The Storm of the Century

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The storm of the Century hasn't hit yet.....it's due Sunday night/Monday. The weatherman is predicting the biggest Nor' Easter we have seen in several years. We got a slight taste on a smaller scale last night/early this morning.

I woke to a beautiful sight, but no power!

The trees were coated and the birds dotted it with little black spots.

Waiting for me to clean off the birdfeeder.

The tree's branch's are weighted down by the heavy wet snow. It's no wonder we lost power!

Luckily I forced some bulbs in the cellar, or I'd have no color but white!

This makes me happy to see something other than white, white, white and more white!

Wow, pixie, that's some impressive snow. We got ice, then snow, then rain. There's a thin coaoting of snow on everything today. This spring reminds me of the spring of 1987, which I remember because it was the year that we bought our first home. The day after we moved in (in May), we got a HUGE snowstorm and lost power for 5 days. We had no wood for the stove, nothing - brrr! Hopefully, this next week will be the last of this winter-like weather.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh my friend my heart goes to you!!!!! wow... so much of it...

I just got rain in here... tons of rain... today is dry and cold... and gloomy... the town has already done street clean up... I am seriously praying for divine intervention against that storm... I feel sorry for the runners of the Boston Marathon... I don't remember ever having it this cold for the marathon... it is always nice with tons of tulips and daffodils!!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I have totally stipped you of any 5a status.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Oh Pixie! This not a sight you want to see out your window in the middle of April! We were lucky and only got around 3/4 inch of rain.(ducks loved it, wish it would just rain on them!) Our forecast is Sunday-Tuesday rain, rain, rain with lots of wind) They usually can't forecast what is going on the day of the forecast so we'll see what we get. Here's to hoping the weatherman are wrong about the end of the weekend!(I know doubtful, but we can hope!)
I counted 10 Juncos feeding in my yard this morning-keep telling them to head north so the warm weather will come!

Pixie, I think the only thing we have going for us is that nothing much has broken dormancy so we don't have anything to lose. I think this is going to be a classic three season year in Maine.

The estate I work at has a bulb tour scheduled in 5 weeks and the tulips haven't even shown their little tips yet.

The Brugmansia's in bloom, though.

This is crazy! It's May in two weeks!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

May? I usually get the garden ready in May, could be June this year.

The storm thats coming is bringing 60+ mile an hour winds w/drenching rain/sleet/mix. They are expecting 25ft. waves on the coast....be safe watersedge!! Inland can expect flooding in the streams and rivers and basements better have sub-pumps!

I had juncos, yellow finch's, sparrows, cardinals, pigeons,chick-a-dees and even blackbirds waiting for me to come remove the snow off the feeder this morning! We also had 2 different types of woodpeckers at the suet feeders this morning!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

OMG! I think it is Margarita time in Maine - lots and lots of Margaritas! Hang in there - (like you could go anywhere in that weather).

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes . . . its hard to complain when pixie is getting serious snowfall. Still . . . it's hard not to whine about this lousy spring. I would pick this year to get serious about gardening! lol

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Hey Al! No stipping other members.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dang! I must have used up all my - not q o_ s but in betweens.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

So Al...what zone are you putting me in? It should be the crazy zone, it's going up to 45-48F today. On the bright side, that will help the snow melt beofre the next one hits.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I can't imagine having snow in April. As it is, I'll have a lake in my backyard. Hopefully it won't make too much of a mess. My friend lives on a canal off the Great South Bay - I'm sure she's worried about flooding.

Alfred, ME(Zone 4a)

Hey Pixie, I have a photo just like that, Redwings in the tree just waiting for breakfast. I feel bad for the Robins that have been here for 2 wks., They have even been in the feeder this week and I have never seen a Robin in the feeder. Going to put out a lot of extra feed today, on the ground also so everyone gets a good meal before the storm. I have to fill the feeders just before dark also every day for the Flying Squirrels as they come to it at nite and clean it out. kdcon

Pix, you must feel like you're stuck in a 30's movie. seriously, I know you're used to dealing with this stuff but this is too much!! unless the storm changes it's path, it's supposed to miss us on it's way to you. We'll probably get some snow over the next few days, and some wind. no warmup until Friday.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow! Pixie - they are great photographs even if none of us wants snow in April.

Loved the Margarita comment!

Anita - we call the lake that forms at the bottom of our driveway "Lake Southold" but you'll have to use "Lake Anita" since Lake Ronkonkoma has been taken!

Tomorrow we'll be experiencing 50 MPH winds. Poor Harry (our dog) may be flying to Al's house.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

We were just watching a friend for Harry too - a little yorkie. Those winds are annoying that's for sure. We get what I call a garbage wind - it always blows garbage into our lawn - it's out of the east.(ducking)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You better duck!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

It's not from you - more from the old grocery store across the street.

Pixie - I think you might be in 3c then,

I went to a neighbor's garden to check one of her plants, as she asked me to do, and was shocked at the amount of trash I saw. Obviously a few of the younger generation couldn't give a hoot, or a bit of respect, for the property of others. Sure, it can be cleaned up in 15 minutes but it makes me wonder what their homes are like.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yankee ~ Margarita's huh?? I don't drink, but I may just take it up if this crap doesn't stop!!

kdcon ~ Ready for the next one?? I guess we will only see a few inches of snow before the sleet/rain mix starts. Then it will be pure rain with high winds. Catskills, Vermont, and the Mt. area's of N.H. and Maine will get all snow and they are counting in feet, not inches!!
My poor Brother!!!!! He just got 18" 10 days ago, then 12" this past week and now he's looking at FEET!!!

Gram, I feel like we live in the twillight zone right now. It's crazy weather!! It has been like a rollercoaster here....warm, cold, snow, sleet, more snow, than warm again. I want to get off the ride....I'm getting motion sickness!

Now a little salt to the wound.....DD called from Tampa, Fl. she just HAD to tell me it's hitting 86 today. I almost hung up on her as she laughed hysterically!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Where does bro live?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Seandor ~ He lives in the Western Mountains of Maine, up near Rangley.....ski country, but he doesn't ski!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Small world, after all. My girlfriend has family with a home on Rangley Lake.

Alfred, ME(Zone 4a)

I'm ready, Bring it on, I'll stand in the window and laugh at all the wind, rain and snow. Tried crying last time, Laid right down on the floor on my back, kicking and screaming for 2 minutes, got up looked out and it was still snowing, so that did not work. This time I will laugh. kdcon

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Maybe doing it with a pitcher of margaritas in your hand would make it stop. Even if it didn't stop - you could drink the margaritas.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

You have to ignore it. pretend it's not there for long enough and eventually it goes away.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I am living in total denial - I worked on cleaning the gardens. Transplanted the daylilies, etc. don't have guts enough to plant the pansies - but after this storm pansies and sweet peas have to go in the ground!

Alfred, ME(Zone 4a)

I'm going to put a roasting chicken in the oven this afternoon, take a nap, walk the dogs and fill 45 pots/baskets with the Impatiens & Petunias I've been growing. Let er blow, kdcon

Northeast Harbor, ME

I'm checking my supply of gas for the generator. Might even start 'er up! wooo hoo!!!

I'm starting to see a bunch of out of state plates up here already. Too bad for those tourists. I hope they're buying a lot of those margueritas, though.

For me, I'll just make a meatloaf, stick with the Ancient Bottle, and praise the higher powers for Netflix.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I've got the fireplace stacked w/wood, jugs of water ready and movies too. Won't do us a bit of good if we lose the power but until we do I believe it's movie time!
