cottage names

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

twofew, you could name yours Lanternwick, or Candlewick. I'm thinking about Brigid's Nest for mine. Or the "old" nickname for Brigid is Bride or Bridey -- maybe Bridey's Nest. (NOT Bride's Nest!) Or Bridey's Roost has more of a Texas feel.

Or I could go with Lily -- Lily Pad?

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I like Lily's Pad :)

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

brigidlily
I like Lilypad also, did you think of that because of the steppingstones in your herb garden?

Just on a thought I went to theasaures. com and put in herb ... here are the few words I liked that popped up:
Zest, scent, seasoning, spice, spirit.

Now the challanage would be to make a name out of those. :o)

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

toofew, that would fit, wouldn't it? But Lily was a dog I used to have, which is behind the name. Unfortunately it is not her pad, but that's life, I guess. I do have 6 lilypads in the pond so far.

Brigid Seasoning -- sounds like I'm marinating my pekingese... or like she's marinating the tomatoes...

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

How about Scent Haven

Here ya go, Joe....

HEY! Thanks Pagancat! :))) I like that, actually. Very much. :) May I save it to my hard drive?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

It's definitely a Carolina House now! Although I think that "Duke Blue" would be a better color.... ;-)

Morrinsville ~Waikat, New Zealand

That reminds me of a place I saw in Rarotonga ,Cook islands last year .Painted blue , they then decorated it with painted flowers ! Now that would make the neighbours happy ! Somehow ,it was just right in its happy setting of a laid-back lifestyle.

Emelle, that is beautiful. :) Actually, I have thought of doing quilt square designs on each side of the house too ... My poor neighbors.

Adelaide, Australia(Zone 10a)

Hi all, I'm brand new to DG and I live in Australia. I used to live in Dallas, TX for 8 years and was a keen gardener there. Still am obviously. Just bought a house and slowly creating a cottage garden. Would love to here from anyone and especially Oz folk. Anyway, thoughts about naming cottages; We have friends who have a large property and they simply combined their first names of Bruce and Delia to Brudel. Just perfect and that's how we all refer to them now!! Anyway, thinking of doing the same thing. Any thoughts??

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I think it's great. I could name mine Branmalu (though I won't) for Brigid, Angus, Maggie, and Lulu (one dog, three cats) OR Something Balm (their initials). HMMMM! That's a thought! I have bee balm and lemon balm growing. Hmmm... Or maybe just Balm.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

"Balmy Day"... LOL, that fits toofew's cottage on the lake also!

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

It's "Lamb", too...

Lamb Home?
Lamb Pasture?
Lamb Knoll?
Lamb's End?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Lamb's End? Is it a butcher shop too? ;-)

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

LOL, no, just a play on 'Lands End'.

Hey, how about "Lambs Quarters"???

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Maybe I'll call it Gilead. Then we'll know there IS b.a.l.m. in Gilead.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Lamb's Quarters! That's a pot herb to some, a weed to others... not unlike bee balm LOL.... Plus, it's a cute pun.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Bridgi, I like the name Gilead.
If you are religious:
From the Scriptures, "Gilead" means hill of testimony or mound of witness.
Is your place hilly? It would fit.

Also, from the Book Gilead (which I haven't read), I found this tidbit:
****And he tells a story of the sacred bonds between fathers and sons, which are tested in his tender and strained relationship with his namesake, John Ames Boughton, his best friend's wayward son.

This is also the tale of another remarkable vision--not a corporeal vision of God but the vision of life as a wondrously strange creation. It tells how wisdom was forged in Ames's soul during his solitary life, and how history lives through generations, pervasively present even when betrayed and forgotten.****

I like the part about how "history lives through the generations". That would work for my cottage since we are the 3rd generation to own it ... but I won't use it, its yours.
Also, the part "life as a wondrously strange creation." How true is that! [grin]

Ok, I'm done with my web surfing for today. :o)

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Ah, twofew, the only hills around my place are the ones the fire ants make! They are, as it happens, a wondrously strange creation...

It's on the list!

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

The Ant Hill?

Ah, that might too prophetic....

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah, there's enough of a welcome mat for the little buggers as it is!

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

This is my first post for the "Cottage Gardening" forum, and I've really enjoyed reading your posts on naming your cottages. When we bought our cottage in northern Michigan 12 years ago, we couldn't come up with a name that we all liked, although my husband really lobbied for "Sugar Shack", named after the old 50's song. Today, our cottage's name is not creative at all, but it works for us. Each weekend our friends at church would say, "Are you guys going up north this weekend?" We'd say, "Yeah, we going up north." So that's how we got our cottage's name. Our sign simply says, "Up North".

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thankfully Sugar Shack didn't stick! That tune would run thru my head every time it was mentioned... (((shudder))) LOL
Up North is cool... pod

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Glenda, as a fellow Michigander ... I totally get the 'Up North'. We even have some pictures titled 'Up North'. Where is your cottage? Ours is near Alpena.

brigidlily, another name from a book ... 'Great Expectations'. That would especially be great for someone just buying their cottage.

I wish I had a picture of the sign that used to be in front of our cottage. My maiden name is Cook. My Dad took a very thick chain, welded it into a writing of the name 'Cook' and then painted it white. One of my brothers took it for his cottage (it's only right since it is their last name). So it used to be called, 'Cooks cottage' when people talked about it. But wouldn't it be great to find a name that would last through different owners?!

Toofewanimals,
Our cottage is between Kalkaska and Grayling, right in the middle of the big snow belt that runs through that area. It's not unusual for us to have 4 feet of snow in the yard in the middle of winter. It's what we call "Big Snow". One year, when our friends who we bought our cottage from was still there, the snow was up to the roof, and our friend, Clark, had to literally dig a tunnel to the door just to get inside the cottage. Some years, we've seen the snow so deep that when you're driving around the lake, you are driving in a white maze with 8-10 feet tall walls of snow on each side of the road. You could only see the cottages when you passed their drive way! It's a whole different world up there. Nothing like down state in Michigan.

brigidlily, I've only been to TX once, and I saw lots of dirt and tumbleweed (around the Austin area & near Lake LBJ). Would the name "Oasis" apply to your cottage? I don't know if any of these will help, but from what I can remember, here at some names that our family kicked around but ended up with "Up North"...

Mental Heath, Sanity Shack, Eden, Papa's Cottage, Northern Exposure, Sugar Shack, Camp Runamuck, Summer Camp, Paradise North, Lake View.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

What a fun thread to read. I don't know if my spanish is correct but I would name ours Casa de los cuatro el gatos--house of four cats! : )

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Cuatro Gatos. Sounds like a mariachi bar -- which may be the flavor you're looking for!

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I think I'm going to call mine "To Carolina".

:)

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

So when you're at work, you can be gone to Carolina in your mind? ;)

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

>Ouch!!! < ...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

I've been keeping up but not commenting. My mind went sort of blank. But I did make a list of the ones for my place. There were 2 that were really good:Stone's Throw and Fieldstone Gardens. I just changed another one a bit to Stacked Stone Garden. To bad our last name is so long! Now to talk to DH and see what he thinks!

Maybe the brain will kick back in and I can do some creative thinking again! LOL

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

Brigid and Pagan, exactly. :)

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

Sheesh, if it doesn't calm down some around here, I'm going to name this place Windy Hill....

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Probably in another week I'm going to be forced to name it the Heating Pad. Gone are the mornings I stepped onto the back porch and breathed crisp air. It was like stepping into a sauna yesterday. sigh... we're in for it.

(Sheryl) Gainesboro, TN(Zone 6b)

You an' me both, sistah.

You could just extend a Warm Welcome....

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ouch ! I thought Brigidlily was meaning needing a heating pad from laboring in the flowers... : ))

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I wish. It was tolerable this morning, but I think it's our equivalent of Indian summer up north -- we get Indian winter.

Waukegan, IL(Zone 5a)

Can I name my bungalow?

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Is it ever cute! What did you have in mind?

Something with bungalow in it?
