Directions For Finding Your Way Aound Northeast Gardening

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

For those of you out there who have trouble finding your way around forums and threads this is the way it goes:

Northeast Gardening had a forum,
e-i-e-i-o!
And on that forum there were some threads,
e-i-e-i-o!
With a thread over here, and a thread over there,
Here a thread, there a thread,
Everybody's got a thread,
Northeast Gardening had a forum,
e-i-e-i-o!

(I used to be an elementary musice teacher before I retired)
I promise I'll do gardening stuff when the weather is better but I was so excited that I finally figured out how to start a thread. Don't laugh but I thought Pirl, Pixie, Victor, etc., were on just the one thread and then I found them on others. Then I realized the threads were to start a new subject - duh!!!!! My kids say the retired should have one of the letters changed and another one added. I think I've got it now!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

way to go, grammy! I think she's got it, by George, I think she's got it!

btw, welcome to Daves. I'm Jan (aka gram)

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

"I've got it!", our Grannyphoeb said,
"The secret to starting a thread.."
But then the spring broke
And like all green-thumbed folk
She rushed out to plant seeds instead.

I might still be lost.

Ya think?

Anyone ever see and listen to Farmer Brown I'm a cow? It is a Shock Wave Flash file, produced by Dollie Records. It is not X-Rated but comical.

I don't dare to put the link here as I could get tossed out? Mail me and I will give you the link and maybe someone can say yes the link can go here or no it is not allowed. You have to have a sense of humor on this one.

I gave one member the URL. I do have the T-shirts and the CD from this band. It is a cartoon and is not rated X maybe R? It is funny. The band is from Texas.

Help??
Have some questions about abbreviations and messaging. My kids helped me with LOL and that's what they did - laughed out loud at me cause I didn't know. They have no symthpathy for old people not in the know(LOL). I'm not sure what a DH is (I could make up a meaning but would rather not - again LOL cause he doesn't like gardening) and a DW. I've seen them both used many times. Are there any others I should know about as this is my first experience with messaging.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I think you might be SOL ;)

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

bigcityal - I checked out some websites for text messaging abbreviations to find out what SOL meant. Found out it could mean several things but hope you meant "smile out loud" - right?
I've got some for you or anyone else: IHA ------ ALOTBSOL ------ MTFBWU ------HAGD ------ IBK ------ EBKAC ------ ;)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

You got me on those. I only know the easy ones. It's more like S out of luck.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Don't feel bad :-> I got them off the internet. They had smiley faces also.

IHA - I Hate Acronyms
ALOTBSOL - always look on the bright side of life
MTFBWU - May the force be with you
HAGD - Have a Great Day
IBK - Idiot Behind Keyboard
EBKAC - error between keyboard and chair

Those last two are my favorites - kinda describes some of my days on the computer.
There were hundreds of acronyms and I can't even imagine trying to remember any of them. I think it takes more effort to remember them than it does to type the word but I'm willing to learn. I printed out the list and I'll keep it by the computer. (one list was 49 pages and decided to go with the shorter one) Still don't know what DH means. Wasn't on the lists I found.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

DH: Dear Husband
DW: Dear Wife

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Grammyphoeb, I love all those abbreviations, particularly IBK.
I also love SOL (smile out loud) but my DH, who was in the Navy, says this IS not what it means.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Cape Cod Gardener - I know, it has several meanings and that one we're not allowed to put on this website! But he did put a smiley face after it so I'll go with that one!! One meaning was "sooner or later". I could make up my own "smiling on-line"!! Thanks Dave for DH and DW . Dear is definitly a better name for my husband than what it could stand for . Maybe if I called him dear he would help me dig up all of those orange daylilies on the bank of the canal in our backyard. I have a new sign for me :-)))) rambling mouth. I am quiet in person, but I seem to be rambling on and on here. I guess I've turned into an IBK.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Grammyphoeb you have made my morning!!lol, sol,HAGD
signed, another IBK!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Dear Grammyphoeb,
LOL I had a great time reading your thread. Also, I am an English major {class of '75} and I take music lessons! So I loved your song. Music in the garden is great! My DH knows "grass and not grass" and then only in some cases because my son and I have put stone borders around the "not grass", but was recently elevated from the category of "Plant Challenged" when he helped me identify a plant over the phone at my flower show from online. He's a mechanical engineer and is familiar with computers. I tried to learn as much as I could once my kids went online. I refer many photo projects to my daughter who took classes in middle and high school. Welcome!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

My DH says SOL = s--- out of luck.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Personally, I can't stand those acronyms. Don't think I've ever used them. Email, and now texting, is killing the language. Writing was a challenge for most Americans. I can't imagine how young people will do in the real world.

And for mix-ups, how about having a grammy and a gram on the same thread! You two better come to some agreement. I will address as such - gram and grammy, if that's okay.

Victor

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Victor: That's ok, or I can go by phoeb. That's my nickname anyway. Whichever is fine - grammy or phoeb. I'm easy to please.

My oldest says SOL is s_ _ _ out of luck! :->

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I always felt noone should type LOL unless they actually did LOL.

Victor, I wonder if people don't write more now because of email. Interesting twist because the personal letter was pretty dead before the internet.

Stratford, CT(Zone 6b)

So that's what DH and DW means. Thanks. I kept trying to figure it out. Those seem to be big here, but not so much on other sites I visit.

I never could understand all the abbreviations.

I know IMHO means in my humble opinion, IIRC means if I recall correctly, STFU means Shut the F--- up but that's about it.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I didn't know the last one - it's right up my alley.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Al - - - - I have no words...except LOL. Dave, how can you prove that I didn't?

It took me a while before I caught on to some of the abbreviations. I tend to spell everything out anyway as my fingers are on a roll!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

With 5 kids..i've learned a few besides the one that have already been posted here are a couple more:

g2g = got to go
brb = be right back
bbl = be back later
gbbl = gone be back later
lmao = laugh my a** off
ttyl = talk to you later
rents = parents
gsb =going or gone snow boarding
sut = see you tomorrow
hand = have a nice day
luvu2 =Love you too
Thats I'll I can think of at the moment....not enough coffee yet!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

"nads" is my favorite but I enjoying reading it, not using it.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Lots of this is Chat-speak. Developed by and for all the non typists trying to carry on a conversation in a chat room with a minimal amount of typing. Back in the 60's I took typing 1 in high school {before Mavis Beacon and mario teaches typing!} and was the despair of the teacher, Mrs. Constanza, as I never broke 30 wpm {< see! acronym!} which was unusable in the business world. They wanted 70-80 wpm at least, I was assured! What ever skill I had got me through college on an electric, non-correctable typewriter where you had to space in and type your own footnotes {I will never go back!!!!}. Then, in 1994, I entered my first chat room and lo and behold, 30 wpm was king! I can type without looking and this is fast enough to talk in a room easily. With acronyms I am probably a little faster than that. Dear Mrs. Constanza, Thank you for your efforts on my behalf! You really did teach me something useful!

Dave, that is correct. It's ironic. I made that same observation a few years back to my CT book dealer friend, who happens also to have been my HS English teacher. Yes, people are now writing more, but all in shorthand. Judging from the scores on the new writing part of the SAT, there is a long way to go. And like I said, this is not a new problem. I worked with many PhD's whose writing was embarrassing. A 'C+' average 10th grade level at best.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

My writing I blame solely on my heritage....french speaking people talk backwards. Thats my story and i'm with it sticking!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

pirl - do you want to explain "nads". I check online when I don't know something and I came up with some interesting answers. One was national association of diaper service - that one I should belong to. It's your turn to come clean now!! I have to look on list now for an interesting sign that will fit in here :@ (means excalmation "what???")

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Begin the word with "go" and you have the answer.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Huh? Still not getting it? Remember why this thread started? I couldn't find my around Dave's Garden and understand what people were saying. I'm confused %-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Check for Dmail.

An important one for parents to know:
pos parent over shoulder. It's a warning to not send anything incriminating at this time.

Victor, My daughter (14) loves to write. It is her favorite hobby. The web gives her a chance to post her stories and other aspiring writers give feedback. Isn't that great? Of course we pre-approved the site and she knows not to give identifying info. But it's a great use of the technology.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

The lowest grade I ever got in school (D) was in typing in Junior High School. My two life goals back then were to never be 1) a secretary and 2) a phone operator. Hey - those still are my life goals. Ah! The sweet smell of success - priceless!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dave - I thought that one was pirate - parrot on shoulder

D! I got an F in phys ed the same year I was all conference in cross country.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Al, L almost OL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dave, that is great. The web is great for many things, not so for others. Of course, it comes down to personal responsibility, as usual. And good parenting.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I also failed to break 30 wpm while typing in high school - but keyboarding first my master's thesis, then the disseration greatly improved my typing! I haven't clocked myself - but it definitely is much faster than I could ever possibly write - and I have spell check!

Thanks for the abbreviations.

Wilkes Barre, PA(Zone 6a)

I have been looking for a forum that is alot about my area. Could it be that I have found it?? It would be great to talk to people experiencing the same types of wildlife and such that I see. If not, is there one and can anyone direct me? Thanks.
