Good Night and Good Luck
The Storm of the Century
Do we have to wait another century for a similar thread??
No just another "Nor'Easter"
Could I encourage you all to bring both your wisdom and your wit over to Andy's Daily Musings thread, also in this forum?

over and out,
xxxx, Carrie
Andy likes his thread to be more garden musings. Chatter should probably go on the coffee thread. Now if we only had a thread for the wisdom....
It might be very short.
One for tomfoolery.
I think we turn them all into threads for tomfoolery (Great word isn't it? I wonder if Tom's siblings are jealous of his notoriety. He is such a scallywag!)
Yes, it's right there with chicanery.
How about shenanigans?
xxx, Carrie
Are you a whippersnapper?
Only when I'm cracking wise.
*Sigh....* And all of these lovely, useful words will be forgotten by the time our kids run the zoo. I mean it. My kids' vocabulary is minuter than mine was at their ages, I'm sure of it. My older daughter is 16. I remember the very day I first heard the word reticence, because I was 16 and it was so unusual for me to hear a word I'd never heard before.

Now Carrie is sad and Victor is just being persnicketty
Well people are reluctant to use that word. As for the kids - yes - especially with all this texting and shorthand junk. The language will be a series of grunts soon. Full circle - back to the cavemen. Not the sophisticated cavemen from Geico though.
LOL Victor. I usually just say LOL when I'm smiling or amused (she said ruefully), but this time I was literally laughing out loud!!!!!
Do you think there will be a whole generation of 2hot4U and luvya 4eva and TTYL, or will they skip straight to grunts? Actually, one can communicate quite effectively and efficaciously with ones mouth full. As long as there are ad companies, there will be sophisticates, but they will still be cavemen!
xxxx, Carrie ::::-(
I get to grade their papers - these are college students - but honestly, I have to remind them that future job promotions may be on the line. All things being equal, the person who can communicate effectively - in person and in writing - is likely to get the promotion and the pay raise. - until it is put in stark terms like that, many of the students don't understand why we fuss about stuff like grammar, etc.
Effective communication, especially written, seems to be a dying 'art'. I had to re-write many proposals and other documents written by PhD's at Columbia.
I work with people who are nonverbal and until the have a vehicle to communicate, their behaviors are extreme. I think wars and violence often are results of miscommunication. Oh boy, hang on! (Thought you'd like my pessimistic thoughts to start the day-sorry!)
But mostly, I couldn't live without poetry and beautifully written literature. I hope this isn't an endangered species that will go with global warming. We have been reading Shakepeare's sonnets on my orchid watering day here. He certainly had a great time playing with semantics.
Hi boojum,
Well, my sweetie reads aloud to me :-) In fact, the day I met him, he read poetry to me . . . boy, was I hooked!
Nothing like a poet to sweep a woman off her feet.
Same here. I water, he reads.
My car reads to me as I drive. I'd marry him - but he is too cold in the winter.
Should I make a crack about what's under the hood???
Or about its performance??
Wow, you are sharp, Victor!
My DH wooed me with racy e.e. cummings - until then, I had never heard it spoken!
xxx, Carrie
e.e. cummings is racy? All I ever heard about was the stuff with the ant - it was an ant, right? That jumped on the keys of the typewriter? Or do I have him mixed up with someone else?
That explains the lower case thing - an ant couldn't possible hold down the shift key and type.
The lower case thing is all I remember about him. I heard the shift key on his typewriter was missing.
Just curious - are we going for a record for the longest thread on DG - I think this response makes it 389 or so . . .
Thanks for the compliment, Seandor. Forgot to mention it as I got carried away with ee. Yes, the length of this thread prompted me to suggest ending it out of sympathy to dial-ups. I then started the 'Curious' thread to see how many there are - apparently not many!
No, I think there are longer threads, in fact I'm sure there are.
e.e. cummings is definitely racy! "I like your body when it's with my body" "your electric fuzz" if I say any more I'll probably get censored!
I think you're thinking of Archie and Mehitabel, by Dom Marquis, not cummings.
xxx,
Carrie
Oh, thanks you are right! One was a cat and the other was an ant - or was it a flea?
Don't mention it. But you should check out e.e. cummings' racy poetry - it's not G-rated.
xxx, Carrie
but is it g-rated?
should e.e. have been charged with a capital offense???
O sweet spontaneous
earth how often have
the
doting
fingers of
prurient philosophers pinched
and
poked
thee
,has the naughty thumb
of science prodded
thy
beauty. how
often have religions taken
thee upon their scraggy knees
squeezing and
buffeting thee that thou mightest conceive
gods
(but
true
to the incomparable
couch of death thy
rhythmic
lover
thou answerest
them only with
spring)
Splendid!
And that's G-rated e.e. cummmings. He ranges all the way to X.
Which I can't post.
xxx, Carrie
I thought I'd start a new thread as this one is so lonnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggg..... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/724848/ - I hope you will all follow
