Okay, being on the thread about landscaping tombaak's playhouse, I remembered what I wanted to ask about. I love that British thing about naming a home, and I've been trying to think of a good name for mine. I think a cottage's name should be personal, but descriptive and intriguing. "Brigid's Puddle" might be a good name for mine, though it's just on the back burner. So, should we brainstorm and all name our Cottages? I know it's not the tradition here, but there's something so quaint and solid about it. Know what I mean?
Like the Weasleys living in "The Burrow."
cottage names
Good idea. I'll have to think about that one a while.
I like the idea too.My place is Green Gate Farm. I wanted to name it Blue Bucket because no one could find the drive or our house so I put a blue bucket on the post next to the drive. It was an easy way to tell people which drive, my husband didn't like that name so he put up a gate(to keep horses in) and painted it green. Now all the gates are painted to match so...Green Gate just made since.
Just for fun...we call our place "Meadow Muffin Farms" for obvious reasons...2 horses and 4 donkeys...
LOL - then I should call my place 'Apple heaven' - 4 horses, 4 + dogs and 4 cats.....
But really, if I were to name it I'd either call it The Old West Place / House or Windy hill. This is a very small town and when I describe my house to residents who ask where I live they always say "Oh, the old West place!" although the Wests haven't owned it for 20+ years. And it is very windy here.
This topic actually came up over on the Equine Forum - the gal who asked is Irish, so Gaelic names kept popping up, very neat, just awfully hard to figure out how they're pronounced!
Never been to the other forums but maybe I should. 3 horses - 2 goats -6 cats 1 dog 1chinchillia - 10 tank fish.
i am so confused....how does one get a name for ones home based on animals? we have 2 dogs 15 cats....are we nutts acres?
''Meadow Muffin'' and ''Road apples '' are both common names for horse droppings.
well....thats why i am CLUELESS...(besides several other reasons)...don't own horses...
Gus, we'd love to have you - things have been kind of strange on Equine lately (ya think, Wrightie?) - lots of foals, a few new folks, a few old and a lot of lurkers.
S'nS (I feel like I'm calling you "so-and-so") Heh - yeah, kinda picked that up from your dressage question. But it's impossible not to get much more information than you ever wanted with us around... anywho, in the same vein as the above names, you could be Hairball House, or 68-foot-farm...
too funny...hair ball house....hmmmm
Whatchu talkin bout, P-Cat? :~)
I just learned a new one - "meadow muffins." Sheesh.
Sticks ~ 2 dogs 15 cats? How 'bout Granja Pobre (the poor farm) ? LOL
Only 2 doggers and 5 cats here.... But what to name the home. I'll have to think on that one. pod
I'm drawing blanks on my place... two cats, one dog, one Englishman, no children, one horse in boarding school, and one up & coming garden.
No pets here. 2 boys (teenager and preschooler). I had 6 "big" rocks hauled in, along with several small ones last summer when I started working on the yard. Each rock weighs around 1000 lbs. When people ask directions, at the end, it's always, the house with the big rocks--you can't miss it. My yard is definitely unique; the house, not so much.
pod...i like that name...and since i live in west texas it is certainly fitting....; but i was hoping for a more cottagey feel to it...; i have all this white fence and trellis stuff and have 2 corgis with 15 'proper'NOT cats.....he he..
daltri 1000 pound rocks...amazing; i am not so good with naming stuff
Do teenagers count as animals?? I get to add 2
Sticks ~ if I hadn't seen photos of your "cottage" garden, I would say west Tx and cottage were a contradiction in terms. LOL NOT cats is a good thing! Same here...
A proper cottage name is a tough one to come up with... living in a remote, secluded, wooded area my cottage is easily missed ~ by my choice!
I use to raise rabbits and I called it "The Tin Shed Rabbitry" no more rabbits. But we are a cross between cottage and farm with the fields and large and small building. DH has never liked any names I came up with, No imagination!
2 cats and 1 dog no other animals. 3apple trees in front yard
Here's a picture that was easy to post of behind the house. I always wanted to name the place.
We bought the family cottage a couple years ago. I really like the idea of naming it.
Trust me, it's not a grand place, just a 750 sq. ft. place on a 50 x 200 ft lot, but it is lake front. :o) And it is not winterized.
toofew
Maybe naming places run in families ,My parents named their place Wendy Acres (after the death of my first horse) and the island, Littleshoes Island (after a dog).
ves522 your place looks like Stacked Stones or Stonestep??something, maybe Fieldstone Gardens.
Okay, along this line of reasoning I have to name mine the Litter Box and I'm just not going to do that.
ves, you could name yours Three Trees. pod, how about Hidden House?
I love this. You guys are coming up with some great ideas. Can't you see this all over America. All these cottage names.!!!!!!!!! LOL
ves love the picture....very pretty...and i loved the rabbitry name for your cottage

HAPPY BDAY TO YOUUUUUUU too feeeewwww!!!!
this is a great thread...ok guys ...lets give some photos of inspiration from our place so that people know what it looks like and then try names?
i loved the stone step name for garden gus....hmmm
brigid ...why would yours be named brigids puddle...?
i just thought of a cute name to describe my place today..(i am on crutches..) WALLOW HOLLOW....at least i can laugh at me self...he he
I haven't seen pictures of your places. I don't come into Cottage Gardens real often but plan on visiting more often since I think that is the kind of garden I have.
sticks that is going to be so pretty. I smiled also and that's what is is about.
You have to remember hardly anything is growing yet. Iris and tulips are popping up. I plan on going out and doing some cleanup in the sunshine today. There was snow on the ground yesterday.
This is another view of that back hill.
ves....the bones look great...we have to start with good bones and you did; did you have any strength left with carrying those big ole rocks
love photo 2....stoney hollow:)
Dh is a big help when it comes to the big stones. As long as I can roll them I can place them. These stones are all off our property. Out of the field and all the assorted rock piles. drive and walk thru brush to get to them. It's almost rock season as we call it.
This one I put in last year. Dug out all the ditch lilies and raised it.
ves yall have done alota work....some names that come to mind....stoney hollow...stones throw...stone hill stoney brook
