Oh, yeah, and bring in more wood:)
The Storm of the Century
Fire Island has been evacuated and there will be no ferry service there after 9 AM. This is only the second time I remember hearing that in the last 15 years. Severe flooding is expected. It's a very good time to be across from the water, as we are, and not living in a waterfront home.
I just heard that pirl...it also said this is the worst storm Maine has seen since 1991
August of '91 was hurricane Bob. We had the plumber coming to put in a new vanity and toilet so I had to get the wallpapering done. No electric, no showers, great fun! I did manage to finish the job.
OK - NOW I'm starting to get a little bit scared.
Made me nervous when they said "possible hurricane winds".
Probably a great night to go out to dinner - no crowds! Our favorite spot is on the water and has their own generator so I have something to look forward to tonight.
Anyone else noticing odd backyard bird traffic today? I have had 3-4x the usual number of birds at my feeders all morning. I wonder if this could be related to the storm??
The miserable crows were frantic earlier but now all is calm.........eerie.
kd, everytime a storm is due I get twice as many birds at my feeder. They know it's coming and it's a dosey!!
Pixie,
I feel for you. I can't believe our forecast. Here in the southern Mtns of NC were are under a Winter storm warning for 3to 5 inches of snow later today into Monday morning. Nothing Like you guys are forecast to get but hey, I'm in the SOUTH this isn't supose to happen. ecspecialy in April!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To funny!!Love your stone house kd!! My fireplace is built like that.
I love rock walls and kdcon - yours is especially nice. Some of the rain is going sidways here in Bridgeport. I need to go out to the library for a new book on CD for my commute and to Trader Joe's for the eggs I forgot yesterday. Maybe I'll wait for up and down rain.
Ok..it's started. Raining at 3 and now snow/sleet mix. I cooked up 2lbs. of bacon for BLT's and the lasanga is done, candle's are out in various places around the house so we're ready to go!
How's everyone else doing???
Just rain - and lots of it. Gardens look like swamps.
We had a period of very heavy wet snow for several hours this afternoon, followed by sleet, now all heavy drenching rain. My SO and I went out to clear the drain-ends from our gutters. Like you, Seandor, my beds all look like swamps. With the forecast over the next week I doubt I'll be gardening for several weeks, what with all the wet. We live adjacent to wetlands and a very HIGH stream. I'm wondering if we'll see the road flooded overnight.
Lots and lots of rain here too.
kdcon, What is in your yard, an obstacle course?
Very pretty house & garden!
Started rain then changed to snow at 2:30. Still snowing now, starting to build, 3" and tree limbs hanging, temp has dropped from 38 at 2:30 to 33 at 5:30. Looking at the radar we have 3 or 4 hrs. to go before it changes to rain, hope it does.
Seandor, you may want to trade those pansies in for some rice plugs.
YankeeCat, all I have here is gravel and rocks so I build all rock planters or dig out and replace w/ good soil. all the rocks I use come from here on the property. Here is a nice place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or evening cocktail.
Pixie, chicken is done, movies ready, generator takes 15 seconds to switch over, gonna take the dogs out for a run ( they run, I walk ). kdccon
Southerner checking in. Here in the NC mountains it started snowing around 2:00 pm with winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60. About 2 inches of snow so far. It's near blizzard conditions here folks, so much for spring !!!!!!!!
Cool! Service dogs or show dogs?
Hi, we had snowfall most of the day (6"), then sleet and now rain. The steaks are on and my DBF is drinking gin ever since the grandboys we were babysitting left to go home! No wind so far. The snow appears to be melting. We could end up with a ton of slush in the driveway since it's not snowblowerable (!). But all is well here now. Those steaks smell awfully good!!
kdcon, what breeds does your wife train in Agility! BTW, your garden shots are beautiful.
Here on the Cape, the winds are presently from the SE, gusting about 20 MPH and rising, and moving E; eventually we'll have a nor'easter. No snow, but a real wintery look to the landscape! It's always hard to believe that it was sunny not that long ago.
I've had to content myself with moving my WS jugs under my potting bench, and resetting the braces for my new small Japanese Maples that I took off last week!
All is well down here, on Long Island. More wind than rain all day long.
Great house kdcon! Good luck with the storm. Here, my wife has me jumping through the hoops.
Pixie - your title reminds me of a Monty Python line " it was the worst miscarriage of justice - since Tuesday. I know, no one else gets it, but it's funny.
Monty Python just went too fast for most of us. They're good to watch over and over.
I just borrowed my neighbor's sump pump and started pumping the basement out. When I have mine emptied - I'll go over to his house and set up the pump for him and pump him out. His boiler sits lower than mine - so he is the critical one - I am the one that panics because I'm not used to pumping basements.
kdcon - have you seen cat agility tournaments? http://cats.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=cats&zu=http://www.catagility.com/
The winds picked up in the last 20 minutes and now are at 45 MPH along with light rain. We're supposed to get heavier winds and more rain all night long.
As we say in Texas, God love your hearts. Will be watching the next few days and pray that all of you are well.
LouC
Thanks Lou.
Just rain and really really high winds today. DH works at the airport - stayed late at work because of all the flights that were delayed. Still not home btw. Boston Marathon tomorrow - no records broken, I bet, unless the wind is a tail wind!
xxxx, Carrie
I'm really hoping we don't lose power. The sump pump is struggling to drain the water flowing through my basement that is 6 inches deep right now and the evacuation alarms keep going off all round me. My sister's basement is filled to within 2 feet of the first floor (she lives within 100 feet of a major river) and she is staying with us tonight. This is one hell of a storm!
I haven't gone down to the basement - we have a French drain that has always worked (famous last words) LOL.
xx, C
I love Monty Python - Run away!!!
Wow! That's so scary. Hope it stops filling soon!! Please send my support to your sister-she must be so stressed. We have lots of water that comes THROUGH our basement (1850 house). It has a concrete trench that I call the Grand Canal out to PVC pipes out to a ditch below the house. Guess they decided not to fight it. So far it works like a champ every spring, but I'll be watching closely. Pouring outside now.
