Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks for the abbreviations... I can't get things sometimes because English still my second language!!!

the funny thing is that I love to write... I love English and I do my best to write correctly, but with all these abbreviations it is getting harder...

Phoeb, welcome... you fit right in...

Babybird the only wildlife I can talk to you first hand (yeap, they share my bedroom with me!!!) are 5 eastern painted turtles... lol!!!! but all the people in this northest forum are wonderfully wild... really outdoor people!!!! lol... they are the best!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Welcome babybird!! What kind of wildlife are you talking about? I have coyotes, skunk, deer, moose, eagles, osprey, fox, squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits. Oh.....and lots of smaller woodland birds.

Haven't seen the moose in a while....he may have been the one that was hit this winter over on RT 3.....my blueberries may be safe this year!

I have an evil house cat that kind of plays the piano. That is about as wild as I get here in the city.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How funny! How talented!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

You haven't heard him "play". He is actually working on 3 Blind Mice right now. He has the first 3 notes down cold!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Better than I could do.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Natural that 3 Blind Mice would be his favorite!

Welcome babybird! We have a few PA folks with us here and lots of zone 5 folks. To the best of my memory, people from PA would have to choose from the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest or us. Geographically, I'd put you with us. But it's all about what suits your needs best. However, we are the most entertaining! ;)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I'll vouch for that! The Northeast Gardening forum is peopled with green-thumbed stand-up comedians :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Maybe we should start a thread about why we love our NE forum. For me, the top reason is we don't have screaming attacks on people.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Is it normal for gentle, sweet folk like gardeners to have screaming attacks on people? I am a newbie and I want to get this right LOL

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I copied the attack on me but I don't think it should be allowed at all, regardless of who the person is.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I was joking :-) I can't imagine a circumstance where someone would attack another person. You might disagree about some issue, but a point of conversation is that an issue exists because there are multiple points of view. Those volatile topics usually involve the basic values and beliefs that individuals hold, and people can get riled if they believe those values are being challenged.

But this is not the forum for those kind of discussions.

Here we are trying to create beauty (however it is defined by the individual) . . . and this strikes me as a worthy way to spend one's life - certainly not an issue to be attacked for.

different folks will have different strategies for accomplishing their gardens - and what works for one, may not work for another - but it still does not justify attacking another.

So I am really confused, as to why gardeners would ever consider attacking another person . . . . And I absolutely support Pirl, that attacking a person should not be allowed.

Besides, it intellectual laziness to attack a person, it is the idea held by the person that should be debated (gently, if at all, and with evidence to support the position - not just opinion).

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Seandor - I'll Dmail you a little later.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I think Pirl and I were involved in the same issue - boy was I amazed at the lack of humanity. It's one thing to be mad at someone over what they have done or not done, but to attack them on a daily basis is something completely unnecessary.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Anita. I still feel the sting from the attack.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Id take your back anytime Arlene.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

pirl, Anita - give me their address and seeds will be on the way to them - lots and lots of seeds including Star of Yelta, Bronze Fennel, maple tree, dandelion, chickweed, and the dreaded Cabbage Patch Kid seeds. Then I'm sending the evil cat to their house to eat their miniblinds and play the first three notes of Three Blind Mice over and over and over again! That ought to make them think twice - or at least keep them away from their computer while they are pulling weeds and driving to HD for more miniblinds or to CVS for ear plugs.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

LO!!! What an army we will have!!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pure joy, even if it's just to dream of the sight and sounds. Thanks, Yankee Cat and certainly a very big thank you to Anita.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow! I guess I missed that. Don't pick on our Pirl or the NE posse will be close behind.

Seandor, this website has people who feel that their pesticide, fertilizer (organic or not),compost rules, or the definition of an invasive plant are basic values. I have strong opinions but try to remember that this is gardening not religion.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Dave.

We probably all have our own opinions as to everything Dave said and I do have to say I'm endlessly amused by a neighbor, who insists her garden is organic, except (!) for the chemicals she's forced to use.

What's invasive/aggressive for one person may not be any bother for another but I love to read the opinions of others try and avoid grief. Even with compost, DH and I follow the advice of our gardening guru but what others decide to do is up to them. At our ages we want to reduce maintenance and have more time for relaxing and enjoying whatever we grow........but not that hideous (but lovely to look at) Celandine!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Right! and different approaches work under different conditions. Those with larger properties might not have to contend with the pests, etc, that one gets from the neighbours' yards, many of whom have much more important priorities than gardening (like raising and supporting young families).

So, while some of us might prefer to be totally organic, it might not be as possible as in some other circumstances. To each his own. :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

This year I'll be trying a new method for tomatoes so I'll report of my success or failure.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi, babybird. you can certainly chat with other folks here about wildlife that is native to your area. I have mostly birds, but I'm fascinated with them and trying attract more to my yard. that's one of my goals for this year. I'm putting up a bluebird house and purple martin condo, and more feeders.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Well put seandor in post #3389229. This forum is full of wonderful advice. You have to choose what is right for you and what is not. Not everyone has to garden the same as you. It makes it lot more fun that we have some stand up comedians in the Northeast. And if you can't understand what their saying just check with old phoeb cause I'm working on those acronyms LOL (laugh out loud - just showing off)!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Jeez Dave - you actually summed something up pretty good there. Although I really don't argue about anything here - there are those more driven to do so. I used to argue lawncare on GardenWeb, but more people wanted to seem smarter than you than to help other people.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Al, you've hit the nail on the head.....again!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

All very true and well put. Certain topics seem to bring out the militants, and gardening seems to be one of them. American Idol might be another. Would be nice if we could vote off the militants from DG. (Actually I have never watched the show and do not plan to, but it has become part of American culture, it seems).

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I haven't seen the show either, Victor, and don't intend to watch it. As long as we don't have the militants here on the NE Forum I'm delighted.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

No Green Panthers then?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Ouch! Sometimes, Al - you just go for the cheap laugh. That is one of the things I like about you.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like cheap laughs, cheap (but good) plants and, of course, cheap women.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Do the cheap women have to be as good as the cheap (but good) plants?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

if you see a good sale on women I could use some help around the house

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's so true, gram. We all need a good wife.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

So true.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Hey!! I AM a good wife....I just need a good maid! lol

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

......who can whip up a mean Baklava once a year?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Of course! I don't mind cooking, actually I love it unless it's summer time, then the garden calls! But the maid can do the dish's, laundry, ect.... while i'm outside. (big grin)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

If you find one, who has a twin, please share!
