has and was promptly covered w/snow!!
Thanks for the great ideas...I am going to research some of those DL's later today.
Yes, Dawn, I do pick a lot of flowers for inside the house. I hate the heat! Here in Western Massachusetts it gets very hot and muggy in the summer. I am indoors before 10 am. So, if I want to enjoy the flowers, I bring them inside.
But I don't think daylilies make great cut flowers . . . so maybe rebloomers are the way to go.
I will probably get rid of the Stella - we have a large terrace on our street in desperate need of landscaping, so some of us are planning to put in flower gardens - I can move extras from my yard there.
No, daylilies aren't good for cutting. I don't have Becky Lynn. Most of my DL are unnamed.
I wouldn't be too hard on stella d'oro. They have to be pretty good to have become so omnipresent.
